It could be the case that riding as a neo-pro you don't get podium opportunities? Quite unlike Froome, he's got some results that suggest he is WT/grand tour material and got them when he was younger.

The other side is Porte's months-long excellent results then nothing like the rest of Sky is warning enough to never personally believe the guy is cleans.

We need a book, or maybe an illness, to fill in his story a bit.

At Saxo, nope, the team rides for whoever has the legs on the day. He showed some spirit and moderate TT ability as a relatively old neo (coming from Triathlon), but nothing to suggest his outrageous exploits in the mountains since joining Team Clean.

His climbing skills were on vacation in 2011. Guy couldn't get over a speed bump without getting dropped.

Now, now. We must hold off on the chapeaus until we find out if Hog really has what it takes to be a professional cycling book writer - golf slacks and a sad-sack wardrobe. :D

His embedding within Garmin is already a given, so it shouldn't be long now!

it does seem sort of odd that, if we assume an innocent program,
we would assume that the riders would experience sickness and
lack of form and lack of results at different times. or does it?
I remember Froome using the term tightknit. They seem that way.

All true.

Was Porte always a GC contender? Best young rider with a 7th at the Giro in 2010 makes him at least plausible. His first WT squad being Saxo is a little disconcerting. We'll have to see if he did as much work in the wind tunnel testing his climbing attacks.

I don't know if it’s already been mentioned but he came there from an Italian amateur team run by Andrea Tafi, a man so high on EPO that he at one point dreamed of winning the Giro d’Italia.

Froome Madone 30:09, 459W @ 66kg

Porte Madone 30:24, 425W @ 61kg (estimate - or maybe just a tailwind?)

Deputy Dawg for the podium.

Scenarios:

Nibali wins with 2013 giro style to hold on in the mountains

Nibali blows and Porte matches Contador to win

Contador blows everyone out of the water

On the podium already and we are still not at La Planche. Tinkoff-Saxo will destroy Vince by Monday evening and then it's a shootout between Deputy Dawg and Bertie.

The tasmanian devil is just stretching. He's going to win stage 10 while barking.

Have to admit, at least he doesn't look at his power meter all the time. He can hardly look down.

Strong ride from Porte. I think there's more to come. He might just ride himself into a Froomesque form.

Get him into the wind tunnel to perfect his seated climbing sprints while spinning at 1 million rpm

Just hoping that little auld Richie will win the Tour so that the clinic will collapse in on itself and form a new dimension. .. surely he can't win the tour? Can he???

Saw him being interviewed after the stage at the team bus, he looked remarkably fresh.

Indeed not, and chances are this will be confirmed on Monday...you can bluff your way up for 1.8km, not for 5.8km.

You think Richie bluffed today and was close to collapsing? It didn't look like that at all but perhaps he's got as good a poker face as Quintana.

Deputy Dawg begs to differ and threatened to go coco up the longer cols when asked after today's stage.

I agree, Little Richie could be around for a while, I thought I'd miss the Froome show but Richie could serve up some real comedy gold.

I think Richie was on his limit and like Horner said today, everyone climbs well on the first mountain finish and then things get sorted. These guys have enough training and ability to go into the red/pain to be able to battle through 1.8km...5.8km on Monday and it's going to be a different story.
