Few words from Vicente Belda on Quintana.

http://www.biciciclismo.com/cas/site/noticias-ficha.asp?id=68198

Belda was Quintana's sports director in 2009. He says he 'discovered' him in 2007 when they did some tests on different riders from Boyacá. Then some kid called Nairo delivered exceptional results and they knew straight away he was something special.

Nice story
Didn't want to say which are the numbers. Those are very confidential but it would be nice to know. Some previous reporting are relating him with a VO2 max of 91 mL/kg·min.

Yeah. The article only says his numbers are higher than Botero, Sevilla, Heras and Mancebo...

why in gods name is quintana now saying he doesnt know about the giro?
Quintana has said it all the time that he wants the Giro. He would love to climb those mountains. But having said that it is obvious that he received a phone call from the sponsors reminding him who pays the ckecks. It looks like the sponsors don't want to waste the opportunity of having a lot of air time with Quintana at the Tour. And I don't blame them either.

The sponsor want him to start at the Tour, he wants to ride The Giro, Unzue is going to decide. It's as simple as that.

I hope he starts in the Giro, but on the other hand, i want a duel Froome-Quintana in the Tour. Without Quintana, you've got Nibali vs Froome. Well, i know which i prefer.

As we have seen, big issue within the sponsors on where is Nairo going for a Grand Tour in 2014. Giro has already printed posters with Nairo. Movistar is having an internal debate on the Tour. Great thing for a 23rd year old. One thing to add, looks like Javier Guillen (Director of the Vuelta a España) is more concerned about making sure he gets to official word that Nairo is going to the vuelta.

I translate:
"A yes from the Colombian Nairo Quintana to the 2014 Vuelta will allow a great group of riders for the next edition".
"Depending on his team, but we have hopes of seeing Nairo in the vuelta. With Contador, Velverde and Purito already announced, having Nairo will be an amazing group of riders"

Looks like a kind of a reason to me. It's not like they're putting up stuff. Then other articles claimed it's not decided yet, but reasons, there are enough.

If the composition of the Tour influences Quintana's choice of season goals, then I would suggest that he shouldn't be discouraged by long tt. It's at the end of the three weeks race, which means that fatigue will play huge role, and the experience teaches us that anything can happen during the three weeks.
Only if he's afraid of the cobbles, or sees them like insurmountable obstacle.

he doesn't want to do the tour because he prfers the giro as a stagerace in general. he feels the giro suits him more. and also thatway he can do 2 gt's which he really wants

I know right? like the official Giro website having a picture of him fighting for pink...or Nairo himself...or Movistar themselves....we know better. Ask Ryo, he is the only one that knows.
