Not sure if Alaphilippe ever going to ride Tour of Flanders, below is a photo of Asgreen leading Alaphilippe up the legendary Muur-Kapelmuur during stage 1 of TdF2019

Well, when Gilbert was 27 he was also not really known as a cobble rider. He then started to get a few podiums at the Ronde and finally won the race when he was 34. Also started Roubaix only 3 times in his career and yet pulled off a victory. Once with 25 and then the last 2 seasons. So who knows what Alaphilippe might do in 5 or 10 years.

Look at Kwiatkowski - The rider whose talents are wasted like no other in the peleton.

I know he sets some own targets and he has won some big races... but there could have been so much more though if not always having to ride as a domestique in the GTs and other races.

He had won two Het Volk by that time. ;)

And Tom Boonen won the Tour of Qatar 4 times, does that make him a stage racer?!

This dude is a one trick pony...that one trick is winning! Good ride today, I love attacking for the win!

Re: Julian Alaphilippe

That was an insane effort. You hardly ever see someone pulling off solos like that in the tour de france.

What I noticed is that when Alaphilippe attacked I think for a second Bernal wanted to follow him until he realized it was just completely impossible. Ala was simply on another level today.

Very boring rider to watch. Starting, attacking and winning over and over again

Epic ride, he'll defo hold it now until the Planche des les Belles Filles at least you'd think!

And then they barely showed him and next thing you know he has 50s.

I have a rough idea what was up there

Big number today. I didn't think he could make it...and he did. Chapeau!

Good thing about Ala is that he is not just an uphill sprinter. He has showed several times in the last couple of years that he likes to go from far out. He is also technically gifted and is somewhat of a daredevil downhill.

I don't think he has to wait for De Ronde when he is this good right now. He has the skill set required to win it

This is controversial, but I actually think that the Flemish bergs suit him better than the Liege climbs.

With Gilbert gone, there is a empty spot for him to try Omloop, E3, Dwars and Ronde.

I’m going to guess there was an element of Sky-bot tactics there. I remember after Dunbar’s first race with the team he had an interview where he said he saw a break to, and immediately jumped across to cover it. The break ended up going a long way with him sitting on and the rest of the team chasing behind. After the stage he was told “that was great work covering that break. But that’s not how we do it here...” He was expected to sit in the bunch with the squad and just help the chase as they ramp up the watts enough to reel the attackers in.

I watched a bit of the finale again. Ala already had 15" at the top of the climb on the peloton. When they crest the top, the pace drops hard (what a surprise, Nairito is the one at the front), gifting probably like another 10", if not more. Add another chunk after Ala's nutjob descent and there you go.

Re: Julian Alaphilippe

with such beautiful win, I bet his market value just went up quite high :)

Is he really leaving DQS?

No it was announced a while ago he resigned. Otherwise he would be looking at a contract to rival anyone

Can he even ride for GC? Probably his best ever climbing performance on a long climb, and the stage was decently hard as well.

No, Enric Mas is the GC rider for DQT.

Rally hope Julian will win the Tour alá Voeckler, he just needs a great breakaway like Tommy in the Massif Central. One of the very, very few with panache left in the peloton.

Great ride!

Can I restate how much I dislike time bonuses?! Let the road and the legs decide the time. Great have some sprint fun, but fake time has no place in the overall time.
