Gerry Ryan (owner of jayco) has said this evening on the 6pm bulletin of nine news that he wis aiming to have an australian team in the tour de france by 2012. Gerry Ryan is a proper businessman who will do a proper job.
You know, making statements like that makes me think someone else is just not getting it.
If you are serious about getting a proper team together and you don't have 2 Schlecks or the global face of cycling on the roster, please say you are aiming for PT status in, say, 4 years, and are aiming for a GT in maybe 2 or 3. TdF in 4. Then get sponsors who back this sort of long-term vision. Put results on the board that get you a PT license in 3 and some additional sponsors that are persuaded on real merit.
And make riders sign contracts for a team that can actually deliver what it promises.
Call me old-fashioned, but these things should be earned.
Folk coming in and saying that next year they are gonna get a team that will get them straight into the TdF..... go home and plug yourself into planet earth before you send 5000 volts through the PR machine.
It also helps if you want to come onto a global stage and don't be laughed at and taken the **** out from the word go. An Ozzie team that presents reasonable ambitions would be welcomed by many. Inflated egos get the welcome they deserve.
It is making me appreciate teams like Vacansoleil and Team SpiderTech all the more. Well done fellows.
BTW, I would be dead curious to know what some of the managers were telling their riders what they had netted for them when they signed for CW. If they hadn't informed their riders what risk they were taking, it isn't just CW who should be sent out into the lane after spending 20 minutes with some feathers and a generous helping of tar.
