Not even any more hype.

Armstrong was great. One of the greatest ever.

There was talk of Armstrong duking it out with Contador; remember all that hype?

Now there is no more Armstong / Contador hype.

For good reason.

So now the question is, even if Radio Shack makes it to the Tour, who will be their GC rider?

Greatest ever? At what? The Tour? Doping? Cheating? What? The guy is a total scumbag. American fans are total morons.

Watching him climb Howell Mtn. on Stage 2 gave me the impression he expected warmth, sun and an easier time. He was looking uncomfortable but sometimes trying too hard to go easy is worse than putting out some effort. Very hard to judge. Fabian was on cruise control and not stressed, or just looked like it. There isn't any reason for them to show serious form to their rivals this time of year.

I have it on good authority that FC, AS, and SO'G were drinking the entire Specialized sales department under the table every night of the TOC. They were on one last vacation before tightening up for the Tour, for what it's worth.

By definition doesn't greatest cyclist = greatest doper? (at least in the last 25 years or so)

Do you believe Indurain was clean? Pantani? Ulrich? Contador?

Heck, I'm still not sure how to view Lemond in terms of doping... and he is the rider that got me into cycling to begin with. I'm relatively sure he didn't board the EPO train... but that's different then saying he wasn't using something.

Yeah, Lance doped. I'm pretty sure most people here understood that prior to the Landis e-mails. What suprises me is how many people think it was somehow just him or that the Landis stuff invalidates what he did on the bike. He won by cheating... but he was beating a bunch of other cheaters by cheating... not a group of choirboys.

Let's not forget that if we took all of Lance's wins away... Jan Ulrich would recieve most of them. Yeah... there's a big improvement in the doping department.

No one is saying Lance was ever a bad cyclist, its just that he only ever did 1 race. You can't be considered a great in cycling if you just win 1 race.

He did have his fair share of decent placing in classics early on in his career but they arn't enough to put him anywhere near the greatest cyclist.

Why would they not be?

Second, why would a team that got would have had 4 guys in top 10 last year not have 1 this year? Atleast Leipheimer and Armstrong will make the top 10, Klöden and Horner also have a chance, depends on how much work they will have to do.

The reason RR won´t be in the top five is no TTT. I expect some will make the top ten, but that´s about it. Horner would probably do better than anyone if he is free to ride, but JB and Lance won´t allow that. Horner and the whole team will burn themselves out for Lance and come up empty.

I still suspect Lance may find a reason to abandon or not start (stomach problems, injury), once he realizes he has no chance.

Comon moose. If California was so easy why were the euros getting about crashing and getting dropped. canc and schleck havn't been drinkin they have been gettin beat by cali adverse weather and quality fields. Of course boonen and armstrong went down because they needed rest. The other riders who dropped out well it coulda been the henny or to rough a course, Come on bullwinkle these are pro cyclists not pro bloggers like me.

Here's the deal for all you kids; there are half a dozen clean domestic riders better than Lance that quit instead of taking the soup. Add to that US constituency, a possible equal amount in other countries and you realize that the best riders may not even have been racing. That changes things, doesn't it?

I was at the Eurosport cycling website the other day and noticed that Lance and Radio Shack have vanished. There's no mention of Planet Armstrong anywhere. I thought it might be just temporarily replaced by the French Open, but I found pretty much the same thing at Versus Cycling. Before, they pushed Bruyneel's blog about how great he is, and had Lance and RS were everywhere. Now there are two small mentions in advertisements, one by whatever beer sponsors Armstrong.

The same goes for Trek USA. The landing page doesn't mention Lance, or the Tour de France, or either of the pro teams. There's a photo of their new TT bike, but if you click that for details, you'll see a triathlete riding it.

People in the Clinic can go on about how nothing has changed and this will all blow over, but companies that use to be part of the lovefest seem to be removing all visible signs of a connection.

Whoever asked yesterday if Phinney was gonna be a stagiaire this year?

Great timing. The team announced today he's going to be.

Dear young Master Phinney:

You will have a lot of fun on Team Radio Shack. You'll get to do all the big races, like Sarthe, Algarve, the Criterium International, Castilla y Leon, and Romandie. Maybe someday you'll even work your way up to the biggest races on the calendar, the illustrious Tour of California and that other one somewhere in Europe.

But don't worry, you'll have fun playing UNO with Machado at the other races I've mentioned for the next few years. It'll be like one long sleepover!

Now, here is a cheat sheet listing your talking points. If you're ever in doubt, just say something negative about Lemond or Landis. Remember: whenever you do something amazing on a bike, be sure to contextualize it by noting that, if Mr. Armstrong were here (go ahead and just call him Lance, though), you would not have been the strongest on the day, and would have taken second place.

Well, Phinstrong--is it okay if we call you Phinstrong?--that about wraps up orientation. Let me know if you have any questions--and oh, wait, that's the adult table. Your seat is over here at the kid's table. You can sit next to Rosselerstrong. You can tell by his limited palmares this year that he still has a lot to learn, too. Maybe you can teach each other. Scoot over a bit so everyone can fit, Machastrong. Thanks.

You kids have fun now, and we'll let you know when we need a PR boost--I mean, a strong young cyclist to carry the standard of the sport into a new era of clean cycling. Or something.

Sincerely,
etc.

- Crashes happen in all bike racing.
- The parcours wasn't great, look at Big Bear stage.
- As I stated in a previous thread, Schleck was never going to go anywhere near the red in a race like California. he will go into his red maybe once or twice in the Tour de Suisse and that's it before the tour.

PS: Remember to cut off a testicle. When you suddenly make a tremendous and unexplainable performance gain, you can then retroactively blame it on the reduced aerodynamic drag and thus appease the fanboys.

I don't know why I bother but...do you seriously believe that an on-form Cancellara wouldn't have done better in the ITT and overall? You make it difficult to attach any credibility to anything you say with posts like that.

Fail........... http://www.trekbikes.com/us/en/

Definitely comes up with their Unity thing, "Lance is making the fight against cancer personal" Don't Lie man

Those daming emails released on the Radioshack website have now been pulled. Lance said they would be very interesting. But not interesting enough to leave on the website. Even the readers comments have been ereased to just 5 nice ones.

So what do we do if Armstrong wins the Tour? I now hope he does. It would just be the final piece in making cycling the most ridiculous sport in the world.

I wonder if the TDU will stump up 2 million again for Armstrong?

Another Radioshack fail: No Vuelta invite.

Apparently they didn't put LA on their list of potential Vuelta riders.

They're the only pro-tour team not to get a Vuelta invite.

I'm kind of surprised, really. Did the Vuelta do that out of spite because of no-show LA or is Leipheimer too much damaged goods? Kloeden and Brajkovic were on the shortlist.

I do not think Canc or Schleck were on form in the Tour of California. I think they both tried, as I have ridden the descent where Canc. went down and the last 20 miles were perfect for him to win, I was rooting for him.
Schleck tried at various times but was not on form.

Most Americans have no idea how the rest of the world drinks. And I am one of the biggest "we do it bigger and better" guys on the forum.

I consider this a vestige of our puritanical roots and it's nothing to be ashamed of.
