I expect him to try something on Cipressa or immediately afterwards. Come Poggio, he can maybe join an attack, if it isn't too violent (but then it'd probably come to nothing.) If Viviani only has Gilbert and Alaphilippe with him in the last 3km, Gilbert will be crucial for Viviani's position for the sprint, I think.

Phil will never work for anybody, at least not during Monuments.

Phil wants to win and he will attack on Cipressa, Poggio or even take a Spartacus like flyer at the end so do not expect him to do any work for Viviani or anyone else.

Alaphilippe is a better puncheur and a better descender than Kwiatkowski. Look at Bergen championships. Ala has the ability to attack on poggio and win alone, Kwia can only do that on the wheel of others.

I can't really remember any superb descent by kwiat so I wouldn't have called him a great descender. From alaphilippe I can at least remember a few very impressive descents. But anyway I don't think either of them is such a particularly incredible or bad descender that it would make a big difference. Alaphilippe clearly has a better uphill acceleration though. We shouldn't forget that kwiat could only close the gap to sagan last year because alaphilippe bridged the gap with kwiat on his wheel

What, weren't we about 50 metres from the solo attack last year?

Had Sagan waited just a tiny bit with his attack, Ala and Kwiat wouldn't have caught him before the first bend on the descent, and then I don't think anyone would have seen him again.

They might not have, but Matthews might have unboxed himself and got across. Or Degenkolb might have made the bridge.

And even if he had got away alone, it would have changed the dynamic of the chase to have Sky and QS trying to catch him rather than sitting on looking for wheels.

There are no guarantees. I will say i agree with Cosmo Catalano that given the pack behind came in 5s back; he had more time to launch his sprint later if he wanted to, which would have given Kwiatkowski less time to come around him.

I think the last one to accomplish a solo win was Pozzato in 2006. It's not impossible, if the group gets disorganized someone like Sagan might be able to break away in the last kms and make it.

That, plus Sky and BMC not having sprinters with them mean Kwait and GVA will go on the attack, surely they do not like to sprint with pure sprinters.

I think they will all be looking at Sagan and wait for him to attack.
