I still can't comprehend how professionals, guys who have played this game a lot, would do that. It was tied, they weren't down. Just go to overtime.
Watching 3 coaches call time outs to preserve less than90 seconds on the clock was an act of professionalism and confidence that if the team had the ball they had the real possibility of moving it for a score. In the Charger game it was a pretty awesome outcome.
Was let down, me just one of millions, that Washington could not at least tie it up..
And this will stick with me.. in a game I watched, a roughing the passer call made many seconds after the play, almost looked like players had returned to their respective huddles and flag was thrown... using that same, everything is being looked at by a rules specialist in New York.. why the multiple blown pass interference calls? One were the defender had the receiver wrapped up.. and also unsportsmanlike or unnecessary roughness on a tight end after defender was grabbing him, holding him down.. I mean why only go half way w the technology if it's available before another play is run from scrimmage..?

I think the irony of the Raiders-Pats game was a book end to the NE dynasty, going back to the tuck rule game. They lose to the same team where it started, the team with Josh McDaniels their coach, the last TD made by a former Patriot. It just fits.

Tony Dungee said it very well. He coached against NE many times and always told his team they can't make any mistakes, because the Patriots are not going to beat themselves. Now, look where they are. A play you'd expect from Browns, Lions, Jets, Jaguars teams of the past...

I don't believe Minnesota will get far either. However, they have had a lot of bounces go their way, and some calls. In this light, they could beat the Dallas team that lost to Jacksonville. Though not the Dallas team that wiped the floor with them. I see no possible way they string together enough wins to get to the big game, let alone win it.

I can only echo what I said about refereeing. A damn hard job, but some very bad calls. The Washington non-call. Many calls went against Indy in the 3Q against the Vikings, I think in an effort to make the game more interesting. But the Colts completely blew that game just the same. Terrible defensive play calling. Poor clock management, etc.

I agree. A couple years ago the NFL basically had a test year allowing coaches to challenge PI calls. It wasn't very successful, and needed more time, but the league nixed it.

I still insist PI penalties need to change. If not do what college does, then split it. To where typical PI is 15 yards an an automatic first down, and flagrant PI is a spot foul. I'm just tired of seeing PI called when you have no idea if the receiver would have caught the ball, and half the time a receiver goes down and flips his hand up and down at refs trying to get the call...sometimes it works. It's just crazy.

I'll say what I have before. I think the technology is there to have any call, any play reviewable. But it needs to work like this:

• A centralized officiating crew in NYC reviews every play. Similar to baseball. Removing the on-field referee ever reviewing a play. No more looking under the hood, time consuming nonsense.

• It's incredibly frustrating when we at home can see within seconds if the call was good or not, but referees take what seem like minutes to decide. I say if the reviewing officials cannot make a decision and relay the info back to the crew within 60 seconds, the call on the field stands.

• Referees who work the field need to have at least one week per season, plus off-season training, where they sit in the NY booth reviewing plays as part of that team.

• Challenges remain the same, in regards to losing it means losing a TO, etc.

Referees almost always have 2nd jobs (or refereeing is their 2nd job). Their CBA with the league and salaries is not public info, but it's believed the lower paid referees who work all season are paid about $150k, with an average around $200k. If that's the case, and officiating is viewed as being as crucial as it is, and too many mistakes are made, why not require this to be a person's first or priority job? The money is there. The importance is there?

In cricket, once the play is reviewed it's out of the umpire's hands unless the review team doesn't have enough evidence to overturn the play, the decision then reverts back to the umpire for umpire's call which means they stick with the original call. Every borderline catch, out or contentious play is automatically reviewed by the off field team and often the decision is made quicker than the NFL reviews. Team captains also get a couple of challenges to use for each innings. The good thing about those reviews is that the review decision is shown and heard from the review team as they review it, on the score board and TV, showing the reviews from each angle in normal time and slowed down as well as close ups etc. Sometimes it takes a while but often the mistake shows up on the first images. and the umpires are full time not semi professionals. The umpires all have to be rotated through the review team so when they are not out on the field they are working in the review team instead. As far as I know, all top level tennis umpires are full time professionals, same with the major league soccer competitions, not sure about the NBA refs.

Packers got home on the back of their superior ground game but compared to the craziness of the past two days, not too much to get excited about with two teams that have gone over the cliff this season. Rams actually won a SB last season ! And the Packers were the number one seeds for the past two seasons !

All good points. I know that officials used to just do it a fun side gig, but I think that all but a few are full time now (maybe they have a job in the off season, but they don't rush home to work on Monday morning after their Sunday game).

Oh boy, Packers still in playoff contention. Seahawks need to lose once which looks likely as they have Chiefs next, Commanders need to lose 2 and have Niners and Cowboys, or instead of Was Giants lose 3 which isn’t as likely.

I hope Idaho gets a pro team so we can not see false hope crushing Seattle fans..
Pretty awesome for every fan to see teams at .500 still in the hunt..I think despite my comment that having in really really close going into the final weeks of the season is good for football.
Green Bay win even has them still there!!!

We have ECHL hockey, but we will never see NFL or NBA in Idaho. I grew up in the north part of the state and we used to go to at least one Mariners game and one Seahawks game every year (we missed the first year of the Seahawks, but we saw them for the rest of the '70s). OHH, the Kingdome!

EDIT: The Kingdome has been gone for 20+ years...crazy!

It's funny that in the modern era people have completely forgotten that in the United States we only had 3 major networks.. ABC,CBS and NBC..I think as a kid I saw more Pittsburgh Steelers, Dallas Cowboys and Minnesota Vikings games growing up in Phoenix than people could comprehend.. Terry Bradshaw, Franco Harris and the Steel Curtain were the players who we imitated while playing pick up games in the neighborhood.. I could recognize Don Shula and all Miami Dolphins better than most of my immediate family
I am glad that I only tried to copy OJ's running moves instead of the other stuff he is famous for!!!
Kenny Stabler please return.. George Blanda!!!don't remember if Blanda had a flat toe on his kicking shoe!!???

Only when kicking, not when playing QB!

Did I hear right? That on his deathbed Franco finally confessed that the ball hit the ground... :innocent:

Have they paid it off yet? I remember when they demolished the blessed thing they still owed like a zillion dollars on it.

I saw I think one Seahawk game, and several Mariner games in that old, dark, dank, awful Kingdom. Worst stadium I've ever been in. A dungeon of dim, flickering fluorescent lights, and falling ceiling tiles. I used to have a chunk of it on my front porch after it was demo'd. Had a piece of rebar going through it. I joked it was the thousand dollar doorstop.

Great post on Cricket, Movingtarget. Thanks!

As a kid who had never seen another pro facility is was great (especially in the '70s), but after seeing other facilities...

I do wonder why they only cleaned the bathrooms twice a year though.
