In the stage two days ago (the one won by Greipel) he said something along the lines that Cavendish was nowhere to be seen or that he'd dropped out or something similar.

Cavendish was in fact sitting nicely in 2nd (and had been for some time) and came out to sprint a split second after Phil stopped talking. This prompted Phil to raise the volume and pitch of his voice as though Cavendish was coming from nowhere.

I long for the day when Matt Keenan is commentating the end of Tour stages.

To be fair to old Phil, do you think you could talk for 4 hours straight, giving custom commentary to more than one network during the same broadcast (if you listen carefully you can often hear him talking in the background while sherwen is speaking), all the while trying to make a lifeless flat stage remotely interesting, without saying something stupid at least a couple of times a day? I don't think I could.

No harm in being amused by the quotes, but using them as examples of "why he has to go" are misguided IMO.

Well that's his job, other people seem to be able to do it far more capably.

Why not? That's exactly what they are "examples" not an actually listing of all the stuff ups, otherwise this thread would rival one of the LA threads in the clinic. What do you think a bleedin' "example" is?

Your first comment is correct. He is "old Phil" and he's lost it. There's better exponents of the art.

Bless Phil.

I don't care that he is old, and that he makes mistakes. I think part of the fun now is me watching the race, and with a bit of knowledge of the sport, knowing when he makes mistakes. It doesn't matter; I am not misled.

Don't forget he is having to identify riders very quickly and not always seeing their numbers. Not the easiest of jobs, especially when they all wear helmets and often glasses too.

That said, I could do without Paul Sherwen's trying to be Minister of Tourism for France and telling me useless facts about all the chateaux and cathedrals the race passes

The other day Phil or Paul stated that Luis Leon Sanchez was one of the best descenders in the world. 15 minutes later when Voeckler attacked on the downhill they said LLS struggled on the downhills.

Luis Leon can do a good descend though. That stage he won in Paris-Nice 2009 was because he pressured Contador in the descend and then Contador totally bonked in the chase. One of the best stages ever despite the result :p

You don't know bad commentary until you here Phil Gould during the State of Origin. Or the whole commentary team of Aussie commentators on Fox Sports for the Super Rugby. Thoroughly terrible. The most one-eyed obnoxious braindead group of morons going.

When Lars Boom attacked off the front on stage 11 with 5km to go:

"He can do it. He's the time trial champion of Holland. He's also terrific against the watch".

From memory the duch TT was 45km and he didnt have a bunch of teams
working up for the sprint right on his wheel.
he also didnt have 160 km in his legs before he started the TT champs.
So we take the quotes made by Phil with a pinch of salt

He did make a tremendouse efort to get his Mug on TV also some exposure for his team. He wasnt going anywhere.
try anything if it works OK it didnt do any harm.

Paul Sherwin about Sylvan Chavanel - "hes never had a good Tour de France" (though admittedly Phil did then chime in and say 'oh except for last year when he won a couple of stages and wore the yellow jersey for a number of days)

The thing about the Tourmalet, it keeps on climbing right to the line and then descends immediately.

thats a fair quote though..

there are a number of summits that end and then go onto a flat, or even go up a bit more at a lesser extent before they go down..

the tourmalet is one of the few climbs that the top, is actually the top
