"a rare steak is a good breakfast for what lies ahead"

so says Rodger de Vlaeminck just before a 3th place at Paris-Roubaix.

A Sunday in Hell, 15:00 for pre-race meal

He's still alive and cycling BTW.

Good point Rip:30, if you are happy with just 3rd, and your criteria for a successful diet is merely being "still alive", then even meat can allow you to reach such lofty goals, but if you want to win the US TT champs for the 6th time, go vegan! :)

You shouldn't have mentioned the US TT champs.... up till then you had a good point.

3rd in the most important one day race in history (that he also won on multiple ocassions by the way) vs winning a TT championship (for any country, let alone the US). No contest. I'd even take 5th in P-R if the option was available!

Hopeful that's sarcasm. Hard to tell these days.

But for those that haven't seen the race, RDV put in a crushing performance that day, only to let overconfidence in the sprint get the best of him. Definitely watch the whole movie! It's truly awesome. Mullets, sideburns, rare steak, and a battle royal.

He is also the only 4x P-R winner ever. Also one of only three to win all 5 monuments.

vs DZ who has been vegan for like a year or two, which have been some of the weakest of his career.

Pointing out that a PR winner, after eating steak for breakfast for that race, only gets 3rd, is hardly supporting your cause. :)

Imagine if he had a vegan breakfast...

I gotta say about this thread . . . . it sure it good for some laughs. I found the latest photos of durian's girlfriend especially funny .... that look on her face is priceless ! ....like "Do I have to pose for you againnnn ? " .... Yeah ...keep up the good work at manipulating her :)

I'm really getting turned off to the whole vegan thing. I may not choose to eat meat these days . . . but I don't consider myself a vegan .... There's just wayyy too many with very constricted views on life and death. I mostly see them as afraid of their own mortality though . . . join the club. Don't use the animals to hide your pain though. ....

Don't worry, by only skipping meat you can be a "mere" vegetarian like me.

One day I hope to be a level 5 vegetarian - I don't eat anything that casts a shadow.

I'm done checking in on this thread. It seems to be one huge advert for the OP and his brand of "look at me" schtick. Enough with 'Ms Durian rider' fcol...yawn.
btw, I'm a vegetarian and have been for years, old enough to be that guys mother and still cranking pretty well on my road bike, but everyone out there who is fit and healthy doesn't seem to have the need to toot their durian as loud as this guy.
;)

+1 x 1000....:D

But hey, I thought you guys said 'you die with out eating animal flesh' yet I can out ride all of you's based on garmin connect watt data. I put up vegan pro athletes of all walks of life and you's say 'but but but..'.

Excuses, excuses.. lol!

Have the balls to put down your artery clogging 'food' and pick up some life adventure guys. Dont live a little, live a LOT!

#Its interesting to read the obvious self dialogue going on here. Here is more data linking plant foods with stamina and animal products with impotence.

Yes, you are right. Its particularly interesting the way that you keep putting words in other people's mouths. :D
remind me again - which members said the bit in red? Note that since you have pluralized it, you'll need to come up with several people saying that. (NOTE: inferring something doesn't make it so)

As to having adventure in your life - its not linked to diet and its pretty sad that you think it is. For instance, whilst you can say that you do okay in a few bike races, etc - I can say: that I have won some titles on the track, had some awesome races on the road in 2 countries, been rockclimbing for over 23 years, taught over 6,500 people to rockclimb, climbed high grades on multiple continents, taught Scuba diving, taught classical piano, taught guitar, camped at altitude in ice storms, slept on cliff faces, swum in open ocean races, kayaked long distance.... <inhale>... I'm a down hill skier, have been a cross country skier, enjoy good books and going to the cinema. Oh yeah, and I have two gorgeous children (whose photos I DON'T pimp out all over the internet) and.....

drumroll....

I'm a laid back omnivore! :D

(Note that I say omnivore here - unlike yourself I don't believe that the world is broken into the Veggies and the Meat eaters. The average person who has some meat in their diet does not walk around saying that eating fruit will kill you. They enjoy both items. In my case, I enjoy vegetables more than meat or fruit. I just happen to enjoy chocolate too)

In Soviet Russia, balls have YOU!

I hear you Martin.

Biggest reason people dont go vegan is they are scared that people will make fun of them. They are scared to stray from the herd that eat herding animals. They are scared and thats fine.

When mods change the title of my thread to make it sound condescending, I dont take it personally. I know they are scared of being made fun of for supporting the health conscious 'freaks'. ;)

I race A grade(caffeine free too) on a 9.6kg bike. Ive been a vegan for 10 years. Me and my gal, we pimp each other on TV, the net, in the paper (read the feature article in this Sundays Courier Mail) and give live talks all around the world (Melbourne was last night).

When I get personal emails of people thanking me for the information that allowed them to reverse their cancer, type 2 diabetes, obesity, depression, chronic fatigue etc...they yeah, it gives me a sense of contribution and I dont take things personally from the people that are still scared to follow their heart and step up to living a life of passion and heart felt intuition.

Be the change you want to see in the world. -Ghandi.

PS: You can get vegan chocolate too. Get adventurous and try it one day. ;)

WOW.

That needs to be quoted so we can all read it again.

Just by reading such presumptuous awesomeness my CLOGGED ARTERIES have opened up a bit. I may live to see 35 if I'm lucky.

My mom (who's a GP(doctor)) says being vegan is in fact unhealthy as do my books(I'm studying medecin as well :p) because of a lack of protein and vitamin B12 (yeah I know you don't agree with the proteïnpart Durian :p) and some other reasons I can't remember:p.
Being a vegetarian on the other hand is not unhealthy at all for a grown-up. It is for kids because they need certain substances found in meat for cerebral development. Maybe going vegan can be good for really fat people for a while but it is not healthy on the long term.

You 'hear me' and then you reinterpret my words to suit yourself - again.

FACT: I have never, ever once made fun of someone for being vegan (or vegetarian, or not liking pasta, whatever).

You need to understand that virtually none of the people who are discussing this topic with you are doing so because you are vegan. They do so because you make tele-evangelists and sellers of power balance bracelets look good.

LOLZ!!1! This cat went from boasting zealot with a persecution complex to full blown crackpot in a single paragraph. I am rather surprised that he did not go further than curing cancer, type 2 diabetes, depression, and chronic fatigue. What about male pattern baldness, hemorrhoids, and inadequate penis size? Surely veganism can help--dare I say cure-- these problems as well.

Personally I do not like to dilly dally with weak sauce like veganism. I do not take half measures. I go for the good stuff, the ancient healing power of gem stones.

Certain gems have wonderful healing powers. Each gem cures certain disease perfectly. They are:

* For prolonged vatha roga: One should wear Blue Sapphire until the disease is completely cured.
* For nervous disorder and inflammation due to vatha: One should wear emerald until it is completely cured.
* For hip and joint pain, foot and arm pain: One should wear Yellow Sapphire.
* For liver Disorder, Jaundice: Yellow Sapphire.
* For Drowsiness, Vomiting, Fever: One should wear Cat's Eye.
* For Asthma, Bronchitis, T.B, Cold, Cough, Breathing trouble: Wear Pearl.
* For Anemia, Weakness: Red Coral.
* For Heart Diseases: Ruby or Emerald or Diamond.
* For Kidney Disorder: Jade, Emerald or Rock Crystal.
* For stomach Disorder: Emerald.
* For skin diseases, Leprosy: Gomeda.
* For Migraine Headache: Star Sapphire or Jade.
* For Dental Problems: Red Coral, Lapis Lazuli.
* For Ear, Nose, Throat problems: Yellow Sapphire, White Coral.
* For Urinary Problems: Pearl, Diamond, Emerald, Red Coral, Yellow Sapphire, Topaz.
* For Blood Problems: Blue Sapphire, Emerald, Ruby.
* For Sound Sleep: Pearl, Moonstone, Yellow Topaz.
* For Blood Circulation, Heart & Digestion: Ruby, Garnet, Star Ruby.
* For Tissue Problems, Tension : Moonstone, Pearl.
* For Lungs & Nervous System: Emerald, Peridot, Malachite, Jade.
* For Curing Infectious Wounds: Blue Sapphire, Amethyst.
* For Controlling abortion: Red Coral, Malachite.
* For Constipation: Red Coral.

People make fun of my loony beliefs as well, but the big a5s ruby hanging around my neck brings in the chicas. It's all good.

Myth. If your a vegan you die from protein deficiency I heard!?

FACT: We dont even have a medical word for protein deficiency! lol! We have kwashiorkor and marasmus but these refer to overall caloric deficieny and are reversed when sufficient calories are consumed.

wwwveganbodybuildingbook.jpg

Myth: Vegans are crack pots and no doctor would promote it as healthy.

FACT: The LARGEST ever study done on human nutrition and health is called the China Study. Its conclusions? A Low fat, high carb, vegan lifestyle rich in fruits and veg best supports human health.

The following doctors promote a vegan lifestyle as 'optimum for human health and performance'. All of them can be googled.

Dr McDougall.
Dr Klaper
Dr Heidrich
Dr Barnard
Dr Ornish
Dr Gregor
Dr Graham
Dr Chittenden (father of modern biochemistry)
Dr Esselstyn (worlds leading cardiologist)

More can be found here: http://michaelbluejay.com/veg/doctors.html

Myth: ONLY vegans have b12 deficiencies. If you eat animal products you can NEVER have a problem with b12 EVER!

FACT: 39% of the US has borderline b12 levels. http://www.ars.usda.gov/is/pr/2000/000802.htm

B12 deficiencies are so common in society that literally your local blood lab tests hundreds of sample weekly. Its a good idea to do comprehensive b12 testing to ensure you are not deficient as eating animal products does NOT ensure b12 sufficiency in the human body.

Myth: 'Eating meat gives you strength and you become a weekling if you dont eat animals my butcher and overweight footy coach says..'

FACT: Some of the greatest athletes in history have been vegan. More and more current pro athletes are switching over to a vegan lifestyle to increase athletic performance naturally. Feel free to use the multiple examples Ive posted in this thread. ;)

If meat gave you strength, how on earth am I racing in Div1 and running so fast? How on earth have I cycled over 190 000km as a vegan all over the globe? How come I banging out 5.5 watts per kg for 10minutes? How come Ive never had a drivers license and literally can and have riden 515km solo in a day?

How come the strongest animals on the planet, they never eat meat or suck breasts of other animal species? How come?

Elephant
Giraffe
Gorilla
Oxen
Hippo
Rhino

How come nobody else has any wattage data to boast about? I mean me being a vegan for 10 years SURELY means Im protein deficient and on the edge of collapse? How can I race and train with some of the fittest cyclists on the planet and without even a cup of coffee since 99?

But yeah, Im a crackpot eh? ;)

Havin no meat dint hurt me none in tha head as a yung un.

You'll have quantify which aspect of being vegetarian effects brain development. There are quite a few million children raised on a vegetarian diet, I think if significant proportion of those were delayed it would have been well documented by now. I am happy to be corrected but I am at the very least an n=1 study that it has no such delay.

Hopefully in "medecin" you spell better when writing prescriptions.

Not wishing to attack you because you are essentially correct in your comments. Just wanted to point out though that using yourself as a sample size of 1 has an inherent flaw given that nobody knows how well developed you would have become had you been on a different diet in your youth.

You could have ended up with a higher IQ in later life with meat in your diet...

BUT!

significantly, there is equally no way to know whether avoiding meat in your diet saved you from ending up with a lower IQ than you now.

I think I pointed out earlier this week that if you want a straight fit line on a graph then you should only collect 2 data points. If however, you collect only one data point you can make the slope of that line look like anything you want to. Just like Durianrider does.
