The UV index is not an appropriate measure to use, it is just an estimate of incident UV radiation at ground level.
Dubai might just have more ozone above it.

The Heat Index or Heat Comfort Index is more relevant.

The average August max in Malaga is about 30 whereas Doha is about 35.

I live in a hot country and I've visited Doha and other gulf states but definitely not for pleasure. I consider them to be hell on earth. This is all about sports administrators with their venal snouts in the money trough and nothing else. There is absolutely no sporting reason for this.

I can't agree more. Where I live here in the north of Australia there's a good reason we only have Crits and track in the summer. Take Jack Bobridge's ride at this year's nationals - he was still feeling the effects at the TDU. Imagine how much 260kms will take out in similar conditions, especially when you're coming back from racing in Europe at 20 degrees maximum like the guys who raced Paris-Tours!

Australian officials will be disappointed as they though Scotson could win - Apparently Scotson would like to ride more on the road but is unable to get a WT or PCT contract - I have my doubts whether Scotson can transition to the road.

The Colombian cycling federation screwed up yet again. They named the team without consulting with the riders. Two riders (Chavez and Pantano) stated that they will not make the trip. Colombia has yet to find replacements and knowing how badly they handle travel visas, most likely will not have a full team for Gaviria. Gaviria has shown that he doesn't need a train to win but for the Worlds, you need all the riders you can.
On top of that, its such a pie on the face when your riders work hard to get a full team available, which many other countries could not do, but then embarrass yourself once again in the world stage. Colombia had a great 2016 (and an amazing last 4 years), but the local federation has destroyed domestic cycling. You cannot sustain colombian cycling with this current federation. Vuelta a Colombia and Clasico RCN are losing their luster, Tour de Cafe never took off, Colombia-Coldeportes was a catastrophe and let's not get started on the doping epidemic there. Ok, done venting. My point on this thread was to point out that Colombia will be all for Gaviria but will not field a full team.

Aren't Vuelta stages typically under 200K whereas the Worlds is scheduled for 260? You are talking, more or less, half again as much (or at least a third for any nitpickers) in distance.

So yeah, in southern Spain in August, the sun is stronger than for the Worlds this coming week. And earlier in the summer the sun is of course even stronger than in August.

Given that it will be a flat course, riders will always be cooled a bit by the wind, so the California stage isn't comparable. Afaik the only issue is acclimatization.

Nice find. Good to see some facts putting the risks into perspective. Looking at some of those figures, I think the focus for the sun brigade should really be on the Tour Down Under in January.

The timing of the TDU is predicated on its relationship to the Northern season. January is a often an awful time to ride in 'straya. The TDU seems to often dodge the very worst of it, though.

They both stated that they wanted to support Gaviria but that they had already scheduled downtime after long seasons, i.e. not in form at all at the time of the worlds. They also stated that no one from FCC had spoken to them about it and only found out via news and reporters that they were in the team. Supposedly, they contacted the federation to express not to count them immediately after finding out they were in the team.

2nd tier: Bouhanni, Gaviria, Kristoff, Boonen
3rd tier: Ewan, Groenewegen, Van Avermaet, Nizzolo, Degenkolb, Viviani, Demare, Nielsen, Boasson Hagen, and Bennett.

Everyone else has near 1% chance or less of winning on oddsmaking.

I expected more from Ganna, but apparently he had a bad day. 2 local girls from South Tyrol finished in the top 10 in the WJ ITT, that's pretty cool.
Italy has a scary team for the U23 RR: Albanese, Ballerini, Consonni, Ganna, Minali and Mareczko, that's a monster team. There aren't many guys on the startlist who could beat Kuba in a sprint, will Juan Sebastian Molano ride the U23 RR?

Yes, he's a great rider, but beating Mareczko 9 times out of 10 in a race that is totally flat? The biggest question mark is probably Mareczko's shape, he's been pretty bad since the Tour of Qinghai Lake.

Doesnt matter, he has no chance against Halvorsen in a sprint. Halvorsen beats some of the best sprinters in the world today as a 20 year old kid. Like Groenewegen ,Coquard, Hutarovitch and many more. This year he is on top of his game and a top favorite in a sprint in Doha.

Hmm, my guess is that Mareczko is faster on a completely flat course like this, if they're sprinting head to head. Halvorsen isn't a pure sprinter and would probably benefit from a harder race, though. There's also a big question mark as to how he will handle the heat.

I think Gaviria is the top favourite for the Worlds in Bergen in 2017.. THey say its a course for GVA and Sagan, that means Gavira as well. Those are my 3 top picks anyway! With hometown boy Kristoff as the nr 1 choice in a sprint ofc..
