Sorry as you know B.C.the bible better than I carry on Greg LeMond. Do not think but live your dreams. I will buy you a book of Bushisms and Pallisms and you can use them in your next deposition. As well as a copy of the Old Testament.

Good of you to mention Bush and Palin, two more hypocrites to keep your hypocrisy company.

You don't want to argue with me - I've read the bible just so I can argue with Christians.

If you're going to bash LeMond then stop being a pu$$y and come out and say whatever you have to say. Quit hiding behind "bad things your friends said about Greg" like a prissy little girl.

No he didn't. Trek and Lemond settled the case. People settle cases every day for all kinds of reasons. Liability may have been uncertain but Trek looked at the potential risks of going to trial vs. the certain costs of continuing the litigation. Trek was a defendant and had no upside-- even if they took the case to trial, the best they'd ever do is a verdict of no liability, but they had no possible recovery. So they probably looked at it as a pure business proposition, i.e., how much would they spend continuing with the litigation, vs. how little did they have to pay to essentially buy an insurance policy that they would never be litigating Lemond's claims and would put an end to the suit. This is an analysis that litigants in civil suits undertake all the time, and it's also why, even though liability is disputed, defendants in civil suits opt to settle out more often than they elect to go to trial. The costs of modern civil litigation are just overwhelming, and the cost to a company not only in legal fees, but also in the numbers of people who are kept away from their real tasks at work having to attend depositions, look for documents, answer voluminous interrogatories, attend pre-trial hearings and motions, attend trial, etc., can be daunting and in some cases cripple a company. Trek is big in terms of bicycle manufacturers, but I'm willing to bet that their management structure isn't like looking at GM or any Fortune 100 company, and they were looking at years of continued expense and time consumption with zero upside for the company. The figure that I've heard is that they agreed to pay $300K to a charity of Lemond's choosing (at least that's what I recall). While that may be a moral victory for Lemond, it's not a "win" and it also isn't a loss for Trek (actually it was a pretty smart PR move, so the donation is deductible, makes them look like good citizens, etc.).

I don't think anyone "won". Most civil business disputes don't go to trial, and most don't result in "wins" or "losses"...just a lot of money spent on legal fees with entirely uncertain outcomes. Settling is just a way to regain at least a small amount of certainty to end the process. Just MHO.

Good to see an intelligent post. Quite rare on here.

Yada yada.

Seems to me quite likely that everyone subject of or involved in the discussion is a jerk - LeMond, Blutto, Blutto's buddy, ChrisE, Buckwheat, others, and now me.

What does jerkdom have to do with anything? Is trying to determine who is the biggest jerk a meaningful use of time?

-dB

Of course it is. If you are a jerk it screws up the accoustics in the echo chamber..

I don't think it does any good if you drink it. Plus, I don't think it was around until the late 80's. Regards.

It was mentioned that at the race in question, LeMond was 17. That would make it 1978.

LeMond, as we all know by now, was availed special access to a digestible, fast acting form of EPO that was in clinical trials at the time. Plop, plop, fizz, fizz, and off you go. This would explain LeMond's amazing performances from the time he was a 15 year old junior.

Also LeMond had the foresight to ahhh, shall we say, dispose of any potential witnesses to his nefarious deeds. Lance only sought to bring these witnesses out of internment from the Gulags. That is why he needed to pay huge sums of money. To secure the release of these witnesses.

Mr. Wheat, this all sounds good and everything and I am inclined to believe you. But, could you please post a link to back up your assertions? Thanks.

The reality of it is I raced against Greg.and he handed my blank to me on a platter. I knew how good we were in Nor-Cal and I knew Greg was Tour bound. No surprises for me there. I dropped out of cycling and only started riding again in 2005.

However after reading this blog I started asking friends about Greg. Not Wikipedia, not his training books, strictly people who know or have known him.
I just do not like what I hear about him. I do not want to slam him. I feel pity for Greg, he has put his life out there for all the bloggers and in velo-news, cycling news pro- cycling etc. I want the best for Greg, and peace for him and his family. I also would like for him to begin to think.

Secretly, he's a horrible person, but you're very concerned for him and his family. Now I understand!

So in one race Greg treated you and other riders like trash (when he was 17 years old)? Really, what are you talking about?

I think he is saying that GL may not be the pedestal denizen the forum makes him out to be, and offers up an example.

Don't worry. That bubble has a pretty thick membrane.

Physician, heal thyself.

Or, if I wanted to bring down the biblical brimstone on your a$$, how about some of this:

"how canst thou say to thy brother, Brother, let me cast out the mote that is in thine eye, when thou thyself beholdest not the beam that is in thine own eye? Thou hypocrite, cast out first the beam out of thine own eye, and then shalt thou see clearly to cast out the mote that is in thy brother's eye."

Huh?

What do I choose in babelfish to wash this crap to English?

Yep I'm sure all 99 guys in that race that got beat by a young athletic mutant were just crying their eyes out with shame and indignation. Or maybe it was just you and you're still whining about it 30 years later.

.....no they weren't crying...but they were ****ed ...the long ride home in the team van produced many a "choice" comment...as I said before, most everyone came to that race as huge fans, and they certainly didn't leave that way...

I can't say that I know him well but he came with his son to one of our local training races. I had a chance to talk to him for a bit and he seeemed like a typical nice guy.

Flicker are you not the guy who said he was told by someone that knows Lemond doped? A former pro cyclist?

Doped As amatuer. After he left the states I quit watching cycling. I read about his tour victories in Sports illustrated. I was very happy for him.

Not a horrible person Greg. I do think he is unhappy and inflicts that on Continental Pro cccycling. His main adverseries are Lance/Trek Contador Floyd.

The van conversation:

Rider1: "So what was Lemond's deal riding off the front on the first lap?"

Rider2: "I know, right? Like the kid doesn't have enough wins this season, he's gotta push the pace right from the gun?"

Rider3: "Dude, did you see him when he lapped us the third time? I swear he was pointing at his junior restricted gears and laughing at us."

Rider1: "The guy's a tool. I'm hungry. Put on some REO Speedwagon."

Rider2: "I used to be a big fan. I'm rooting for Jockstrap Boyer from now on. He'll win the Worlds or Tour before Greg does."

Blutto: "Hey Frank, could you come over here and help me apply this chamois cream please?"
