almost nothing speaks for him, tbh. His record in Roubaix is as poor as it can get, his shape questionable, and the temperatures too warm.

Sure he may stand a chance, if he gets into the right move, same as every quick rider who is somewhat skillful on the cobbles - but man vs man, I wouldn't even see him as one of the 10 best for Roubaix.
How is Pedersen shape questionable? He was flying in Sarthe until that crash in the last stage. Top10 in Sanremo, Gent and Ronde. His shape is actually as good as it has ever been in spring.

for me it's questionable, because I see it more the other way around: in none of the classics so far this year he was good enough to compete for the win.

Maybe he found the missing bit in Circuit de la Sarthe, but against this competition it's impossible to say. Cosnefroy is a completely different kind of rider, and most others two levels below them.

Edit: maybe "not 10 best" was still a bit harsh, especially as many others have even more questionmarks, like van Aert, Lampaert, Senechal, Degenkolb, Politt, Stybar and so on. But normally I'd rate them all higher than him, yes. Additional to guys like van der Poel, Küng, maybe van Avermaet.

I was really wondering what would happen now that rim depth,tire diameter and the pesky problem of fitting a long brake caliper have all but been eliminated from disc use..same w a larger fork width and tire clearance on the top and sides. I also thought we would see more cushioned hubs now that everything is done w discs..
don't know who to pick..lots of riders w great form..lots of top roadies were just the top cyclocrossers a few months ago..because I am not racing,I am praying for sloppy conditions for at least part of the race..hope to be yelling "Woooot" lots in our house

Sloppy conditions? Have you seen the weather reports? The best we can hope for is dust.

Interesting Strade is consistently one of the lowest other than LBl and Lombardia on the list.
Is it really that surprising though. Landing somewhere in between the hilly classics and the cobbles classics is exactly what I would have expected. Looking back, in the last 5 years there has always been at least one guy who I consider a climber and one guy who I consider a cobbles specialist on the Strade podium, which is honestly crazy. Pretty incredible just how balanced the route is.

Weird that winners of AGR, and to a lesser extent Strade and LBL, tend to be considerably heavier than others who do very well in those events.

Probably just shows that it is too small a sample to be very useful statistically.
I noticed that too and I thought one reason might be that good sprinters tend to be heavier than an average climber. That means if the race is decided in a sprint between a light and a heavy guy, both end in the Top 3 but the heavier rider might be more likely to win.

That said, the sample size is probably indeed too small to make any good conclusions.

Best day of the year as a cycling fan!

My favorites:

:wineglass::wineglass::wineglass::wineglass::wineglass: Van der Poel
:wineglass::wineglass::wineglass::wineglass: Pedersen, Van Aert
:wineglass::wineglass::wineglass: Laporte, Küng, Asgreen
:wineglass::wineglass: Ganna, Van Baarle, Kristoff, Lampaert
:wineglass: Senechal, Mohoric, Matthews, Turner, Politt
Unless Wout lost less form from illness than I suspect, there's no 4 star candidate for me with Wout coming into the season too hot to start with anyway. No illness and regular date he's 5 though.

Meanwhile Van der Poel seems to be getting his form right, at the right time. Otherwise, good list

Well in the last 5 years both WvA and VDP won Strade so the weight is high..
And VDP won AGR.

Pedersen, MVP and Küng are my top favourites.
JV have a well balanced team and should send someone like Affini on the attack at some point instead of pulling the bunch early on. On this kind of terrain he can do something.
I'm also liking Quickstep's team for this race more than for the other cobbled races. Steimle, Ballerini and Sene are all more Roubaix riders.
