One that I find particularly funny, and there are numerous examples of this, from both Phil and Paul, any given day.

"(Cause of something happening) because (effect of something happening)."

Example (I don't remember this exactly being said, but it's highly like something that fits this pattern): Radioshack wants to protect the yellow jersey because they are chasing down the breakaway.

Seriously, both of them do this all the time, during every stage, several times every hour of every stage.

I found it strange how Paul was so adamant that Kittel was not ill, but was dangling off the back because of nerves.

He did make me giggle when he mentioned Sagan was born in Czechoslovakia, which was later split into Slovenia and Slovakia.

In their pre-race show, Phil explained that due to NBC's takeover, they expected the viewing audience to be much more general than in the past. Therefore, due to the audience's lack of bike race savvy, the announcers were going to focus more on the "people" aspects of the race. Essentially he admitted that they were going to dumb-down the coverage. I immediately began to look for an alternative way to watch the race and found great coverage from EuroSport from England. Sean Kelly and ?? are the commentators, and they gear their presentation to a knowledgeable bike racing audience. The only drawback is that I can't record it.

Believe me, I'm not taking up for P and P, but what we see and hear on NBC/Versus is not their best. I have a number of races on CDs that they announce, and they are completely different when they don't have the constraints of an American audience which they are paid to pamper. Actually, the NBC coverage hasn't been as horrible as I thought.

And they answer the question:

Do you feel you have to adjust your coverage and commentary to make it more understandable and appealing to the casual cyclist…or even people who don’t ride bicycles at all?

Phil Liggett:
Yeah, absolutely. American television producers are the world’s worst.........

Loved it on stage 1 when leading up till the final climb Lotto put a train on the front. Paul and Phil began to talk about setting it up for Greipel (who never had a snowballs chance in hell of staying in touch up the climb) only to eventually notice he was on the front grimacing in pain.
Amazingly they still did not put 2 and 2 together and Paul said something like "Greipel is going potty"

Magic stuff!

Context: final sprint, bit before 3km to go when BMC went to the front.

Paul was mentioning how people could no longer rely on the usual HTC train and that Cav use to win a lot for them. Then he decided to mention the various lables the team was known under. "Call them HTC, Columbia...F#@K call them whatever you want."

I had to ask the person I was watching with if I'd heard correctly. So out of cue and order for him. I'm guessing he's been tweeting whilst commentating or had some producer acting like a ******, aka, he was peeved and it came through in his commentary. He very quickly sounded flustered. Someone must have been pestering him.

Phil: After the crash where Farrar and Sivtov go down, Lotto goes to the front. "Lotto are probably hoping that Greipel can get to the end of the climb and win the sprint. Or maybe not."

What a goofball

well today marked the first "cat amongst the pigeons" metaphor if that is what you call it. Paul pulled it out and then Plil repeated it like it was ever so fresh

pull his string and 1 of 13 phrases come out at random

so Paul. you've used it now along with the also redundant and ever so tired "man possessed". it's documented here. I challenge you to NOT use them again

still available though is the ever so charming and cute "heads of state" "oooo lala. elastic snapped. they are are going backward.......

that may be true in theory but they still use their trite canned phrases they use every race every year every stage.

nice. I had the pleasure of meeting Phil about some years ago at interbike. he gave me 20 minutes of his day in just pleasant small talk about cycling. True gentleman. Turns out he lives not to far from my wife's home county and rides up on the Dales there still. He didnt have to spend that time with us and I respect him for it. He was genuinely interested in us as real British folk can be.

I should chill on the guy I guess

These threads crack me up, especially when other "informative coverage" in the states is wooden and about as engaging as constant anti-doping tirades. I'd like to see the two or three top cyclingnews forum contributors do better (as measured by NBC's performance measures, not yours)

P&p&b

We like Phil! He speaks naturally, with levity and his gaffs humor us.

Paul is awful: boring, repetitive, stating the obvious over and over, everyday, the same thing, speaking French as often as possible, he adores himself.

Bob used to be comical and fresh but now, when commentating, he repeats what has already been said and sounds unnaturally scripted in a story telling way.

There was 1/2hr Daily recap coverage on ESPN starting in 1989, I have it all on tape :) That coverage continued until Versus took over in around 2002? with Daily full live coverage.

Phil, Paul and Bob were once a treat, but they are all past their due date IMO. They weren't to awful today, but by the time week 3 rolls around I'll be muting them LOL :)

hehe - past their due date! That's good. This may be why they brought Scott Moninger in - to help appease us more experienced cyclists. Phil and Paul DO broadcast to several countries, and they DO have to dumb-down the broadcast for inexperienced audiences.

I can get Sean Kelly on Eurosport (but only on my pc). If I really wanted to, I could set up MythTV and skip the cable NBC broadcast entirely. But, I am too lazy - other things are more important.

its like that said:
Two of the worst commentators going around in ay sport. Happy to just have it on mute
Harmon is far worse. It is bad enough that all he is interesting in is discussing his beloved Sky and his great buddies Cav and Brad, but then he started today to discredit other teams in the peleton for being selfish - Movistar and Europcar.

Perhaps Harmon should have his own thread as well, or a Eurosport thread maybe.

Harmon was much better before Sky came around, or certainly before Wiggo became a legitimate GC contender.
