There's an interview with Paul Sherwen out there from 2009 where he explicitly announces Froome as a future GT winner and I think (must check) he even says Froome has a "big engine".

no doubt he did.

anyway, can't be bothered to look for link. but the interview exists. Maybe Sherwen knew a thing or two about Froome's 'dedication'. Or he was just bluffing and showing his RSA colors.

("Who? Chris Froome? The fat dude? Whahuahahahuahauaha", Brailsford is rumored to have said in response to Paul's statements...)

I did not doubt you sniper, i was just making a joke on Sherwen's mine back in Africa.

Stuey mate also said Luke Durbridge has GT future also.

copy that!
(my "anyway..." was in anticipation of others asking for a link, which i could provide if necessary but too lazy atm)

And durbridge is only 24.
plenty of time to transform.

btw, has Paul responded to the news of Martin joining Lefevere's clean team?

PEZ: If they don’t land Bradley Wiggins, do they have anyone who can go top ten, top five at the Tour?
Paul: That’s the big question…hmmm…If you take out Brad Wiggins, the only other guy that you could put in as a hopeful is Chris Froome. I like to refer to Chris as a Kenyan although he’s now British! He was brought up in Nairobi, so I refer to him as one of the neighbours from just down the road!

Hopeful for a top ten/five ...

Cheers, gunghogun.

I see I was exaggerating a bit, no "future GT winner" and no "big engine". Still, baffling.

but sniper Brailsford was bullish circa 2008. When vroom needed to access the maternal lineage passport, and he was getting tested by BritishCycling. Brailsford obviously saw ergo numbers and results that he thought could win him the tour.

And when I said obviously***, may i in retrospect add a few asterisks*** to that obviously***

because Brailsford lies. No doubt, the test must have been pretty good. But Brailsford could have been having a lend of us with hyperbole.

That's meaningless though because it's Paul Sherwen who has always been a close friend of froomes by virtue of them both being from rsa and both speaking Swahili.

Sherwen is just hyping up a close friend. It's not like p and s know much about cycling anyway.

Don't want to let facts spoil a good story but Sherwen is from Widnes, not RSA. Maybe you are confusing RSA and Uganda, where Sherwen lives now. Don't think Froome was from Uganda, was he.

I disagree with your opinion on Sherwen. I think he is very knowledgeable, but if you expect him to comment on doping then forget it. That isn't his job.

Would you expect Grant Nisbett to drone on about doping in rugby?

Whatever the country specifics, there is an African connection.

Without meaning to be rude, so what?

That is about as relevant as implying there is an immutable connection between Greg Henderson and Donald Trump because they both speak English.

It is relevant because I remember in the 2012 TDF Ligget saying that Froome and Sherwen are close and always talking to eachother in Swahili.

Sherwen grew up in Kenya, competed in national sport there and speaks Swahili, then represented GB. Froome grew up in Kenya, competed in national sport there and speaks Swahili, then represented GB. Yep. No connection at all.

Sherwen was quite clearly hyping up his boy and nothing more.

I deliberately said RSA not Kenya to see if anyone would be superpedantic and try to correct that even though the overall point would remain.

That's a bizarre thing to do. Why not just say 'Sherwen grew up in Kenya'?

I've checked. Sherwen was back in UK at 14. I've just read another article where he says he likes being the only commentator able to interview Froome in Swahili. But that is about it. There is no mention of Froome investing in Sherwens's gold mine ;)

If, as a self-proclaimed investigative journalist, that is the limit of what Kimmage is able to bring to the table then Kimmage will doubtless be unaware of the irony

Got a link to where Kimmage claims to be a 'Investigative journalist'.

I think he is up there with the best of sports journalists, but dont remember the self-proclaimation of 'investigative journalist'!

Re: Paul Kimmage - Hero

I remember a quote about half of Austin Texas hating Armstrong, the other half had yet to meet Lance...

Wiggins once made a photographer wait 2 days to give him 10minutes to get a picture and then left before giving him the agreed 10 minutes. Very easy to hate on Wiggins.

It was Wiggins(according to Darth Brailsford) who pulled the plug on Kimmage being embedded with TeamSky at 2011 TdF. Kimmage is, imo, entitled to give some back.

@del1962 wendby_bot is clearly a despiser of Kimmage. Pretty sure this is not the first time he has had a go at Kimmage here.

Is he?

He has a reputation for being abrasive and rude. That's not a very intelligent approach if you want to get people to lower their defences....or even get through the door in the first place. He made a fool of himself over the whole Sky thing. Not clever for an investigative journalist ;)
