The Hangover is constantly funny and endlessly innovative. Every vignette within the movie contains mountains of laughs. Almost every line is bursting with comedy.

In a time of overstuffed 140-minute comedies (looking at you, Mr. Apatow), this is a breath of refreshing air. I can't explain how much I enjoyed this movie, and how much I continue to enjoy it no matter how many times I've seen it. It's simply the funniest movie I've seen for years, possibly decades.

I'm not sure if I can choose an absolute favorite, but my current favorite is "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind". It's got great dialogue, fantastic imagery, and alternately makes me curl up in a fetal position and cry, or laugh out loud at the choices I've made in life. It's good for what ails ya, even when you're not ailing.

Wow, you've got to read the book, to understand what a piece of trash the film was. The heart of the story was ripped right out of the film. While the book is some incredibly powerful writing.

The Gods Must Be Crazy

Hilarious, and with a pertinent message in these times of excessive consumption and greed.

/edit: SPOILERT

I loved it when he actually finds the end of the world. I was expecting something very sad, but the way the ended it was brilliant.

Lawrence of Arabia (Lean)
The Bridge on the River Kwai (Lean)
Oliver Twist (Lean)

The 39 Steps (Hitchcock)
The Lodger (Hitchcock)
The Lady Vanishes (Hitchcock)
Young & Innocent (Hitchcock)
The Man Who Knew Too Much (Hitchcock - 1st version)

im curious as to who you Brits considor to be your countries greatest director.
Hitchcock clearly has a larger catalog of great movies, but David Lean directed two of the best of all-time in Lawrence of Arabia and expecially Dr. Zhivago plus several other classics.

Ken Loach .

Shawshank left perhaps a greater impression on me than any other film. I can see why it's at the top of the IMDB list.

Many masterpieces on this thread. I think perhaps one often has to look at films that were not only great, but changed cinema when thinking in these "best ever" terms. Films like Citizen Kane, 2001, Apocalypse Now, even Star Wars (though Empire was a better film).

In my opinion the 1970's were the best decade ever for quality filmmaking. Godfather, Sting, Deerhunter, Apocalypse Now, One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest, Taxi Driver, Network, Jaws, Star Wars, Rocky, Annie Hall, American Grafitti, Badlands, Chinatown, Unmarried Woman, Alien, Deliverance, Halloween, Last Picture Show, Outlaw Josie Wales, Nashville, MASH, Alice Doesn't Live here Anymore, Exorcist, Juggernaut, Days of Heaven, etc. etc. etc.

Graeme said last month he would be passing on the hour record attempt this year because the bike wasn't meeting his expectations for this ride, and life, family, age were getting in the way. He didn't seem to have any regrets from what I recall. Just that it was time to move on.

I was just going to simply post that

Withnail and I

is the funniest movie ever. After reading the other post there are some other great ones i kind of forgot about like Raising Arizona and many of the others.

On reflection, Withnail and I is still my favourite comedy.
