So, what is it? Van Empel is no longer allowed to ride U23 World Cup? Not that it'd make a difference for her; she's already leading the Elite World Cup with like a million points, but it might make a difference for the lucky person who'll inherit her lead in the U23 World Cup.

No u23 world cup other than a jersey for the top u23 rider, so she'll still be elegible to wear that if she wasn't wearing the elite one. If it gets very very cold she might want to wear both!!

Doesn't the black background numbers a bunch of riders wear indicate that they're in the U23 World Cup? And if I'm not mistaken, Vas doesn't wear it, even though she's obviously young enough.

Fem on another level, I think along with Puck, Shirin and Kata Blanka they will bring ladies cyclo-cross up another level if they don't go to the road too much, though that seems likely with Van Anrooj already best U-23 road rider this year and Van Empel joining Jumbo.

Nice to see my favourite Alvarado back close to somewhere near her best again, don't think she would have matched Fem, but that mistake on 2nd last lap took any potential excitement away.

On the downside, sad to see Worst having to drop out when she was doing ok. Has been struggling recently and had her knee strapped today so hopefully will get that injury sorted.

Surprise of the race Sara Casasola in 5th, have to say I didn't know much about her, but neither did commentators or cameras, they spent more time on PFF. Another breakthrough Italian like Persico maybe.

Looking forward to hopefully seeing all the ladies back later in the season.

Watching Van Empel ride in the beginning of this season is like watching Vos or Van der Poel is their best years. She wins everything and the harder the better for her.

Alvarado was handling the technical parts incredibly well today and Ferrand Prevot with a good 7th place.
Yeah definitely getting peak mvdp vibes here

The only problem is that she's likely to win every race she enters, which doesn't make for exciting viewing. She seems like she easily has 20-30W over everyone else and there is no getting over that by the others. Men's races have been pretty exciting so far this year, we'll see how it goes when the "big three" join up again.

The UCI doesn't seem to be aware of a U23 women's world cup competition: https://www.ucicyclocrossworldcup.com/en/ranking

In which case the question is not so much why Vas is not wearing a black number this year (pic from Tabor last month), as why van Empel and Pieterse are.

Perhaps this explains it:
5.2.010 At the same time a UCI cyclo-cross ranking by nation shall be drawn up by totaling the points of the three first ranked riders of each nation, for the following categories:
  • men elite, with the three first men of 19 years and more;
  • women elite, with the three first women of 17 years and more;
  • men under 23, with the three first men of 19-22 years;
- women under 23, with the three first women of 19-22 years;
  • men junior, with the three first men of 17-18 years;
  • women junior, with the three first women of 17-18 years.

Vas knows that there will not be two other Hungarian U23 women at most events, so pointless to insist on a black number.

To be fair I don't think Vas or the others have a choice on the colour of the numbers. They could be printed Neon orange with pictures of elephants and spaceships in the background but they'd still have to wear it as that's the uci rules!;)

But isn't that exactly what they do? They can choose to not ride in the U23 rank (or Championships, as both Van Empel and Vas did yesterday), even though they're young enough to be U23. But from what I understand; once the decision to move up has been made, there's no turning back.

If Wout van Aert eventually starts racing cx this season, then even when Fem van Empel joins the team, no one will actually race in a team jersey. In fact they'll have the whole collection of national, continental and world champion.

Have I understood this correctly? Van Empel will start wearing Jumbo clothes (or rather, clothes with the Jumbo logo on, as you say; she won't actually be wearing ordinary Jumbo clothes) instantly from January 1st? Or are riders allowed to be employed by completely different organisations between Cross and Road, meaning that she could continue riding Cross as a Pauwels Sauzen rider?

It depends on the agreement between riders and teams. There are several different cases:
  • Roodhooft ladies all race road under Plantur-Pura but are split between Alpecin-Deceuninck, Crelan-Fristads and 777 on the road
  • Niels Vandeputte, Toon Vandebosch, Joran Wyseure and Emiel Verstrynge all race for Alpecin Development Team but on the cross the first two are with Alpecin - Deceuninck and the others race for Crelan - Fristads.
  • Quinten Hermans and Laurens Sweeck both had a contract until the end of december but while the first continues to ride with Tormans until there, Sweeck was allowed to leave the team earlier
  • Thibau Nys will join Trek-Segafredo next season but my understanding is that he will continue to wear Baloise-Trek kit whenever he races cross.

In a similar statistic, whenever Van der Poel comes back, it will be the first time he races on a regular team kit since january 2015.
