5th at the Olympics. Not bad for his farewell race.
Ending as the wheelsucker he always was.

I know he only has 1 weapon, 1 talent... But that's because he is weak. Always complaining, never pulling and rarely delivering.

Hater. That's absolutely ******.

In the team the plan was to work for Purito in the final. Bala was not in good shape, so Purito shouldn't work on the flat.

At the end, he bridgep a gap of 40 seconds on the climb. That's a huge performance. It's completely logical after that kind of effort, you don't have something left in the final. And especially not on the flat, which for a rider of his build and characteristics is not a good terrain at all.

And he was not complaining at all during the race. And he delivers always. Always up there. How many riders can win a big race? Exactly, only 1.

Dont listen those kind of people. Purito ha been a brave rider. he won Cataluña with an attack at 100 Km to the end...and he had attacklot of times from far although his qualitis are better in the final. it is like to say than cavendis is a bad rider becoue he just wheelsuck till the lasy 100 m...

He didn't do a tactically good race but that's on Mínguez, really. Spain gave up the initiative and only worried about reacting. That can work (barely) at the Worlds, but not at the OR.

So that was his last race? He did a very good figure although it's easy to see that he's not on his previous level. I've never really been a fan of his, he's way too boring and predictable, but he has definitely been one of the best cyclist of this decade. And he seems like a very nice guy!

Adios Purito. I found myself cheering for you like mad in all your races, despite your (understandably) conservative GC racing style. A clearly warm and emotive personality overcame all that; a rider so good for so long deserved to win a bit more and a bit bigger. My excitement for Contador's Fuente De attack was tempered by my disappointment that your best chance at a GT slipped away; but really, the Florence Worlds encapsulated the greatness and disappoinments of your career, and the ups and downs of sport in general. You were proud of your high results without seeming complacently satisfied with them. Great attitude, great competitor.

Once it became apparent that Ireland had no chance for a gold, I was urging Purito on. He rode well, but he really needed to be on Nibali's wheel throughout.

A great career. I will miss him.

I feel the same. I liked a guy a lot. He seemed like a nice person in and off bike. His name will be for me always connected with these 3 words Fuente De, Florence, Valverde.

I want a Purito bobble head doll/action figure for my desk! He will be missed by me. He rode a great race to close out his career! What a personality!

From those who have no balls and/or tactical acumen, this guy was one of the best.
If someday there will be a TDF/whatever for seniors, I'll enjoy seeing him there.

Are you proposing legends invitational races? Do them for classics, every man for himself

Purito in his 2012/2013 form would have destroyed almost everyone in the last Vista Chinese climb.

I dont think so, it was a race for classic riders for 160 Km, wind, short climbs, cobbles, Purito would have got very tired before the first chinesa.

Anyway Purito has been good in Amtel, so who knows.

Purito has a big engine, despite his small size. The fact he's been a good 1 day racer proves that. He can sustain tough conditions quite well, allthough a lot of wind is not good for him.

I don't understand this. It was a hard race, but still he was able to close of gap of 40 seconds on the last time Vista Chinesa. In his 2012/2013 shape, he would have had the power to attack after he closed that gap. In his 2016 shape however, he had nothing left after closing the gap.

Purito had a big engine. He won races above 230 km.

This is a bit unfair towards Purito, he has still results to remember, e.g.: La Fleche Wallonne. It was always pleasure to me to watch his performances. The question is whether with stronger team or better DS he can achieve better results, but still he distinguished himself and retires as one of best riders of past years.

You are right but all those 3 races would have been bigger wins than his biggest win. Just a pity he didn't at least win one of them.
