But the posts that I have made in the Race Design Thread where the locations have meant that I have delved into US foreign policy when discussing them - which is what I was referring to there as they form part of the reason I was being perceived as hating the US - have largely been about that part of the world.

I understand

I really don't want to wade into the medal count discussion, but IMO it would be weird for the reporting in each country not to focus on their overall medal count along with the number of each medal.

Unchained, I don't know the numbers in other countries, but in the USA ~300,000,000 are not part of the active pool, let alone the elite athlete pool. ;)

Until they put gravel biking in the Olympics, I can't be bothered to care about it that much. <chuckles audibly>

EDIT: I am excited that CX and cross country running will likely be in the 2030 Olympics.

From 1896. Recent history (since 1996) I think you will find Australia ranks much higher.

If BMX can be be an Olympic sport then why not. Mind you BMX has totally transformed since the early 80s when it evolved. Techniques, bikes and even the tracks (eg synthetic). Becoming an Olympic sport and the resulting funding and sports science that comes with that is likely why BMX transformed.

Also, Albano Celentano hangig out with Snoop Dog while watching Judo was certainly one of the moments of the Olympics so far.

I'm catching some rowing right now, the word repechage cracks me up to no end. Think they use it in fencing also, so each time a commentator says repechage mirth will be had! :tearsofjoy:

Watching the 1500m heats on the track now. Commentator just said that there will be a repechage! Never heard of that before in athletics.

Real Olympics starting today: athletics!

Same question every Olympics: Will Flo-Jo and Bolt's 100 m stand?
Same answer every Olympics: Yes

The Flo Jo record is a farce and should never have been ratified. The record occurred in a day where the wind assistance was 3 to 5, yet, miraclously the wind speed device measured 0 for two races, one which was Flo Jo's.

I know it was a farce. She was still dominating at the Olympics later in 1988 though and then disappeared. I wonder why! Her running style was absolutely beautiful at that time, she was just floating with immense power.

Australia is a sports loving country and we know we are small so we love to beat the big guys. After hosting the 1956 Olympics Australia became complacent about results and sports funding didn't keep up with the rest of the world. In 1976 Australia hit a low ebb - the public demanded better. The Australian government then set up the Australian Institute of sport. From 1980 onwards Australia's Olympic results steadily improved. Australia do pretty well in cycling too for a country on the other side of the planet. Phil Anderson was a pioneer.

The British also showed what proper funding a model could achieve when they set up their lottery after London was awarded the 2012 Olympics.
I have to say the last Olympics I truly enjoyed were the 2000 Sydney Olympics, part of it was definitely the crowd because you could tell they were totally into sport. And I still remember how the Aussie and US male swimmers were razzing each other (Ian Thorpe was my fave swimmer back then), it was just too much fun!

(And then the BALCO scandal happened and that was temporarily it for me as far as enjoying watching some sports. But that's a story for the Clinic.)

I was thinking I'd like to have a go at the trampoline. But then the Chinese girl whacked her head off the edge and I'm having second thoughts about it.

Okay, tripple jump is a sport I never really got the hang of.
Think when I tried it, it was more like... three rather long steps.

And also... aren't they getting sand... unfortunate places?

Everyone just jumping straight into the finale!

Let's talk handball and music, too. If I hear that techno version of Nik Kershaw's The Riddle one more time during a match, I might go insane (more than I already am).
What's that sport where they jump, dance and run with a big ribbon on a stick? I could have easily won gold in that but nobody sells body suits in my size and I don't see those stick ribbons for sale, so how am I supposed to practice

Decathletes doing their thang on the high jump - respect!

Also, 4x400 mixed relay on tap, just the heats though...

I have to say I rather like the violet track (I wouldn't call it purple), with the green field in the center it looks rather lovely.
