I have read the discussions on these forums for a while but have kept quiet.

I must say I think the anti-Cavendish comments are getting ridiculous. Okay, he is brash and I can see why people dislike his attitude.

However, I would like to make the following points:
- he is not the first rider to been at fault for a crash
- it was not intentional
- he was not the only one at fault, Haussler also drifted towards the right!

I think the actions of other riders protesting is pathetic, and they are targeting the man and not the incident.
They were targeting the man, mainly due to his behaviour, you do not spit on the ground in front of those who critize you, especially if this criticism can be perceived as valid

Reading McEwen statements it seems that the protest was not solely concerned with the sprint itself, but just as much or even more about the spitting incident

where was Robbie McEwan when ekimov was spitting at Simeoni.....silence!

Robbie McE should look at his past before starting to have a go at younger pros...not too many sprinters like Cavendish cause young and winning lots and making it look easy....

McE should talk with his sprinting...oh yeah he cant anymore can he....

this is getting boring now...can someone go through youtube and find some serious sprinting not what we all saw yesterday...

gonna repeat it again...not a fan of Cavendish but riders and posters seem to way OTT on this one...

If the protest was about spitting, then fair enough. But was it definitely about the spitting incident? Did Cavendish spit at their questioning?

Who knows?

However people on this forum have been criticising him for a longtime and yesterday give them another opportunity to criticise (before the spitting incident). Is that fair?

This incident is blown out of proportion from an ACCIDENT!

Yeah, I really liked that little tidbit. Mainly because I believe Greipel should get the Tour spot this year as he showed that he has done more this year than Cav, who still isn't on form

Greipel had his chance to shine in the Giro and flopped

Well at least he managed to beat Farrar's lead out guy here which is more than he managed on a previous stage ;)

I really don't want to start with that again, but your tactics are ridiculous. Cav doesn't deliver anything and so your only option is to attack Greipel. Cavendish does the same, because he feels the pressure.
Can't you just accept that Greipel has done a lot of better this year then Cavendish? A fit Greipel delivers. He has beaten nearly every top sprinter in the last 12 months (Farrar, Boonen, Freire, Mcewen, Peta...) apart from Cavendish, who apparently doesn't want to ride with/against Greipel.

I don't say that Cavendish doesn't deserve a spot in the Tour, but this Greipel bashing sucks. That just shows the lack of respect.

Sprinters! lol :)

here is my insight..

Sprinters! tsk.

My insight is that this would be much easier to avoid if they wouldn't put flat stages in races. They ruin everything.

Received a bit of clarification from McEwen... seems the riders said Cavendish didn't just spit, he spit on Haussler after being blamed. Not sure as he didn't witness it himself, but I suppose that is what triggered the protest, not so much the massive get off. Adrenaline aside, seems like Cav could do with a bit of anger management training if that's true.

If he spit on Haussler, then he's even more of a giant douchebag than I thought he was. And that's saying something.

Can't argue with that

Seriously, Greipel is obviously pretty fast at his best as he showed in last year's Vuelta and being the 2nd best sprinter at High Road is not to be scoffed at considering they also have Eisel, Goss, Renshaw etc

Anyway this is thread hijacking so I'll let everyone get back to the seething about the gobby one

What I don't get is, if Cav spat on Haussler, why didn't Haussler deck him?!

He was too busy being in agony?

Nothing is ever Frodo's fault though is it. Whenever anything goes wrong someone else is to blame.

Frodo needs to man up and apologise - his reckless riding has sent one rider to the hospital with a broken hip - and that is entirely the fault of Frodo.

I agree but to hold a mass protest is weak. Let individuals speak their mind and get on with racing. Cav can be a tubesteak but he's not doing anything Robby M and the others haven't done for decades.

This is where the retribution happens on the road. Cav needs to find the ditch with some help. Spitting alone deserves immediate physical response.

but its still hearsay. there is a big concerted effort by other riders, fans AND the press to vilify cav, hes had a pretty bad 9 months - brother in jail, split up with long term fiance, health problems, and this week his grandmother died. i get the impression a lot in the sport want rid of him. hes someone who has really got interest of cycling up in the uk, he speaks his mind against doping (still very little do-hes villified for this yet omerta still exists) and hes an excellent sprinter. i find it genuinely sad that someone as a british cycling fan that someone who i can get behind is being villified-yes hes made mistakes but they dont warrant the abuse hes receiving
