You've been talking up this kid since December, and I agree with you. He was solid on a team/offense that wasn't. I don't see any of the top draft prospects coming in and outplaying him. In the long run will they have better careers than him? That is the $$$$ question.

Let's be honest and suggest it'll be hard for any QB to get through 17 games without injury? As for being a risky pick; I think we all agree 1st round QBs are seldom worth as much as an O or D lineman that can stay with the team for 10 years and the rarity of a reliable 1st round starter is what every coach prays for so his job doesn't end that season. Tight Ends come a strong second IMO as well for durable value.

Here's the thing. Aiden O'Connell isn't Tom Brady, or Peyton Manning, though he has a similar classic pocket passer style. He'll never, ever be like Patrick Mahomes or Lamar Jackson. But he doesn't have to be. He's smart, has a good arm, and steadily improved throughout last season. His two biggest issues were forcing the ball in early games (though he ended the season on a 9/0 TD to Int. streak) and he's not very mobile. But this too he doesn't need to be. Moving in and around and out of the pocket enough can be taught. His deep field accuracy needs some work, but this can be worked on and taught too, because the arm strength is there. In this regard I sort of liken O'Connell to Matt Ryan, Joe Flacco, maybe Eli Manning. Won a lot of games, and rings (sorry Matt, you should have!). Two similar style of players today that perhaps could be a goal to aspire to are Joe Burrow and Matt Stafford. They too are mostly pocket passers, rarely run, but move and extend plays quite well.

Now, if the Raiders trade the farm away to move up and get Jayden Daniels, all bets are off. I don't think they are going to do this, and if they did, they would probably deal O'Connell away in the process.

Denver fans have been ever optimistic and patient. How are they now after Russell Wilson is gone and Sean Payton is the target?

The fans have just about had it. I think it's do or die for Payton this season - win & get to the playoffs or else. Payton wasn't brought here on a rebuilding platform but to starting winning immediately (he even said last year's team was playoff caliber & that he'd be "pissed" if they didn't make the playoffs).

And I'm wondering with this move if he thinks he can turn Wilson into another Steve Young. Lol. I guess we'll see on Thursday - if the Broncos don't take a QB in the 1st, then Wilson is the guy for 2024.

Coach Saints got credit for a lot of what Drew Brees did over time. He may as well enjoy the ride while the dollar$ are rolling in.

Seems the SB win kick started him. There was rumors of retirement a year or two ago. Maybe he does have some health issues and he has had a long and successful career already. Chiefs want to keep a good thing going it seems and they have every chance of winning again in the upcoming season. Shanahan can't seem to get over the final hurdle at the moment

What's most stunning is just how little the Jets get in return. Unreal.

It may be in Zach's best interest to have Denver draft a QB at #12, and let the two compete. This also may be in Payton's best interest. If the Broncos stink this year, he can always use the excuse that QB 1 didn't perform, but they still have QB 2.

One quiet fact that went under the radar is about a week after Derek Carr got Pete Carmichael fired as OC in New Orleans, Sean Payton hired him to be the assistant HC of the offense. Insiders sometimes said Pete was the unspoken brains behind the Saints success with Brees, but rarely got credit. I'm curious what Pete, with of course Sean, this old Saints dynamic duo, can do with Wilson (and...Nix? Penix?).

The one HC who will get fired after 2024 is Dennis Allen, if the Saints don't get into the playoffs, and play well. Carr might get him fired too.

The talk was he would retire after the 2023 Super Bowl win (over Philly) and Eric Bienemy would take over as HC. Remember that talk? Looks like Andy did get SB happy, and now EB is out of the league (at UCLA as their OC, which may have been his choice versus fighting for another OC job in the NFL, who knows?).

If the Broncos draft a QB at #12, he's the franchise QB & Wilson would be competing against Stidham for the backup job. If the franchise QB isn't ready to start day 1, then Wilson or Stidham would be the starter for the time being.

We saw this scenario before with Fields & Pickett. Fields wasn't ready to go & was supposed to sit a year under starter Andy Dalton. But Dalton got hurt very early in the year & Fields was thrown in. When Dalton recovered from his injury & cleared to play, the Bears decided to stick with Fields for the remainder of the season. With Pickett he wasn't ready either & Trubisky was named the starter. Lol. But 3 weeks into the season the Steelers were 0-3 & Tomlin made the change to Pickett, who was the starter for the remainder of the season.

This is what is so perplexing with this trade: Is Wilson brought here to merely complete for the backup job or is he the franchise QB now given a 2nd chance with the Broncos?

Draft underway. I was right in that Penix went in the top 10. But what surprised me is he was taken before JJ, and by the Falcons, who have Kirk Cousins. The Vikings have to be absolutely ecstatic, leaving McCarthey to them, the guy they wanted.

But the Penix pick baffles me. This means Atlanta is expecting him to sit the entire season? Was owner Arthur Blank aware of this pick beforehand?! Maybe they are thinking it's at least a 50% chance either Cousins or Penix gets hurt this coming season?!

Will the Jets use the same thinking and draft Bo Nix? Thinking he could sit this season behind Rodgers, and there's a 50% chance Rodgers will get hurt anyway? If not, I'm now baffled if Nix will go to Denver.

Raiders drafted Brock Bowers...because he fell to them? Team didn't need a TE at all, but they could have sure used OT Fuaga, who the Saints happily took. This begs the age old question, "do you take the best player available?" Raiders would say yes. Bowers NextGen stats has his production at 99.0. Highest of any player in the draft.

Some of you Seattle fans have to be at least somewhat happy with Byron Murphy.

If the Broncos figured all along they'd take Nix, why bother to trade for Wilson, at all? I don't get it.

Yes, Cousins days are numbered. Good thing they are only paying him $180m, with no easy way out of the contract until after 2026. Penix will be like 28 by the time he gets the job if Cousins stays healthy, plays well.

Clown show. Yes.
