Result + Report - Tour de Bintan Indonesia 15-17 Oct.

Singaporeans Adi Puttera and Serene Lee win S$10,000 Prize Purse of the inaugural Tour de Bintan.

Bintan, Sunday, October 17, 2010 — The wet weather halfway through the race did not stop Adi Puttera Bin Yusoff and Serene Lee in holding on to their day-one lead to finish first at the inaugural Tour de Bintan.
Following his first position finish in stage one yesterday, Adi of OCBC Bank Singapore Cycling team finished 7th in the second stage (74km) with a time of 1hrs 57mins 02secs, conserving his energy for the last stage. He concluded the day by sprinting to the finish line to win Stage 3 (38km} and emerge as the overall winner of the Tour De Bintan.

Talking about his win, Adi said: “I’m delighted, especially to win the overall Yellow Jersey and winning both stage 1 and 3. I’d like to thank my teammates for helping me to victory. The Tour de Bintan was well organised, and I will definitely be back next year!”

Serene Lee also put up a stellar performance today, taking home the King of the Mountain title for the second time. She pulled the peloton for almost the whole stage, taking the opportunity in stage 2 to test out team tactics before racing the last stretch in stage 3 to finish first overall with a time of 1hrs 8mins 3sec.

“I’m very pleased to win the overall title! After the heat yesterday, I welcomed the rain and cooler weather. There was less cramping and allowed me to generally enjoy my time at the Tour de Bintan,” said Serene.

Up to 500 participants signed up for the race, of whom 150 were Singaporeans.

The Tour de Bintan, with challenging routes over three gruelling stages, covers a total distance of 268km over two days. The tour format gives amateur cyclists a chance to select their race category based on cycling skills and experience rather than age group.

Txurruka gets his first pro win

According to CN the Taiwan Cup was cancelled due to typhoon Megi

http://www.cyclingnews.com/news/taiwan-cup-cancelled-due-to-typhoon-megi

However, it seems that the race was not cancelled but just changed its course. Fundacion Euskadi has in their web page the good news: Txurruka won a sprint in a group of three after climbing a 52 km long mountain pass with 3000 m elevation gain.

Amets actually won something....???

His appeal is now totally ruined. :(

Are you kidding? Have you seen his plan for next year? It involves building up to País Vasco, then chilling out a bit, building up to the Tour and the Vuelta. His aims are to get stages by getting in as many breaks as possible, and if possible getting stuck in a hopeless chasse-patate too.

I know he'll still attack... That's not the point. The point is that he appealed (to me at least) because he was the little engine that, just, couldn't. He would work twice as hard as almost any other rider, but just could never get that victory. He was practically a cursed man. Like this year in Basque Country, he had the mountains jersey sewn up, after working his behind off the entire week... Noone could take it from him anymore. Except Amets desperately desired a meet 'n greet with the Basque tarmax that denied him.

Amets used to be the bulls-eye for the Cycling Gods. They were always dangling a win in front of him, only to snatch it away. And yet Amets always rode harder and more aggressively, but still never won. Now that he's actually won something he's destroyed the narrative I'd built up for him in my mind. And that he chooses to finally win something at the most irrelevant and insignificant race of the year. If he was going to finally win something it should've been a Tour or a Vuelta stage like his travails deserve... Not the friggin Taiwan Cup!

Considering how extremely difficult this Taiwan Cup is said to have been, this is quite poetic. Despite all his trials and tribulations, he stands up, brushes adversity towards one side, and goes and wins in a freaking Typhoon up a mountain pass the height of Flanders, for the most insignificant race imaginable. This race will be off most peoples radar, but it will be the starting point for big things from Amets.

Reportedly 55k of non stop climbing to 3700m. It was just a chillout parcours according to the organizers.

But hey, this race doesn't really count. He surely once won a criterium somewhere in the Basque Country as well.
