I'm waiting for some fanboy(s) to back me up here.
anyway, don't get me wrong. I was only addressing his superficial qualities, which is the only thing I had an eye for when I started watching cycling in the late 90s.
But, believe me, I'm quite eager to see Armstrong fall right now and I'm fully conscious of why he deserves the punishment he no doubt is going to get.

Brian Can I join your group?
Reg No. **** off.
Brian I didn't want to sell this stuff. It's only a job. I hate the Romans as much as anybody.

Perhaps if there were either sarcasm or tongue-in-cheek on display. Neither were. Epic Fail is accurate.

It's English. From "Life of Brian," one of the best comedies ever made.

Entirely accurate. I admit that I was relieved that the author 'fessed up tho. He's a failure at humor but thank God he wasn't serious!

Ok, name me a tour de france winner with more charisma than armstrong.

(NB: i use the term charisma here in a neutral sense, i.e. regardless of whether this charisma is positive or negative)

Whether you like it or not, it's quite obvious that Armstrong could not have gotten all these people behind him, ride for him, and lie and cheat for him, if he did not have at least a minimum of charisma.
(again, the term charsima does not imply anything of 'being a good person').

I still do not agree with the word charisma to describe what LA had.

A mid 6 figure salary and once "in the circle and on the team nutrition program" will go a long way towards getting some to keep the omerta for a period of time. We can see the unraveling of time and absence of salary at work here with FL and TH and probably GH and others. If Heras, Beltran, and other ex postal turned positive after leaving lived in the US, there would likely be many more birdies singing at the moment. If you call charisma the ability to woo soldiers from a foreign army with gold and riches and protection, that's your call. I might call those who abide for the time being mercenaries.

And Alberto? You really do need to learn spanish. He is a very mature, well spoken, humble, and seemingly very nice guy. Light years and galaxies beyond any spot LA has ever stood in the pantheon of human existence.

A smile and an egomaniacal drive to control and dominate does not charisma make.

The entire LA machine has been a carefully orchestrated and brilliant machine put in place by many others much smarter than LA and all tied to something dear and emotional, cancer, to many millions. Not charisma.

After attacking and putting riders on the front to gap the "team leader", AC in the tour a few years ago... After explicitly stating that AC would be team leader many mos before....

Avoiding the post tour celebration dinner with the team and AC....

Tweeting while in the back of the team bus that something stinks when AC arrived to give watches to the riders from the previous year's winning tour team...

I'd venture a guess that 99% of the riders in the peloton were/are aware of these incredibly charismatic LA moments and will never forget them when the piper comes calling.
I might suggest a word similar to charisma but with a few different letters, try chancre.

Best comment in a long time, Hitchey. I was going to reply to that same comment, but you've done it way better than I could have done it.

Lance and his team focused and went out to win. And they achieved their goals.True Lance psychotic determination to go for it at 38 after a 3 year lay-off. Unfortunatley Lance did not get the magical 8 in 2009.
Contador is a fantastic rider but he does not have Lance's charm. Please admit it, you only can love him or hate him, no in betweensies.
With Contador, who may someday beat Merckx's GT wins, a total winner, but not a charming fellow like Lance. Contador is kind of, well just a regular guy, who is the greatest cyclist.
My guess is after Contador retires, Lance will be the more respected rider and individual of the two. Even if the lies about Lance's doping continue.

Wow, somebody got their panties all up in a wad about some guy writing an article and making jokes about cycling as if your livelihood entirely depended on it.

You probably love NASCAR articles like this surely.

It really is no story if Lance doped. We need to listen to Dave Z. this is only another doping controversy. Lance did what it took to win. It has not been proven that he is a doper. I think he is pretty awesome, truly a neat guy and cycling traditionalist.

Is that what will be on his headstone? "A cycling traditionalist"

:D

well what is it 'lies' about his doping or he 'did what it took to win'? which the world knows, except those wearing their yella wrist bands over their eyes and ears, was take copious amounts of PEDs.

Hard to understand how anyone other than Lance or one of his inner circle would know if Lance took "copious amounts" of PEDs for any of his victories.
Of course there are going to be suspicians about any dominating athlete, during these times. If EPO was involved in any of Lance's mighty fine wins, Lance and his suppliers were simply bulldozing a level playing field.
If Lance "dozed, as in bulldozed his wins" why pray tell was their no uproar for those first 3 big wins, the core states, 93 world's or Lance's infamous Tours 99, Swiss 2001 or the dopers extravaganza 2003 Tour.
Obviously Lance is super talented. His adversaries were super talented. No issue.

I agree with Sniper!

He's talking about the general perception of the two riders by the unwashed! Not the typical view held in hallowed halls of the Clinic™!

C'mon, Contador's "pistorelo" salute is both sad and cringe-inducing at the same time. Much like his YouTube apology to Andy Schleck in last year's Tour. Which was completely unnecessary and pointless. He should have just embraced his inner bad boy and got in Andy's face, WWF style, and said something like "I don't give a sh!t about tradition! I'm here to win! Second is first loser..." Something Ullrich should have done in the 2003 TdF. Give people a reason to hate and they'll love you even more ...

having said that, I still hope Contador wipes the floor with the Schlockmeister ...

And then gets banned ...

Is this the new spin? "no story here. Cycling's a dirty mess." Wonderboy cast as the old Hollywood "hooker with a heart of gold" character? Fail.

Likely multiple felony violations for controlled substances is okay for the win? How about orchestrating a doping program? Widespread fraud? Still okay? Where's the line? Phrase your reply carefully because chances are excellent Wonderboy crossed it.

How's the weather in Austin?

Oh wait, let me guess-another poster coming on board so we we can ascertain why Armstrong, even under the medical supervision of Dr. Ferrari and on one of the most comprehensive doping programs ever, is still the most charismatic and most awesomest rider that ever lived.

How utterly exciting...:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:
