Well...right now is kinda the only time to speculate since we'll probably get an update at some point in the next days. First thing that came to mind for me was that he was just super sick with bronchitis. Doesn't really explain it but seems normal to wonder if it may have contributed.

If they had to actually defibrillate then his heart was beating too fast to fill and pump properly so they had to slow it down to knock it back to normal. The bronchitis could have traveled to his heart and that’s why it happened.
All that matters is that he is okay and hopefully getting better.

A sickness like Bronchitis can leave you with various post-viral consequences, one of which is inflammation of the heart. It's why you shouldn't train with colds/flu. Ok, the chances of suffering cardiac arrest are slim, but they are greater than normal.
Wishing Colbrelli the best. If he did suffer cardiac arrest and is conscious now, he is a very lucky man. He has a second chance at life. I hope it's good.

Have to also add in the exertion of him already racing and then trying to sprint.
Holy crap! I hope he recovers in the best possible way, firstly back to normal life, secondly back to his best on the bike, though I suspect - assuming he's well enough to race again - he'll be taking an enforced break so his body can recover.

Story reminds me of Kim Kirchen a little bit…
Fortunately Colbrelli hasn't been in a coma like Kirchen was, and he might already have been able to update his own instagram account after the incident. Of course at this stage we don't know if it will also put an end to Colbrelli's career like it did for Kirchen, but at least it appears to be less severe.

I suffered cardiac arrest when I was out jogging -- keep in mind that I was fit, able to cycle 160 km or more no problem, nonsmoker, nondrinker etc -- and I was incredibly lucky that there was both an off-duty firefighter and a defibrillator nearby.
This could have been so, so much worse. I was having Christian Eriksen flashbacks (and a bit of my own) when I heard about Colbrelli.
(in my case it was a rogue bit of plaque that detached itself from a cardiac artery. I'll never be able to ride like I once could but believe me I am happy to be alive! Even if I have to read all the sh**posting in the Remco thread...)

There is a little bit of research to suggest that extremely high levels of cardiovascular activity can cause cardiac issues. Moderate amounts of activity are best, and these guys push themselves to the limit and there is a lot of stress on the heart. I don't think that has anything to do with Colbrelli's case though, nor Bolder's

Well yes, mRNA vaccines can sometimes have that side effect (myocarditis), however so can COVID, along with other heart issues, even months later. Colbrelli had COVID in January, so it's not impossible that this is a COVID after-effect. But hopefully it's more related to the recent bronchitis (though that could also be a possible COVID aftereffect). It's not recommended to be vaccinated soon after a COVID infection so he's not likely to have had a vaccination since his infection.
