You know what is sad ....

I just found today, some pictures of Phil Liggett with my two daughters, they both has smiles on their faces a mile wide at meeting Phil.

Also a picture of Phil and his wife, with my wife.

Picture of my wife and kids with Armstrong, Axel and Phil.

All of this, years ago.

Everyone smiling. I hate the thought of telling my kids that Phil ( who they liked) has the proverbial feet of clay.

I feel your pain.

I have similar pictures and memories. My son hero-worshiped at least one cyclist he met who is now banned for life, tested positive or otherwise implicated in a major (ahem) doping scandal.

The killer was watching him watch Floyd miraculously consume 70 water bottles on Stage 17.

Nice.

The parent:child conversation was enlightening.

Shortly after the news broke about McQuaid's 'worst of possibilities'

Parent: "We should talk about Floyd."

Child: "He cheated"

Parent: "Oh! Yes, uhm, yes you are right." (phew)

Dave.

Why did so many of the US riders decide not to enter into selection for the Olympics? Phil said either paid off or given promises of no action for their own personal doping infractions. Sounds quite reasonable to me. Did Vaughters, Hincapie, etc get deals in exchange for talking about Armstrong? Why does Hincapie get off in all of this. There is no chance that he was clean for 17 tours if Lance was the mastermind king-pin of an international doping conspiracy.

What bothers me the most is his entire transformation since the lance worship begun and his lack of character to address this matter with responsability, well knowing how delicate is the current situation to the public he comunicates to.
This latest disgraceful opinion of his to me is not only an insult to common sense of gigantic proportion but also a self affirmation of how brain washed & manipulated he's become to even throw away the remaining bits of his career to accompany Lance in free fall....
Pathetic & sad indeed- I still have this memory of him commentating in the 80's when he was liked & respected.....

I still remember how much these OLN/Versus guys bashed riders who have failed drug tests, most notably at the TDF, guys like Sinkewitz, Ricco, Vinokurouv, Rasmussen (yes, I know he didn't fail a test, but you get it...), etc. I also remember Liggett being very supportive of Landis in the aftermath of the 2006 debacle and how the French and their labs are liars, haven't proven anything, are jealous, etc...Has he said anything about Landis since then? Look at him now, driving the Omerta bus and pointing fingers at anyone who dares touch or even talk about Armstrong. Sorry Phil, but you need to shut your mouth and stop being such an idiot.

I should make it quite clear. I have no business interests with Lance Armstrong as reported on http://cyclingnews.com . Please retract

Phil Liggett‏@PhilLiggett

Also, my last conversation or sighting of LA is more than 15 months ago.

Outside magazine on Phil and Paul:

One of the saddest sights of this new era, in fact, is the increasingly deep denial of NBC commentators Phil Liggett and Paul Sherwen, who are both friends of Armstrong and far richer because of his popularity.

Ol' Liggett is taking fire from all sides.

I am utterly amazed at the number of posters who suddenly have inside information of Phil and his motives and are willing to publically, albeit anonymously, impune his character.

Anyone who thinks LA is not the center of a witch hunt need look no further than this thread to see what happens when someoen disgrees with the witch hunt.

I am thoroughly sickened by what I see here, and here:

http://www.cyclingnews.com/features/the-united-states-of-omerta

Not just individuals, but entire nations will be smeared ... and we'll call it justice. Peopoe who have dedicated their lives to cycling, actually doing something, will be subjected to horrific smear campaigns ... the exact same behavior that the Lance Haters supposedly accuse him of?

This entire thread is shameful. Fortunately, as a historian, I know that most emotional nonsense, from McCarthyism to the Cultural Revolution, eventually rus its course - and those who have engaged in the black balling and public recrimination will be left with only their shame.

Rarely, throughout this thread is there anything that so much as addresses Phil's points or concerns, just one blatant smear after another.

Bullying at its finest.

LOL. Back off, man. I'm a historian.

As a historian, you should be able to draw proper parallels with the past. You are not the lone voice in the wilderness standing up against McCarthyism. You are one of the fools who clicked his heels together and goose stepped through the countryside, parroting McCarthy's lies and paranoia, smearing everyone who raised questions about your delusions. If you want a textbook case of how someone can be deceived into following a cynical demogogue, you only have to look at yourself.

liggett has been with the sport for too long NOT to perfectly understand that armstrong doped his way.

i could understand him denying the obvious as long as armstrong was riding high...

but now, when the chips are flying, to spout the nonsense he does, is simply morally and ethically low class fit a paid apologist, not the man who is the voice of cycling for millions.

me ? i stopped watching ANY race he commentated more that 10 years ago. being multilingual gave me the opportunity to get away from his nauseating armstrong adulation in english broadcasts...

now i lost whatever respect i still had for him.

Ligget has not only been a commentator, he has also been a tour organizor and promoter with long standing ties to Pat McQuaid. Think back to how chummy Phil was with Pat back in the days of the old Nissan Classic in Ireland. Phil is one of the sport's most connecyed insiders and has been for years.

Anyone know of any related comments by Paul Sherwin?

He retweeted both of Phil Ligget's tweets re: no business ties with LA and not seen him for 15 months. Both of which are pretty much debunked unless LA relinquished his interest in the gold mine in the last 5 years.

Gold mine in Uganda. That sounds like the perfect front for smugling minerals from neighbouring Congo and exporting them as "Ugandan" minerals.

Doping and covering stuff up is one thing, but making money off of civil war and ethnic cleansing is on a whole other level.

Well Liggett denied it, so either he is lying again, or they have some elaborate company ownership structure that is hidden from the public.

It gets even better than that.

http://articles.cnn.com/2010-10-28/world/uganda.gold_1_uganda-kampala-gold-mining?_s=PM:WORLD
Yuri Bogoroditsky is the managing director of Victoria Gold Star, owners of the first ever gold refinery in Uganda. He says he wants to make Uganda a legitimate player in the gold industry -- buying the raw material, refining it, and exporting the finished product -- all from his Kampala refinery.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paul_Sherwen
Sherwen lives in Kampala, Uganda where he has interests in a gold mine, commuting between Uganda and the United States regularly.[3]

Bogoroditsky and his investors chose Uganda's capital city because of its relative stability and its proximity to vast gold resources in nearby countries like Tanzania, Kenya and the Congo.
