As far as a weak field for the TT, I think I have not heard the first time in which this argument is not use for any of the important races. It sounds like an excuse. Besides have somebody remember a time when all (100%) potential contenders for any race are on top form fighting for the win? I don't remember.

Yep, it was a pretty strong field, especially considering it's really late in the year, conditions were atrocious, and we already had an Olympic TT this year. And who was missing? Cancellara and Wiggins, who are both pretty much retired and unlikely to be in any kind of shape, and Froome, a who is probably pretty flattened after the Tour and Vuelta and wasn't going to be in contention for the win either.

Jonathan Dibben 9th. The next Geraint Thomas? This season he's been a track World Champion, a top-10 (U23) at the road World Championships, 2nd in U23 Tour of Flanders, and won a time trial and the mountains jersey at Triptyque des Monts et Châteaux.

I'd also point out that although he has ridden the team pursuit like Wiggins, Thomas, Kennaugh and Cummings... he is the Points race World Champion. The medallists of the Points race in the last decade have included Simon Yates, Kiryienka, Keisse, Cam Meyer, Swift, and Riblon - it seems like the track discipline most given to producing climbers or puncheurs on the road.

Halvorsen easy win U23 :D
How can be winning by less than a wheel, overtaking the leader only in final meters, easy?

He was the favourite, had the best team and everything went as planned. Easy was ironic, but still.

good news of Jasper Philipsen in the Belang van Limburg :)

As soon as the body starts thrilling, you should stop right away.

I feel a whole lot better and the doctor is caring for everything. My eyes are still a bit red. If it were irresponsible to stat next Friday, I wouldn't do it. My health is above everthing.

About being back on his bike:

Just a little on the rollers under the airco. Riding on the outside wouldn't be wise for me. I just let the muscle warm up. Despite the circumstances, the legs were turning rather loosely again. In my opinion I'll be okay for next Friday. It'll be important not to make the same mistake as during the ITT in which I totaly blew myself up. And if it's a failure again I certainly won't take it so far again. As soon as the body starts thrilling, you should stop right away.

Carlo Bomans from the Belgian Fed had called Jasper's parents in order to reassure them before it was on the news. They appreciated it.

He won't ride.

And Enzo Wouters is the next Belgian that ended up in the hospital due to the heat.

So Germany with two sprinters in the top 4 but not winning. I fear something similar will happen on Sunday.

Pascal Ackermann had three strong men leading him out, but Phil Bauhaus was allowed to try on his own and in the end neither of the two won. Ackermann says he is happy he got his silver medal but he acknowledges that "maybe one man was missing".

Seems like pretty sour grapes from Ackermann.

He was probably asked and answered with the obvious.

Boonen is still incredibly confident there will be echelons and there will be atleast 6 of them. They only need winds a little more than 10km/h in the desert for echelons.

Interview is on cn.com.

Also interesting what he has to say about the weather. He says he has raced at least 100 times in conditions like these and probably around 25 times in worse conditions.

It's reassuring, I think. Guess he wanted to but was forbidden by the doc. Gonna get some news in my Belang.

Hope he's okay. Wonder if the ice-vest is really working. At least it was for Martin.

That Gerben Thijssen guy is a monster, his legs...

He's a trackie after all. 2nd in the Madison and third in the Point Race at the Euro track championship. Gerben is a phenom but had a lot of bad luck: Lyme disease, broken collarbone after a crash at the Trofeo Carlsberg in which he had won two stages . Doc advised him to take a rest for the whole summer but he disobeyed and that's how he got his medals.

Other anecdote, before his win at the kermess of Zutendael, he was stolen his 6 bikes and had to ask a bike to his future team Lotto DVT as a U23 and he won the race, his 6th of the season

So, Dumoulin thinks the races should have been held in the evening (or at least into the evening). Makes sense to me; not only would it probably be cooler then, it might also mean more spectators. It's possible the lack of spectators - at least in part - is due to the locals being smart enough to not go outside when the temperatures are at the hottest.

I doubt locals will come oout and watch this, racing in the evening is very logical indeed. Weird that its just the first time someone mentioned it.

First thing I thoughtwhen I heard the whining about heat....wit the technology, camelbacks filled with ice, should fix everybodyup, but night racing would have been cool, like this...https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JjJb_MYym3A or thishttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vzaozaCEbu0

I read in our local newspapers he doesn't really believe the echelons will stick. There might be echelons but apart from ~50riders, everything will come back together after the first lap on the circuit.

GVA might ride with a camelbag I read in a flemish newspaper, since taking bottles in the race will be very difficult...
Bad idea IMO, this will make him sweat more and overheat. Sure the convenience is good, but taking bottles from the team car is a much safer idea. Maybe for a 1 hour TT but not a 6 hour road race.

Belgian team is pretty worried about 200riders constantly fetching bottles because they'll have to drink ALOT. Roads in the desert are appearently not too wide and carrying bottles on the circuit might be even more difficult.
