Teams & Riders Jonas Vingegaard thread: Love in Iberia

Yes. Love him or hate him, Froome really contributed to spreading the Vuelta's appeal because of his TdF-Vuelta double attempts.
I don't know about that. I believe Contador was more responsible for that. The Vuelta grew a lot because they had a golden generation of riders who were spanish. Contador, Sanchez, Purito, Valverde but specially Contador who was by far the main attraction in cycling.

Maybe but I think Vuelta gained more prestige over the last 10-15 years because top riders participate more often.
Also just more broadcasting and social media engagement, and a generally much more international field. Even Del Toro vs Yates vs Carapaz is much better international exposure than the Giro's of old that were an pseudo Italian championship where Honchar got a special invite.

I think he rode a bad time trial to toy with Pogi. It's the only explanation that makes sense...

I never believed in him riding the Vuelta and I don't find it any more likely at the moment.
Why would he not race the Vuelta?

He wanted to in 2022, he did in 2023, and he was scheduled for a double last year before the Itzulia crash.

Vingegaard, contrary to public belief, does not hate racing.

Yes, there was a time (like 20 years ago) when Giro and Vuelta were Italy and Spain championships respectively. Very much in the Tour shadow. High quality international riders participating made them more prestigious surely.

If he loses the Tour, then I think he will want to spend more time with the family. That doesn't necessarily exclude doing the Vuelta, but if his archnemesis really is riding it, then I doubt he will go with less than optimal prep.

i think lot of the excitement was caused because of Contador and perhaps other players like Quintana in is prime, and Rodriguez and Valverde in a period the spanish cyclist were at the front of the sport.

I'd say it's more than just the cast as well. Those Vuelta muritos and rampas inhumanas really became a fixture on the yearly cycling calendar that people look forward to.

I was expecting him lo lose 45 - 30 sec to Pogi on this course, so not a huge drama. A bad day - for sure, but not a disaster. The fact Matteo had a bad day too suggests there was something wrong somewhere within the team. Maybe nutrition, maybe something else. The mountain TT suits him much better so we'll have to see how he goes there. Usually, I would expect him to win a TT like this or to be a close second at worst.

I don't think Jorgenson had a bad day. Almeida was in the vicinity and he's a decent gauge on a flat ITT (in-form rider, good time trialist, not a specialist on a flat profile).

And Affini did a good time, so equipment wasn't an issue.

Yes and no, that is IMHO nobody likely was prepared for such outcome, not even as plan C.
