Yes, I've got to say that they might have had a bit of overconfidence thinking they could just drive the gap to nil when they wanted to.

That's the feeling I get. Also they lead the pace from the start. They should have let the race evolve. No other team was going to work once they got on the front from kilometer 4

Can't blocked him. But I can do from memory.
His original tweet was:
"Why didn't the other countries help? They all lost too..."

then I explained that most countries had a rider in the lead group, so ofcourse they didn't work.

Then he said "Going through comments of people and criticizing them. You're probably from one of those countries. ****er."

Then I said, why would a country ride if they have man in the lead group? I'm just explaining tactics, it's not logical to ride.

Then his final reply was "You explaining tactics now, are you eddy ****ing merckx? at least we still have the Tour 1-2 #gb"

Hilarious :D

lol idiots. . . . idiots everywhere

Didn't Boonen skip the TDF for that? He didn't seem to be part of the Belgian plan at all. Not sure Gilbert's tactics were the best either.

Gilbert wasn't trying to win. He was trying to make it hard for GB because it was going to come down to a sprint. Boonen would have gone from 3km to go if it had all came back together.

Boonen punctured with 3km to go.

Nice to edit down my post.

Vino deserved the win, played it brilliantly. The Australians, Germans, Belgians etc must be real happy with that outcome. All could have medaled.

Still I think he might be afraid of Vino as 10 seconds later...

I am reminded of the Russians scheduling the women's relay last at the Biathlon World Championships in 2011, specifically for the purpose of finishing on a Russian triumph. This was scheduled first like this for a GB gold medal to start the games... and it failed almost as badly as the Russian ploy in Khantiy-Mansiysk.

I think the Belgians were victim of their own plan, they had two guys in front. Sure couldn't detect a plan for the Germans :)

Just put a rider in the first group and you don't have to do anything anymore. Means you might lose one guy somewhat sooner, but keep three fresh ones while others do the work.

But Britain wanted to do it the hard and the cocky way.

I dont think GB did it the hard way or the cocky way...I would call it the unintelligent or miscalculated way.

Nah. Cycling was first event in Bejing as well, seems to be normal.

Please tell us more?

She opened by telling Vino that everybody was disappointed that he'd won. After he'd given his fist answer which ended with him saying that it was a great way to finish a career, she followed up by saying that everybody rode against GB. After that he rode away unsurprisingly. She was looking anywhere but at Vino as though she was totally uninterested during his reply. All she cared about was getting some sound bite on Cav.
Have to say that apart from the opening ceremony I'm totally underwhelmed with the BBCs production and presentation so far.

Sorry I clipped the ten words about the winner that were sandwiched by three paragraphs of whinging. I guess they were actually meaningful as opposed to the obligatory setup for an avalanche of **** hurtness. :D

I'd say Urán is normally faster than Vino. But taking your eyes off your rival with just 250 m to go is so moronic, it's only natural for peope to suspect some shady business.

Theres no way on this Earth Uran did anything shady.
Unfortunately history tells us that kind of thing(or even less) is not plan A in Columbia.

Well, unintelligent probably because they overestimated themselves. When you start riding on front together from km 0 you give the signal that you are confident that you're gonna easily win. At least do it then, otherwise the fail is massive.

Great storybook ending, eh fatPat!?! :D

Sadly we may not see any more racing from Uran. May take up Kazakh residency with all the wine/women on man could ever want!

Will Vino pass up the opportunity to do at least one race in a pair of golden shoes?

From the Herald Sun newspaper in Melbourne:

THE men's Olympic road race has been hijacked by Alexandre Vinokourov - one of cycling's shadiest figures - as Stuart O'Grady's magnificent breakaway attempt ended in a gallant sixth and Great Britain's gold medal plan for Mark Cavendish crumbled.

Sounds typical BBC to me yes. I was watching Silverstone GP a few weeks ago and instead of talking about the race, they talked about the brilliant spectators, that they were the best in the sport, only.

How cruel life can be sometimes. Team GB and Swiss worked off their as..es and are left with nothing, just (hopefully not) an injured Cance again. A perfect setup and then again this. Even worse than Flanders. I am so sad.

On the other hand it was a great race. Loads of well behaved and disciplined spectators, no carnival, no nudity and not standing in the way to take pictures. Don't understand why the Germans did not help Team GB earlier. Too little, too late. Race delivered better cycling action than expected. So sad for Cance. Not that he didn't win, but that he seems to be injured seriously. Looks like he's also out for any medal chance on August 1.

Respect to Vino. Although I have mixed feelings. While he never confessed to doping, he paid at least for it by being banned, but I like him as a cyclist who always fights and attacks and does not ride "calculator style". Uran completely slept when he broke away. How can this happen? Incredible.

I'd almost forgotten why I loved this sport after the Tour (not saying it was absolute crap, but it just didn't do much for me). Today reminded me, thanks Vino and Uran.

And TGAK finally earned his nickname. In the break for 235 km and got 3rd in the end! Superb ride.

Hopefully the Women's race will be as good tomorrow.

OH its cycling we'd better wheel out Hugh Porter, who may well be the worst presenter on the BBC.

That seems a bit harsh. Everyone knew what they needed to do for Cav. It was not as if it was a surprise. As soon as the first break went GB would needed to chase. Given in the end neither the Germans or the Aussies did any significant chasing even in the dying stages I doubt anything would have been different at the start.

You could fault them for not trying to get someone in the break though but who would you put?

I don't mind Vino but it's a pretty terrible result for the sport...

Good race though and great to see so many people come out to support.

Millar, Froome, probably.
