"wow... looking at the race for second - that would make for a great race for first... hm..."

"Do you intend to murder Mathieu van der Poel!?"

Wout taking out time from Mathieu...I guess your only solace is to pretend that Mathieu is out there just giving it 80%...you know, because that's how he always races...

I think the fanboy here is you. Between Wout and Mathieu, I honestly don't care who wins. But clearly Mathieu is a level above in cyclocross right now. Or two levels.
Look at the lap times. You can pretend anything you want, but if Wout had started beside Mathieu, he would still be challenging Mathieu. Sure, Mathieu almost certainly wins, but we would have had a race, rather than a procession.

Funny too, I didn't quote your post, but you yelped anyway. Methinks the lady doth protest too much.

Apparently Mathieu had a flat tire as well, according to Eurosport. I haven't seen it, but that could have accounted for his slight time loss. He's also just consolidating, not riding at maximum ability. That's just logical, why would he take unnecessary risk.

He races flat out every race. That is his nature. You think he is changing that in the most important race of the season? Poppycock.

Wout freaking crashed, clearly, and rode back from pretty close to last place.

Mathieu's first lap was much faster, he had the gap, and since then he's just been maintaining the gap. Isn't that obvious?

He's taking time out of Wout...and Wout is taking time out of everyone else. What seems obvious to some here, seems to be fanboy goggles, or hater goggles, doesn't really matter which...

Whatever the case, I am happy to see that Wout is clearly gaining form. I still think the spring is going to be a lot of disappointments for Wout fans, but there is a sliver of hope.
