Are non-Europeans (thinking about Clara H.) allowed to race in European championships even though they are not eligible for the title/ jersey? I know that sounds weird but it used to be common to have foreign riders race in the US road Nats. Probably a different scenario though?
Also, it doesn’t look like Fem Van Empel is on the (current) start list for Namur?

European champs is the continental championships for Europe, so only riders from nations with a federation that is affiliated with the UEC (European Cycling Union) are able to compete. This is the same for pretty much all cycling disciplines with other continents having a similar competition if they decide to host one. This Friday (as it was a late change of host and is tagged onto another race) is the Panamerican championships from somewhere in Massachusetts that I can't remember. Whereas in the panam track champs riders will ride for the nation, as it's basically only Canada and the USA with the odd Mexican and Costa Rican (the original host of the Panams) they compete in trade team jerseys.

I'm only guessing as I'm not American, but I'd assume the Professional US road champs would probably only allow US riders due to UCI rules. Maybe the Elite, Cat 1, Cat 2, etc may allow them to race and aren't categorised or are categorised as they have residency there.

In terms of van Empel, she was on the provisional startsheet for the u23 race when I saw it on CX24 at the weekend, but on Wielerflits it gave the Dutch selection by the KNWU that she will ride the Elites.

US road championships: "Until 2006 the race was open to all nationalities, the first American to finish being named the winner and given a distinctive jersey. Since the championship in Greenville, South Carolina, in 2006, all riders have had to be American." I didn't realize it had changed. Tells you how closely I follow that race.
Thanks, I thought that’s what I remembered from what the US road Nats were held in Philly for several years—and folks from outside US ( at least one Italian) won the race.

Thanks, that’s what I figured. But as you see below there is precedent (in Nationals but maybe not Euros) for outsiders to race (but not be eligible for jersey) of a country’s NCs, which is why I asked.

PFP needs to find her a CX mechanic to set up her Shimano 2x system...that or switch to SRAM 1x.

To be honest, when I saw the photos on Monday of her bike, my first thought was Shimano 2x; she's been on Sram 1x for years. When there is a Shimano groupset with a 'clutch' system, why not use it? I'm not a fan of using pure road groupsets on CX bikes....
On that course a GRX 1x would have been far better.

As far as I'm concerned, unless it happens again in Namur, then it's a one off incident. There are multiple possibilites, like PFP not being familiar with Shimano, the mechanic not being familiar with Shimano as she might have a personal one and they have moved across with her from the Absalon team, the mechanic is used to Shimano and just had a mare of a day and unfortunately it was reflected through the problems, etc. The list is long with it probably being a mix of the bumpy field, the rider and the mechanic.

You know PFP will be expressing her displeasure about the mechanicals behind the scenes if everything isn't working properly. I don't think she is one to stay quiet if things aren't working as they should.
It's literally one race. She's moved to a new setup and from this and the other one about moving to sram 1x makes it sound like it's continued happening race after race after race. Of course she won't keep quite about it but right now it's more of an internal thing that'll be discussed after the race with those around her and is no doubt sorted. She's a professional and so are the people who work behind the scenes. There will always be gremlins in a new setup that need sorting out before it's optimum which is a good reason why she probably didn't come straight into cross at the Euros. Unfortunately these problems were easy to see as they happened in the race. If the problems happen again at Euros and a few other races, then there's something wrong whether it's the equipment or the user (rider or mechanic).

Although I think I still like more the old Namur course, let's see what the changes they made this year will look like.

I'm looking forward more to both U23 races than the elite ones. I'll be very surprised if Fem loses the Women's Elite races while Van der Haar looked super in the Koppenberg and is my pick for sunday.

Nys vs. Ronhaar vs. Michels and Pieterse vs. Shirin will be very good battles in the U23.

I agree, I prefered the older Namur course, some of the recent changes haven't made it better.

I think on that course, you'd think Pieterse would have too much technical prowess for Van Anrooij; in fact, as long as she makes a decent start, I think Burquier may get involved; Namur is the closest CX comes to a XC MTB course.

King of course reviews (and former junior world, european a dutch cx champ) Jens Dekker has posted images of a some course maps for races coming up. While the course for Beekse Bergen WC doesnt go into the Zoo (the riders won't have to watch out for Monkeys or Lions!) it does involve a bit of beach sand and some woodland. If it's anything like the videos on youtube from past Dutch nationals, it should be a good course.

Overijse has a new start finish with the long tarmac climb that ends in cobbles to the first pit being removed for a 500m 6% climb off road.

Possibly Lauren Molengraafs closest competitor in the Junior women's race tomorrow won't race after a crash in pre ride but hopefully Cat Ferguson can do something after a good ride on the Koppenberg.
