New football helmet (Vicis pro) on the market by startup company Vicis:
http://www.bloomberg.com/features/2016-vicis-football-helmet/.
Partly funded ($100K) by the NFL (out of $10M total startup funds). How bout that NFL? This helmet design will push Riddell and Schutt. Innovative buckling strut design demonstrated in crash dummy gif in the link looks promising. Regular helmets cost maybe $500. This Vicis will cost $1500. Prices should drop if the company gains solid foothold in the market, coupled with mass production of a cheaper model for youth.

Any bets Belichick told/asked Robert Kraft to stop talking about Bradys suspension and deflategate? To minimize distractions during camp?

Even if PM did use HGH or PEDs, it certainly did not help his play last season, even if it helped him get on the field.

Interesting read. American football in Europe with European sponsored teams is alive, although not sure how well. There are 24 teams under the European Federation of American Football (EFAF). http://www.efaf.info
But EFAF is not the NFL. Players are not paid much (barely enough to live on), so the skill level is around NCAA D-III or lower. Team rosters are almost entirely Europeans because each team can only have 1 or 2 Americans on their roster (EDIT: or on field at same time). So the NFL might consider the EFAF a barometer on how well the NFL might do in Europe, because to do well there it needs to be sustained as opposed to a few singular events like the NFL currently participates in.

The career of Pittsburgh TE Ladarius Green, signed in off season from San Diego, may be over due to concussions he got last season playing for the Chargers. Apparently Green is still suffering from headaches stemming from those concussions. While bad & sad for Green, this case is also messed up because Green did not divulge his concussion related symptoms prior to signing with PIT. It also sucks for PIT if he's done because he's a stud TE and was pegged as their starter.

And yet he passed a physical. You'd think in today's day and age and all the concern about concussions, this would have been more scrutinized in the physical.

Carson Wentz was pretty well hammered in his NFL debut, even though Philly won the game. He ended up with a broken rib, and will miss time. What's bad about this is he was unlikely to play much in the regular season anyway, but he would have seen a lot of action in the preseason.

The Raiders backups looked quite solid against Arizona's backups. Connor Cook going 7-11. George Atkinson was the real star for the Raiders though. Gaining 97 yards on some nifty runs.

are we daring to dream for the Raiders this year?

Will they take the next step?

I'm so excited about the season starting, so much intrigue this year, how will Carolina respond, can Denver's defence get them deep into the playoffs again, which teams will step up, who will drop, how will Bridgewater go with another year under his belt, what's going to happen in Cleveland?

Always so many stories.

On concussion, an MRI or some imaging ought to be routine. But a team may not request imaging if the player comes in saying he has no concussion symptoms. In that case the team doctor might just ask for some kind of memory test be done (e.g. recalling ridiculous playing card sequences).

I'm hoping Raiders win the division at least and see what happens after that. Also interested to see how they use ex-Hawk Bruce Irvin. In the first preseason game they had him standing up, not down in three-point stance as edge rusher, where he was not as effective last year in Seattle after having bulked up significantly from his college playing weight. But he has his former LB coach now as his DC, who knows what he can do. Plus it was just a preseason game.

Re: suspensions -- I get the feeling that Roger G's remaining time left as the NFL's commish could soon run out. All depends on how much push-back the players and NFLPA want to put up.

I have not been paying attention to this episode in the life of 40-YO Darren Sharper. He just got an 18 year sentence for drugging then raping 16 women across 4 states. Won't get out until age 58 if he serves the whole term. Not enough IMO.

Very interested to see how the Seahawks do this season. Rawls and Graham will be back from their injuries. They've had a good draft and made some nice deals to try and improve the areas where they were 'lacking' last season. Russell Wilson should be entering the prime of his career now and I am excited to see if he can continue to impress. No more Beast Mode Lynch, but they have enough depth and confidence in Wilson to make up for the ground game that Lynch had. Obviously him still being on the team would have been that much better, but even so, I see them as contending for the new few years, still. Cardinals may still be good, and should provide a nice test for the Hawks in the division, but 49ers are...not sure what they'll do, that club has been in shambles the last couple seasons. The Rams are too inconsistent (although they seem to always play well against the Hawks!) and I am not sure how the move to LA will impact the players.

In my opinion, the Seahawks make it back to the playoffs and will make it to the NFC championship game, at least.

As to Goodell leaving the commissioner's office, I don't see that anytime soon, simply because the NFL is making money hand over fist with him at the helm, and the owners have him working for them as a priority. The current CBA ends after the 2020 season, and you can rest assured the NFLPA is going to make a huge push to either have him removed, or his powers severely curbed before they sign another contract. They will push this issue to it's limit.

The big thing I question on Seattle is the OL, can Tom Cable really get them to gel and excel? I also question how great the defense is going to be. Good, yes. But still great? We'll see. Having said that, they're definitely a powerhouse of a team. They have a lot of playmakers, and are solid across the board (sans questions on OL), very well run, and very well coached.

Seattle's biggest NFC competition may come from within their own division in Arizona, who is just stacked. But they have questions too. Mainly age at QB, and Palmer's inconsistency in big games.

Having said that, I'm sure Carolina will be plenty good again. Maybe not 15-1 and should have won the Superbowl good, but still quite good. The NFC North also looks to be a solid division. Green Bay and Minnesota are both very good teams.

In the AFC, right now I like New England and Pittsburgh. Safe picks, I know. But experience and coaching counts for a lot. I'm curious how well Indy, Cincy and Baltimore do. The AFC North, and West loo, most interesting. In the West, Denver, KC or Oakland could win that division.

I have to credit Cleveland and RG3 in that he's so far, in the preseason, playing the game he said he wanted to play after he got hurt in Washington, that is as a drop back passer who uses his arm first. He threw some really nice balls, some of them deep, against Atlanta. He showed this ability in college, and it's really nice to see here.

It looks like Harrison, Matthews and Peppers have agreed to meet with the NFL about the PED allegations.

You may be right...
...The current CBA ends after the 2020 season, and you can rest assured the NFLPA is going to make a huge push to either have him removed, or his powers severely curbed before they sign another contract. They will push this issue to it's limit.
Goodell probably thinks he is untouchable and can do anything he wants. There is a danger in that thinking. If he is not careful and players decide they have had enough, why wait for 2020? All players have to do is strike or walk out and then where does all that money the league was making hand over fist go? Just saying.

Seattle? I believe their OL will be better than most people think. After acquiring J Webb (last Marchish) and J Evans (recently), I'm not sure either of those are going to make the squad, especially Webb. Partly due to improved play of the others, but also lack of conditioning by Webb. Or they might become high priced backups. Moving Britt to Center has made a big difference in his play. On runs, Britt reminds me of Steve Hutchinson by mauling DTs 5-10 yards downfield or sealing off. The other 4 OL positions are also still a work in progress, but overall they are much improved. Guards Glowinski and rookie Ifedi look really solid, and along with C Britt are doing a job. Tackles Sowell and Gilliam look okay, but they have not been tested by speed rushers yet. In preseason though, clearly the biggest downfall to the starting offense has been Wilson, who has struggled getting the ball out of his hands quickly. Most believe someone will correct that problem. Carroll as of today has publicly announced that as an issue (Wilson knows). WR and TE positions will not be much of an issue. Lockett is already looking like the next go-to guy to go with Baldwin. And as much as I liked Lynch, his retirement will make the RB play better. Lynch was a load, but Michael (so far in preseason) and Rawls (based on last season) are both much more explosive. And Michael seems to have learned his lesson that the NFL is a 12 month job and that you have to protect the rock at all cost. Rawls YPC last season after Lynch was hurt was a whopping 5.6, and Michael is averaging about 5.5 this preseason. Neither needs much of a crease to pop it.

Defensively they are deep in the secondary. It was all a buzz in the offseason when SEA started by inking Lane. But some of the better play has come from CB-SS Shead (who never seems to make a mistake or be out of position at either position) and SS McCray. They go 6'-3", 6'-2", though not quite as heavy as Chancellor. Then they have another popper in rookie Tyvis Powell (6'-3" 211LB former Buckeye), who has already won a ST roster spot in my heart with his decleating hits. And 6'-3" CB Tharold Simon just may be the next Sherman if he can stay healthy. At DT and DE they are deep and will be fine, even without an interior DT like Suh. Last night the DT rotation of Clark, rookie Reed, and McDaniel were tough. McDaniel (signed this week and former Super Bowl teammate returning home) won a roster spot already IMO. Their thinnest position is LB, where the biggest job up for grabs is the SAM. They lost last year's SAM (Irvin) to Oakland. But the SAM really does not have to do much in this defense: #1) turn the play inside where your teammates help is coming from and don't let them get outside, 2) cover short routes. Last year Irvin did well at #1, but sucked at #2. So what did incumbant Morgan do last night? Turn the runs inside, not let them outside. Coverage wise, he's quicker than Irvin was.

SEA's starting defensive unit is tough to gauge right now though. Through their first two preseason games, the SEA starters have yet to run a blitz. That makes it easier for offenses to move the ball down the field. So, SEA defensively is not showing their cards, Chancellor has not even played yet. That's preseason ball for you. And that's why I could not say above that the SEA OL are playing like a bunch of pro bowlers. If this was mid-season and SEA OL was playing like this then they would be a bunch of pro bowlers.

ST is too early to say much because SEA likes using starters on those squads. But I will say this. SEA let long snapper Clint Gresham go in the offseason. So? Nobody knows who Gresham was because all his snaps were consistently spot on, and well, he was a LS. This new guy SEA picked up tosses mole-rapers. Often. Gotta fix that.

All that said, I agree the biggest challenge in the division will come from the Cards. It will be interesting to see how Britt and the Guards do vs Nkimdiche. And Donald for the Rams. Oh, and Rams always seem to give SEA a stiff challenge. Like a dog fight.

In AFC, agree on your assessment of NE, PIT, CIN, DEN, KC, OAK, but meh on BAL. Besides a OAK resurgence I'd like to see CLE drop bombs on CIN, PIT, & BAL with a healthy RGIII. Why? They are due, and I like LT Joe Thomas. Even if I also like the Red Rocket in Cincy.

To add to my recent post, I'll also be looking to see how the Broncos do. Always wonder how a defending champion does the following season. Not sure if they are going to contend for the SB again, but stranger things have happened. Then the ever present Patriots, Steelers and Packers. I don't think the other three teams in the AFC are good enough, yet, to unseat the Pats, even with Brady missing the first four games. The Steelers are in a much tougher division and I am looking forward to the Bengals seeking revenge. The Ravens won't have another down year, IMO, which will make that division one heck of a battle. The Packers with Rodgers are always there or thereabouts and as long as they have him and he is healthy and can still use that rocket of an arm, and the organization equips him with decent receivers and tight ends, they should be contending again. The Vikings had a good year last year. Yes, it ended with a thud courtesy of that Walsh missed FG, but they have a young team and Bridgewater should be better with a little more experience. Not sure what the Bears and Lions will do. The Bears are unpredictable, and the Lions haven't been that good. Some here have mentioned the Raiders. I, too, think they can pull of the division. They are a bit like the Vikings in terms of a young core of players that should be making a difference. Now is as good a time for them to win the division and perhaps do something in the playoffs.

Already worrying signs for Sanchez at Denver. He will be lucky to win the QB spot it seems. Lynch is already showing glimpses of why Denver wanted him. Scrappy game against the 49ers but entertaining. Kaep still having issues with his throwing arm so Gabbert looks like being the starter at the 49ers but Ponder and Driskel have also looked pretty good so far. Wide receivers look like more of an issue for the 49ers than the QB position at the moment. Rogers doing an ACL has not helped.

Looks like the guy from Northwestern is starting next game for the Broncos? I think Sanchez is out. Haven't been following closely, but that's what I picked up half listening to the NFL network the other day.

I'm excited to see what AFC West defenses can do against what could be a real clown show in Denver.

Yah, in today's NFL #4 is high for a RB, but if they can establish a good running game that might give TR one or two more solid years. Elliott was by far the best back (straight ahead, cuts, outside, catch, block...) so they needed to get him, and didn't want to take a chance on him going before they got to their second pick. I'll let you know if it was a good move...in February! :D

I'd say that the Cowboys had a bigger need to pick a great CB, but we'll see.

Dallas have had their QB injury problems in recent seasons, but getting down to their 3rd string with still one pre-season game to play is taking it too far . Dak Prescott seems to have good numbers from College, but this is the major league now.

That's terrible for Bridgewater. And team. Now Sanchez or Kaepernick might have a landing spot. Kind of a positive curiosity for Viks, their fans, including those on the other side of the Big Pond, is German Moritz Bohringer has made the 75 man roster as WR.

Romo is out again as well. More talk about Kaep getting cut from the 49ers since the whole anthem sitting saga and his poor hit out against the Packers. 49ers have lost Ellington for the season.
