I have to say that I believe him about the burglar thing. What makes me believe that what happened was rather a tragic accident than a murder in purpose, is the fact that he lives in Pretoria. Having relatives there I can assure you that people live and sleep with guns by their side because this place has indeed huge criminality problem.

Does Santa come to your house twice a year? People sleep with guns under their pillows all over the world and Pretoria, especially where he stays is not all dangerous. The estate he lives on harder to get into than the pentagon. I have a mate who lives there and been there many times and security is tight it's a joke due to then people living there.

I think the comment was meant in context - I think?. context of SA social division of blacks v whites. Namely whole communities of blacks living in getto's etc..being socially excluded.

Other point from this thread, if due process sees Pistorious being let off for roid rage mitigation, I for one will give up on life as we know it.

According to this Telegraph article Mrs. Steenkamp was on the bathroom when Pistorius decided she was, an um, intruder. I suppose this leaves most people stumped with regards to the veracity of the 'intruder' story.

Well even if the judge believes him a reckless homicide charge might be an option. You know, opening fire without checking if it was someone you should be shooting at.

According to some frequent posters in the U.S. Politics thread, there is no such thing as reckless homicide within your own home. Better to kill one of your family members by mistake than to have some burglar kill them intentionally. I’m not sure that these posters believe in reckless homicide anywhere, if they are the one pulling the trigger.

One commenter to an article on Pistorius revealed to us that he almost killed his own son when the latter entered his home. Apparently, he had given strict orders to his son not to leave the house without telling him, the father. So when the father heard someone coming through the back door, he naturally assumed it was a home invasion, and to hear him tell it, was an inch from pulling the trigger.

Was this idiot chastened? Nope, said he didn't regret his actions at all, that his son had learned a very important lesson: never leave the house without telling him. The father, quite obviously, learned nothing at all.

According to Dutch newspapers, the victim's skull was crushed and cops found a cricket bat covererd in a lot of blood in the house. Pistorius probably beat his girlfriend to death with a bat and then shoots her to come up with such a ridiculous excuse.

Other media reports she was shot through the door, and the police are uncertain if the bat was used by Pistorius or his girlfriend to defend herself. I haven't read anything to suggest that she was killed by anything save the gun.

If Pistorius was roid user ( and not only him) during the Olympics the labs that didn't detect the drugs allowed someone capable to commit murder to walk free around. And the "doctors" that advised him to take this stuff are equally responsible too.

If I was the judge in this case, and the defense came up with such a claim, I would ask penalties for these people too.

You've got a point about the doping docs and similar, assuming it's Roid rage not simply psychopath rage, but the labs are subject to the rules for what constitutes a positive, so unless he tested positive and they let him go they're not responsible. Also judges don't just get to assign penalties to people who aren't charged in the case. The prosecution has to charge them and then a judge/jury can convict them.

While it's never wise to draw general policy conclusions from single cases the evidence so far is she was murdered by a firearm, and she clearly have a much better chance of surviving a baseball bat, because baseball bats are less lethal, can't penetrate bathroom doors nearly as well as guns and you have a chance of outrunning maniacs with baseball bats (depending on how good prosthetics are for obstacle running obviously).

In a possible doper's defence, they tend to show up to races "clean". Read Tyler's book about glowing. The roids are for off-racing times, away from testers typically.
Europeans just loooove to go to South Africa to train, the outstanding facilities and safe environment. Really, they do. Guess how many ever get tested during their stay.

At this point there's really no evidence that this was roid rage, and the only person we know to have a responsibility for the shooting is the "so promising man". Even if it is roid rage I have no sympathy for him, he made his choices.

His spin and PR team could try and come up with a defence that he was not in his right frame of mind due to steroids and try to garner some public sympathy that could influence the jury but its a (very) long shot.

It also discredits his athletic accomplishments but in this case I don't think he would care about that.

Of course not. First time attempted doping. Never positive. Didn't know the effects.
That he still lives himself says more about him than the way he slaughtered her. Even the most pitiful of human beings rid the world of their presence after such a deed.
