Netserk, The Whale is an excellent movie.
The Wrestler is good, for the points that you point out. There are many great movies and books about a struggle with dignity or class. The Wrestler is a cool look at a guy showing his still has it on some level.
The Whale has many cool layers about where we are right now, at one point in the film, certainly not a spoiler, he and many other characters deal with who is now, and who he used to be. Brutally people say things about his weight, past and present.

Another movie that I think is a crazy, brilliant example of a man dealing with dignity, self worth is Ben Kingsley ,House of Sand and Fog..guy is obsessed with ensuring that nobody thinks less of him..and it's impossible because he doesn't hold the wealth and status in the United States that he did before immigrating.
This guy has done everything.. his list of films is basically everything great from a washed up mobster in Sexy Beast..as Ghandi ..oh my..Schindlers List..I am a huge fan.. Catalogue of Brendan Frazer.. unless he makes a dozen great movies soon.. Probably not.
Whale is good,in my opinion Aronofsky has not made a classic yet..
Thank you for the recommendation. The Fountain is my favourite film (well, together with Groundhog Day), so for my own part, I can't quite agree with your last point.

An American Affair (2008) - Another drama about Marilyn Monroe, though I lasted only about 10 minutes I'm mentioning it because in this movie the actress didn't look like Marilyn at all. (Neither face nor body shape.) There have been dozens of Marilyns over the years but here it looked like they weren't even trying to cast someone who vaguely resembled Monroe, it was more like they hired the first available actress instead. It's rare (actually I've never done this before), but I had to switch the channel because I found the lack of resemblance so distracting I couldn't keep watching. So, yeah.

Gretchen Mol is a talent. She was a heavy in recent almost unwatchable American Gigolo..she is excellent.. currently in the new Perry Mason..she is excellent.
She played opposite the other Affleck in Manchester by the Sea..a good movie.. and in Boardwalk Empire I always liked her on screen..
and w current Blonde w Ana due Armas playing Monroe in a haunting way.. it's really hard to watch bad bio pic routed movies.. but if you want to see a movie were you feel like the actor is the person.. Bryan Cranston as LBJ in All the Way.
.and if you are one of those people..6 degrees of separation.. Ben Affleck dated Armas who played Monroe, and Cranston plays the President that takes over for Kennedy after his murder..
Hollywood.. talk about a small town..

I'm not familiar with Gretchen Mol at all, I just thought she looked more like Kate Moss than Marilyn Monroe.

I have read some scathing reviews of Netlix's Blonde (2022), so naturally I will have to watch it. :D I'll let you know how it goes.

Blonde (2022) - Very dark, very slow-moving, gimmicky camera work, M. Monroe's character in tears the majority of the movie, I'm not sure I got anything memorable out of Blonde. I certainly won't be rewatching it. It was an interesting, fictional take on Marylin Monroe's life though, I'll give it that.

I think it's weird that Marilyn Monroe kind of fits in the lexicon separate from the old school, studio contract, casting couch stereotypes that by most accounts were all part of the business.. sort of a right of passage part of the business.
Blonde definitely touches on the sexual exploitation aspects of her life and the Hollywood culture. I remember all the Sean Penn hits and misses.. But as Harvey Milk I think is good.. And Jack Nicholson as Jimmy Hoffa was watchable.
I personally feel like the press tour for movies often turns me off..for Blonde to hear Ana and Adrian Brody tell it, I should have been camping on the sidewalk at the theater as to not miss it.. And the part of her life that interested me most was being in love with Joe DiMaggio and Blonde dropped that ball..

Windfall w Jason Segel is a good movie.. talk about dark..

I liked Penn in Milk as well as Nicholson in Hoffa, I have not seen Windfall. (Yet)

Going back to Marilyn I have to correct a booboo I had made in an earlier post regarding An American Affair - after doing some reading I learned Gretchen Mol wasn't even supposed to represent Marilyn Monroe, apparently her character was loosely based on Mary Pinchot Meyer, another one of JFK's lovers. So, that's that. I still don't want to watch an American Affair though because I really don't wish to join a sweaty, horny, pubescent boy character on his journey into manhood. Few things turn me off so quickly!

Penn turned out to be a good director. He was very good in Mystic River but I generally find his directing more interesting than his acting these days. The Indian Runner, The Crossing Guard and The Pledge are all very good movies with some of Nicholson's better late career performances.

Everyone in Mystic River are bulletproof awesome.

Do yourself a favor see Johnny. This movie delivers in every way.. as a seamless compliment to a great movie, a great soundtrack, with a variety of songs that were not made specifically for the film, but as you watch you would not know it. A song in English in a Polish movie about a priest who keeps giving even after he dies..because I knew nothing, sat down a cup of coffee and started watching the movie and was blown away an unexpected gift.

Howl (2015) - Marvelously low budget horror flick with terrible special effects and costumes... okay I did fall asleep at one point, but I did wake up in time to see the "werewolf" being dressed like it just stepped out of Party City on Halloween. I howled, that alone was worth the watch.

Top Gun: Maverick (2022) - Part sweet nostalgia, part cringy nostalgia, part brand new technological toys for Tom Cruise to play with and to ultimately defeat - I loved it and was thoroughly entertained. (Well, maybe not the cheesy, overly sentimental score and the unnecessary romantic parts.) I especially liked the final big battle with the Tomahawks and the Gen-5ers or whatever, for once a long action sequence didn't bore me to tears!

The Night Agent a pretty good corrupt government/spy thriller series on Netflix (based on a book).
This is an ever more crowded space Rabbit Hole w Kiefer Sutherland secret agent stuff..Jack Ryan..Tom Cruise was still better than John Krasinski..The Old Man..Jeff Bridges is a secret agent of sorts.Reacher..the star of the show is distracting muscular and lots of set ups like Jason Statham films were he kicks the snot out multiple bad guys. And now Sky Stallone has a show, Tulsa were he plays a gangster w a love interest police woman, who at great personal risk helps Rocky because there is just something about him..
UK series titled Bodyguard is excellent..and he is always good.. Slow Horses lead by Gary Oldman is decent..
Gotta say in another weird twist on secret agent genre.. Ray Liotta..plays a inside the system bad guy in Hanna..skinny young cute girl with genetic engineered skill set and all kinds of good action sequences..

Extinction (2018) - The most annoying, screaming kids I've seen on a screen in a very long time, this dystopic sci-fi flick would have been better off without them. Their parents were also very dumb (or at least the silly dialogue made them sound that way), especially the father. A lot of things in this movie didn't end up making sense if you think about them too much... otherwise the concept and twist were very good. But the script and directing should have been left in more competent hands.

The Good Person
This movie is a home run for everyone involved.. Morgan Freeman is great.. Florence Pugh is literally out of this world.. unsure if the part was designed around her personal talent, wouldn't really make a difference. She plays piano and sings in the movie and it pierces your heart because of the characters and subject matter.
Zach Braff wrote and directed, did both to another level..

Level 16 (2018) - I think this is a terrific sci-fi thriller appropriately spooky and sterile and with a surprising twist ending, the only thing I have a beef with are the guards' outfits. The guards were supposed to be all dark and scary, instead their wardrobe looked like it came from a military surplus store and they inexplicably wore sunglasses at night and in the dark. (For those of us old enough to remember sunglasses at night really only worked for Corey Hart and should have been left back in the 80s.) But that aside I think Level 16 is definitely worth a looky.

Zone 414 (2021) - It gets pretty poor reviews, but I actually really enjoyed this sci-fi thriller. It's true there are similarities to Blade Runner, but that's precisely why I liked it. The atmosphere was sterile and futuristic, and the cast was just great. There were several creepy characters, but Travis Fimmel played his creepy character so convincingly it'll give me nightmares! :tearsofjoy:

The Snowman (2017) - The timeline was a bit confusing and the plot not very original, but the beautifully snowy Norwegian scenery more than made up for it in this crime drama. It was a bit sad to see Val Kilmer, I think he was already ill back then because it looked like he was struggling to speak. (He had had throat cancer and had several surgeries and chemo to get rid of it.) But the rest of the cast was all right. Again, the plot wasn't very original, but the atmosphere and scenery were just stunning.
