I liked it the other day when they were trying to insist that van Hummel came 4th despite his chain having snapped at about 200 metres out.

Was quite nice at the start of today not having Phil and Paul as the commentators.

Oh wait, you mean Paul and Phil are doing commentary for ITV4?! Ooops, I should've looked this up first...

In addition to their constant mistakes what I find truly irritating is they act/talk as if Evans and Wiggins are the only guys in the fight here. Granted they are the top favs but geez at least acknowledge the others are staying with them and making moves!

you have to remember they are commentating for 3 tv channels. One in Aus, one in the uk, and one in the US so they are basically playing to the audience that they have by only really talking about the anglophones in the race.

Within two minutes Phil identified Taaramae as Van Garderen and then said Kessikoff was one of the oldest riders at age 32.

And then they both confuse Van den Broeck with Vandendert.

It's sad because the blissful ignorance of growing up with them has been washed away.

Ya gotta admit that Paul does well on the French history before Phil makes an error on another finish. Still I think their enthusiasm overcomes the errors.

Paul is reading off the media guide when he speaks about French towns.

So what about "nobody knows who is Cadel Evans" days before he won the Tour?

playing to the audience in Aus?

Phil in the closing Ks of stage:

"Chris Horner is there!"

Like it's a surprise he go's well on the very steep stuff and his style stands out like a sore thumb.

Sorry Phil, big Horner fan.

Yes I saw that - I think he got van Hummel and Goss mixed up.

Ligget was on fire Sat nite - he gets really confused with OGE and LB are lining up for the final sprint, he keeps saying Green Edge and Greipel in the wrong bloody phrases - "the boys are lining up for team Greip, I mean Green Edge, I mean Andre Greipel " he is trying to fire up 200 word in a 5 second burst.

I think he prefers correcting Sherwen about his facts more than anything else..

Stick to your Avanti commercials Phil ol son...

Hasn't anyone told Paul that when he says "recuperate" the word he is actually searching for is "recover"?

Patients in hospitals with dire medical conditions "recuperate". Tired cyclists looking to get their energy back after exerting themselves "recover".

I'm glad Paul is always there to let me know who was part of the HTC lead out for Mark Cavendish

I don't know why Matthew Goss is always referred to as Matty Goss and Matthew Harley Goss as well - that middle name s##ts me!

According to Phil, today's last climb was "14 percent, increasing to eleven".

Wiggan's muttonchops must be channeling Nigel Tufnel...

I think the name on his licence must include the middle name. Every time I see a rider profile on a team site or his name on a startlist, it includes the Harley. I think they're probably reading it off a list of race numbers.

See, this particular thing I don't really mind too much. I appreciate some of the other complaints about P&P (although I still like them, because they're kinda goofy, and I like goofy), but I don't really think it matters whether they're reading the info off a script or whether they actually know any of it themselves. I find the historical trivia about the towns and castles and chateaus and whatnot rather interesting, so I appreciate that whoever's in charge of the production puts them in (you'd think I would know, having been a production intern for Versus a few years back, but I'm nonetheless not entirely sure who's in charge of stuff like that).

Given the sheer number of towns, chateaus etc they ride by its simple impossible for them to memorise snippets about them all.

Plus they probably paid good money to be in the media guide, so the broadcasters better get it right.

I don't mind the little château bits, frankly a lot of cycling is about waiting for something to really happen, they have to fill in stuff somehow. What I mind is their p*sspoor commentary.

Plus isn't this really French television directing their camera to show chateaus? Many times this is to put graphic standings over top. RAI seems to do the same thing for the Giro.

Have to say I agree with you. I watched some of yesterday's stage that I'd DVR'd and it was atrocious the commentary! Sooo many errors misidentifying riders, misspeaking, blathering, stumbling, argh like listening to a senile grandpa who still thinks he's all that. And not even cute/endearing - just pathetic and annoying, especially for someone like me who "grew-up" w/ P&P and Famous Cycling Videos race coverage many months after-the-fact. Retire!

harmon/kelly are miles better - if you can get eurosport

Yeah I'm going to have to get up early (for me lol) to watch Eurosport on the computer, b/c I can only DVR the atrocious NBC P&P coverage.

When watching the Giro though, I always tune-in online to the RAI...so wonderful...

Not keen on Harmon. Kelly endures his babal and sometime goes silent for minutes and minutes, but I always respect what Kelly has to say greatly. Silence speaks louder than words.

I like some ambient sound from the race more. I would be great if you had more of that. Of course if you have never raced, you might need the chatter to keep you interested.

Phil and Paul talking like Liqui was riding for Sagan to win on Stage 8.

The producers behind it all want the constant dribble?
