He did a great ride and is a promising rider for sure. But blindly stating that he was the best rider of this race...? I can think of at least ten riders who were just as good, if not better (especially if we are not considering final position, which we are not, as he placed fourth).

I think that happens far too much around here.
Some folks post as if they are still in short trousers.

All said and done, it was a much better race thank expected. A lot of guys deserve a lot of chapeaux, since there are only 3 medals given out.

Vino for President!

Uran easily wins the biggest fail of the year award. Seriously I almost hope he did take a bribe otherwise he's going to regret that one for a looong time.

As for the rest of the race, I'm pretty sure things would have gone very differently if they'd had radios. Gilbert wasnt going to have much chance after his earlier heroics, so why not at least give Boonen a chance to medal in the sprint???

Same for O'Grady. Been in the break since the very beginning. Is obviously going to be tired by the end and when was the last time he won a sprint? If Australia seriously wanted a medal they should have been on the front the last 30km working for Goss.

The Germans did themselves no favours either. Sat on Cav's wheel most of the race and then came to the front when a miracle was needed to bring the break back. All the sprinters riding against Cav and ended up with nothing. Working for a chance of any medal is a hell of a lot better than 20th. :confused:

GB did all they could. Proud of their efforts today. Congrats to Vino, played it perfectly.

Then I said, why would a country ride if they have man in the lead group? I'm just explaining tactics, it's not logical to ride.

Then his final reply was "You explaining tactics now, are you eddy ****ing merckx? at least we still have the Tour 1-2 #gb"

They probably could if they'd controlled who got into the breakaway a bit better. Too many top riders had people (sometimes top riders) to domestique for them. Cancellara had a couple of teammates, LLS and the Don had Castroviejo (and Piti pulled himself a few times), Gesink was there riding for Boom and Nibali for Paolini... too many teams with multiple riders and reasons to pull. Did I see another Kazakh in there at one point too?

Actually Urán's got a decent kick on him, but maybe after 250k he doesn't. Or maybe he does for hill finishes but is a bit tame on the flat. The reason he was pulling hard and sharing the work with Vino is that the Olympics AREN'T just like another Classic... there's a prize for 2nd and 3rd. If he doesn't work, yes he may get Gold as he then outsprints Vino... but he may get nothing.

By doing his share of the work he guarantees himself at least a silver, even if he then knows he has to rely on fortune, a chain slip, a crash or Vino bonking in order to get the gold. As Óscar Freire says, "to win you must first be prepared to lose". A group of less than 4 up the road in the Olympics is one of the absolute only times when riders can't be prepared to lose. They've still got something to play for.

Didn't Boonen skip the TDF for that? He didn't seem to be part of the Belgian plan at all. Not sure Gilbert's tactics were the best either.

I'd say Urán is normally faster than Vino. But taking your eyes off your rival with just 250 m to go is so moronic, it's only natural for peope to suspect some shady business.

I think someone here is thinking in abit to much of a cycling perspective here. A silver medal in the Olympics is ten thousand times better than a second in a normal classic. Of course Uran was willing to help Vino pull even if he was a veaker finisher... Jesus ****ing Christ....

Funny that exact conversation is happening in here. Seems cycling fans as of two weeks ago are no better than most posters in here.
