I've seen three films lately that I really liked. The first was True Grit...really great movie...better than the original and amazing following of the book. The second was The Town...just loved it...not sure why.

And lastly, and I know I'm behind the times, I watched Boondock Saints with my daughter. Really fun movie.

I don't watch movies too much..but my last three I have enjoyed!

If you don't mind a lot of bad language then a great companion piece to the Boondock Saints is Overnight. It is a documentry about the making of the Boondock Saints. The director was working as a bartender when he wrote the script. A bidding war erupted for the script. Harvey Weinstein of Mirimax promised to buy the bar and give it to him as part of the script deal. He not only got to direct the film but the agreement also included a record deal for his band. He allowed his friends to make the documentry, thinking they would be recording his rise to the top of Hollywood. What they got instead was him spiraling into an abyss of ego mania that would give Lance Armstrong a run for his money.

Took a while to find this thread ... but just watched "Warrior". UFC meets drama with Nick Nolte, Jennifer Morrison, Tom Hardy and Joel Edgerton.

For a movie that spent little time in the cinemas, it is one hell of a good flick. Rated highly on IMDb. Highly recommended if you like MMA, some good quality drama, and something decent to watch while you are on the trainer!

I guess I've been watching a lot of movies lately, mostly on streaming Netflix.

In the past three weeks I've seen, among others

Senna was fascinating and definitely worthwhile. It did leave out some vital details that can be found on a Discovery Channel segment about Senna's accident that can be found on YouTube.

(In fact, it wasn't Discovery Channel as stated above, it was National Geographic. The upshot, though, is that if you combine what's seen in Senna with what can be found elsewhere, it becomes apparent that sabotage is a strong possibility, which in turn may implicate Senna's nemesis Alain Prost.)

Farewell My Concubine was a touching, beautiful film, good as both a date movie and to see by yourself.

Ong Bak 2 was comic book city, and actually had some (unintentional) laugh-out-loud moments. Definitely not as good as the first Ong Bak outing; but the fight scene choreography here was intense and beautiful and redeemed the whole movie.

Jet Li's Fearless was an enjoyable, thoughtful story and period piece, with terrific fight scenes. You just can't beat the combination of thoughtful and great fighting. :D

Lust, Caution was another nice period piece, this time from director Ang Lee. Set in Hong Kong and Shanghai circa 1938-1942, the film features compelling acting on the part of the principles, Tony Leung Chiu-Wei and the mesmerizing Tang Wei (who was caused no end of trouble in mainland China because of this film's powerful, controversial sex scenes).

13 Assassins is a journey into Edo-era japan from director Takashi Mike. You might have seen a lot of samurai films, but you haven't seen one like this. Intense, with at least one scene I wish I could un-see. Definitely worthwhile. :D

Not to be outdone by BroDeal's favorite, Attack Girls Swim Team Versus the Undead, I recently saw Swamp Shark. Brilliant filmmaking. Skip those Aronofsky films or foreign crap. This is the flick to see. Grab a huge bowl of greazy popcorn, plop down on the couch and get ready for some fun! And it's now out on BluRay!

Oh, and it's got Wade Boggs in it! Yeah, that Wade Boggs.

Unstoppable was a great looking film, and fun. Denzel was good in it.

But if you're looking for a superior, more cerebral version, I strongly recommend Runaway Train. A superb film nominated for a few Oscars back in 1985, it's like a existential action movie. I know that sounds strange, but it's excellent. John Voigt is almost unrecognizable and does one of his best acting jobs. Watch clip here.

Finally something I would watch other than the Takeshi Miike movie above.

Movies I have watched recently:

Harry Brown -- Tedious version of Death Wish from an English point of view. Starring Michael Caine.

Alien Hunter -- Actually started out pretty good as a spacecraft is found in Antarctica then went down hill in the second half.

Rats, Night of Terror -- A 80's post apocalypse movie directed by the man credited with directing the worst zombie movie ever, Hell of the Living Dead. Bad. Really bad.

Don't Wake the Dead -- A german take on the blind dead series. Made by the king of german splatter movies who directed the Violent Sh!t series. Half the funding must have come from the band Gang Loco because not only do they perform in the middle of the film, not only do they have a bit part where they are killed by zombified Knight Templars, during the film's finale, for no reason at all, the movie periodically cuts to the band playing.

Silent Night, Zombie Night -- I had high hopes for this one. Alas it was like the Lifetime Network made a zombie movie. People talk talk talk about their relationships and the movie grinds to a halt. Too much romantic melodrama, not enough zombie killing.

Hard Eight -- Really good movie about a small time gambler finding a protege.

The Bank Job -- Jason Statham robs a bank. What more can you ask for?

Night Skies -- Alien abductions. Oh, no. I have seen worse.

Croupier -- Interesting film about a would be writer taking a job as a croupier.

Botched -- Starts as a low budged heist film, the robbers get stuck on the thirteenth floor with hostages, and things turn weird. Great if you have a twisted sense of humor and don't mind the occasional decapitation.

Queen of Outer Space -- Classic bad SF movie. Uses props from Forbidden Planet. Hilariously funny 1950's sexism as space jockeys find themselves stranded on Venus, which is run by women.

Dead Air -- Decent small budget zombie film. Similar to Pontypool.

Blood Suckers from Outer Space --1980's film that must have been made on a shoe string budget for the video rental market. The whole thing is played for laughs.

The Dark Side of the Moon -- Atmospheric but hilariously bad SF movie. While orbiting the far side of the moon, astronauts encounter the devil in a derelict space shuttle that was sucked into the Bermuda triangle decades earlier. Not every SF movie features people firing automatic weapons in a space shuttle that has a curiously large interior.

Doghouse -- A bunch of blokes venture out to a small English village only to find a virus (or something) has turned all the women into crazed cannibals. Pretty weak. Nowhere near as good as Lesbian Vampire Killers.

Some quality entertainment there.

I'm surprised nobody's put up a link to it yet. Scary. :D

That's a great looking clip. First time I've seen John Voight acting since Midnight Cowboy, I think. Man, he's impressive.

The only one I've seen is Croupier. I liked it.

As an aside, I recently picked up an Apple TV, and one of the coolest things is the ability to take a movie, anything, rip it, and convert it in iTunes to an Apple TV movie. From there I can watch it on my regular TV (instead of the computer). While it takes up disk drive space after a while, it's really handy and typical Apple easy/friendly to use.

I have four movies coming up to watch soon that are either at home from Netflix, borrowed or now on my Apple TV. Anyone have any thoughts?

Gosh you guys have interesting and eclectic taste in movies.
How do you find the time to watch so many and still post on here??

I am a die-hard Kurosawa fan...especially anything that Toshiro Mifune has done. I think I've seen almost every movie that Mifune has made...while in later years some of his work was in somewhat 'lesser' style of samurai flick he was a pretty amazing actor...check out some very early work. One of my faves is "The Hidden Fortress".
and of course Sanjuro and Yojimbo. There are a few obscure hidden gems like "Drunken Angel" and "Stray Dog". :p

Over the holiday my whole family of four went to see "Tin Tin". I quite liked it...visually perfect and the characters were just excellent.

I like a lot of the old school japanese films. I am a big Shintaro Katsu fan. Aside from the Blind Swordsman series, the Razor series is too funny.

I also really like Takeshi Kitano's films.

In fact right now Japan has the some of the most inventive cinema. The French are making great horror films, and the Koreans have a lot of good stuff.

Sherlock Holmes II with R Downey Jr was pretty entertaining.

Ugh, I thought they over used his slow mo fight planning, just show us the action, the slow mo didn't add anything to it. Would of been funny if his slow mo thoughts of the fights never transpired and the actual fight was much faster due to his thought of it, not the same exact thing... ugh.

I'd say wait for the DVD or stream.

It's been a long time since I saw that one.

I am on a classic SF binge. I have Red Planet Mars, Reptilicus, Missile to the Moon, The Unearthly, and Terror Beneath the Sea lined up. Also I have copies of Uzumaki and ZMD: Zombies of Mass Destruction that I keep putting off watching.

I can relate...:pI was bingeing on these last year and from time to time get back in the groove. There is a great dvd place in town that is filled with classics..
I saw Missile to the Moon., Kronos was interesting, for pure camp
'Tobor' . :D

OMG. I watched Kronos last year. I have never seen Tobor. I'll have to find that.

The Monolith Monsters was pretty good. Also The Day the Earth Caught Fire. And I have to give a shout out for The Green Slime if, for nothing else, the funky title song.
