Quintana may win Tour and Vuelta this year. Both have a lot of mountains and not so much TT. Anybody knows who was the youngest cyclists to win all the 3 Grand Tours?

Pretty sure AC is the youngest to have done it...he was 25.

Nibali was 29 (and closing in on 30) when he won the TDF. Anquetil was 29 in 1963, the only time he ever won (and in fact finished) the Vuelta. Merckx was 27 at the time of his lone Vuelta win (that was his only participation). Hinault, Gimondi and Contador were all 25 when they completed the set.

If you want to be really precise Contador was 25y290d, Gimondi was 25y226d and Hinault was the youngest at 25y206d. Quintana's best cas scenario to complete the GT set is the Vuelta 2015 at which point he would be 25y221d.

I always thought Contador was by far the youngest to complete it. He had the least time between the first (Tour) and last (Vuelta) though

If one thinks about it, had Contador and Froome not crashed out of the Tour, there's a chance that neither would've started the Vuelta leaving Valverde with a good chance of reaching the top step of the podium. He's not that far off of still being capable of winning the Vuelta again if circumstances are right for him.

Fair point!

EITB you're close with those numbers, but I think you forgot about leap years ;)

Hinault was only 19 days younger than Gimondi, not 20 :p

Yes you're right but technically I didn't say that Hinault was 20 days younger than Gimondi. The first 25 years of Hinault's life could have been a day longer (or shorter) than Gimondi due to leap years (something I admit I didn't check) so we can both be right :p

I think Contador going for Tour-Vuelta last year, he was pretty clear about that.

Anyway, in terms of age differences, do we account for the day's getting longer with a couple of microseconds every year?

Leap years are never accounted for when it comes to age differences, I think.
Unless the year at hand is a leap year, of course.

Otherwise when we decide how old people are exactly, we would have to add an extra day for every leap year they have been through and (as you can see here) that is not the case.

IMO Quintana won't really attempt it this year,he should go easy at Vuelta not to overrace himself for next season,he hundreds of year to win a vuelta in the future.

Love this quote from him regarding the cobbles in the Tour:

The truth is that the issue does not bother me. Yes, it?s the first time I?ll ride the pav? but it?s not another world.

Pretty cool approach, rather than going all "I'm a climber! I can't do cobbles! The Tour shouldn't have them."

Pretty sure they aren't. Last time I checked they don't magically enter another World through some portal every time they go onto the cobbles.

I suppose there are some unpaved roads in Colombia where Quintana could have gained some experience with the rough surfaces.
On the other hand, he shouldn't underestimate the impact of racing environment on his ride.

+1.

I think he will have time to practice in Europe.

Besides the E3, has he included some other cobbled race in his calendar?
Valverde's last year's cobbled program could be useful to Quintana this season.

That's the approach of a champion- he knows the obstacle needs to be met like any other one in the profession- plus Dayer (brother) has already tried them and can guide him through the basics - the rest comes from field training & tips from experienced colleagues...

I'd really like to hear a word or two from Quintana.
What are his March goals, for example.

I'm expecting a good ride on Terminillo. It's a kind of climb he likes and he was saying before the race that he's aiming for a good start in Europe.
