It looks like the three GTs this year will be won by one of the Big Four. So that concept really does mean something.

Good performance, he is the big favorite now. In a very good position. But he'll have a fight on his hands still.

Once again, wouldn't be so sure about that. He wasn't exactly softpedalling around France
No, but I don't see him fading much. His performance is always very consistent.

Yeah, apart from that one day in Andorra last year.

But he is the favourite. I dno if he is the big favourite, but doing what he did yesterday simply was mighty impressive. It looked like a peak Purito.

I agree, he normally doesn´t loose too much time, he is a consistent rider. Where normally he looses time is in the ITT where he can loose part of the advantage he has.

His style is not so agressive like Froome and Contador, he is a top diesel climber, so he usually mantain some consistence during the mountains even when is dropped. But i really don´t know how he can mantain a top shape until the end with the tour in the legs.

Yep, in the last 4 years, only Horner and Aru managed to snatch a Vuelta. 10 of the 12 GTs were won by the Big Four (Quintana 'just' one GT, the other three won three each).

Froome has 3
Nibali has 3
Contador has 2
Quintana 1

I think Netserk started counting with the Vuelta 2012 since the last 4 Vuelta winners are Aru, AC, Horner and AC. After this years Vuelta the 2012 edition wouldn't be within 4 years anymore but now it still is. Anyway I don't think it makes a lot of sense to include any results from 2012 because the big 4 didn't exist back then. Quintana only became a gt contender 2013, Froome was maybe already the best gc rider in the world but he was a domestique and Nibali from 2012 also wasn't on the level he had one year later.

It's not like the results of the Big 4 in tennis start counting in 2012. Doesn't work like that. Stats of dominance often start before most people recognize it.

Well, the Big Four wasn't a thing in 2013 either. My point wasn't about the emergence of the Big Four, but just how dominant those four riders have been the last four years when it comes to GTs.

Thats actually a good stat. Nibali have won against poor competition, especially Giro 2013 and Tour 2014. I think the competition was quite a bit better in Giro 2016 coupled with Nibali being at a lower level. Quintana's competition was also pretty bad in 2014, while Froome has beaten Contador and Quintana every time in the biggest race on the calendar (apart from 2016 where Contador crashed).

Expecting nothing less than a win tomorrow. He should be the best climber and with a rest day tomorrow, its all in now that Froome and Contador still is suffering. Moreno and Ruben with a furious pace in the bottom.

It looks like that tomorrow he will try to gain some time, he looks very confortable, even if it is not easy to see something in his face...

Tomorrow is a big day, the first of 4 that will decide this vuelta.

An in-form Quintana is a real joy to watch. He is also in the history books now, with stagewins in each GT at age 26 (!)

Lol, cav did that with 25 years

Is Cavendish also a climber? You see these kind of achievements from climbers very rarely, especially at such a young age.

And stages won by GC riders shouldn't be undervalued. Some find it hard to accumulate stage wins, especially epic ones, even when they end up winning the GT

Yeah, but he could still win a lot more stages. Im very, very pleased that he got to win today, it doesn't happen often.

Froome is the only rival now. Gotta take 1 minute more and its pretty done.. Aubisque and Aitana. Quintana on Aitana? :surprised:

Between those and Pena Cabarga, Sallent de Gallego + Llucena stages he should do it before the TT.

Looks like he's really been having some problems during the Tour.
Completely different rider. Looking better on the bike, determined... That's the way his talent should be displayed.
Hasn't wrapped it up yet, though.

This ITT is very similar to the ITT in the Tour, so I'd expect Quintana to lose about 2 minutes to Froome, unless Froome blows up badly at the end of this Vuelta

Amazing ride by Nairito. What a delight to see such a pure climber at work! However I want to warn against premature optimism. He needs more time to be safe for the time trial, he has to avoid crashes etc. It looks good, but this race isn't in the pocket yet.

It's possible he does quite well in the ITT because of his current shape and determination, but he's up against the Olympic bronze medallist, so a lot of work remains to be done...

Last year he lost about 1'30" to the Olympic silver medallist :D
