Not sure if Alaphilippe ever going to ride Tour of Flanders, below is a photo of Asgreen leading Alaphilippe up the legendary Muur-Kapelmuur during stage 1 of TdF2019

Well, when Gilbert was 27 he was also not really known as a cobble rider. He then started to get a few podiums at the Ronde and finally won the race when he was 34. Also started Roubaix only 3 times in his career and yet pulled off a victory. Once with 25 and then the last 2 seasons. So who knows what Alaphilippe might do in 5 or 10 years.

Re: Julian Alaphilippe

That was an insane effort. You hardly ever see someone pulling off solos like that in the tour de france.

What I noticed is that when Alaphilippe attacked I think for a second Bernal wanted to follow him until he realized it was just completely impossible. Ala was simply on another level today.

Epic ride, he'll defo hold it now until the Planche des les Belles Filles at least you'd think!

And then they barely showed him and next thing you know he has 50s.

I have a rough idea what was up there

Good thing about Ala is that he is not just an uphill sprinter. He has showed several times in the last couple of years that he likes to go from far out. He is also technically gifted and is somewhat of a daredevil downhill.

I don't think he has to wait for De Ronde when he is this good right now. He has the skill set required to win it

I’m going to guess there was an element of Sky-bot tactics there. I remember after Dunbar’s first race with the team he had an interview where he said he saw a break to, and immediately jumped across to cover it. The break ended up going a long way with him sitting on and the rest of the team chasing behind. After the stage he was told “that was great work covering that break. But that’s not how we do it here...” He was expected to sit in the bunch with the squad and just help the chase as they ramp up the watts enough to reel the attackers in.

I watched a bit of the finale again. Ala already had 15" at the top of the climb on the peloton. When they crest the top, the pace drops hard (what a surprise, Nairito is the one at the front), gifting probably like another 10", if not more. Add another chunk after Ala's nutjob descent and there you go.
