Great, chaotic sprint. Bol showed some top notch speed to beat Pedersen who was navigated and delivered perfectly by Stuyven.

Assume Demare must have been caught up in that crash and gapped there. Bennett probably caught in it too considering he was so far back.

Pedersen started his sprint too late, but was obviously not fast enough anyway. Maybe he can take the yellow jersey tomorrow.

With this course today, it almost feels as if the riders were lucky just to have a handful of crashes instead of full-scale Armageddon.

Best win of Bol’s career. He’s had a lot of support from DSM with limited returns so it must feel great to produce the goods at a big race. He looked plenty fast there. It was interesting to see him winning a drag race with Pedersen.

Bennett was coming like a rocket from way way back, but of course that’s exaggerated by the effect of sprinting in slipstreams. i hope Ackermann’s ok. He and Demare continue the wait for their first wins...

Quickstep were too far back before the crash considering how twisty the final km was - overconfident maybe. Bennett was behind Bora when they went down but able to get by on the inside (losing at most a bike length or two) whereas Demare was on the outside and had no chance

Matthews heartwarmingly congratulating Bol was nice to see, considering how Bol basically was the reason for Matthews getting such a ridiculous schedule last season, which was part of what let him to leave Sunweb. Nothing personal between the two, obviously.

It will be interesting to compare tomorrows ITT results with the results from the UAE Tour ITT. The one in UAE was 13km and completely flat. Tomorrow we'll have 14km flat, but with a small bump in the beginning. Bissegger will be the reference point. He was second in UAE, 14s behind Ganna and 10s ahead of Pogačar. We can use also LLS as reference, he was 5th in UAE at 30s behind Ganna.

Bisseger, Kragh Andersen, Dennis, Campenaerts, Cavagna. Will be really interesting to see the battle for the stage win. And to see how close can Roglič be to this powerful ITT machines for the short and mostly flat stuff.

I would throw Pedersen and Matthews into the mix.
I would throw them out again. Bling needs a prologue-short and technical time trial, and Mads would also be better in a TT with more stop-and-go elements on the route. Seems to be a real Bert Grabsch-time trial, this one. Both guys will go for it, though, but a top20 is more likely than a top5.

Not really, no. Today's time trial has two short climbs and lots of corners, so in general way too many changes of speed for someone like Grabsch to excel. It's more one for a punchy type of time trialist. Pretty much perfect for Bissegger

His best ITTs has been on the San Benedetto del Tronto course.
