I do love that pre 2012 he sucked bug time on mountain stages. I'm sure everyone knows how he faired, but I did some checking earlier on and found these efforts from 'Super Climber' Richie.

2010 Giro:

stage 14 @4'46 24th on stage and 2'21 down on Cunego, Mollema and Wiggins
stage 15 @5'46 18th on stage and 2'15 down on Dan Martin, 2'26 down on Pinotti
stage 16 @2'17 MTT 17th on stage. beaten by Tschopp, Dupont, Cunego
stage 19 @5'31 14th on stage. Finished with Pinotti,Kiserlovski, Kruijswijk, Samoilau and Mollema
stage 20 @ 1'42 19th on stage. Finished with Trofimov.

2011 Giro:

stage 5 @18'49 161st on stage. Beaten by many noted climbers like Ciolek, Russ Downing etc.
stage 6 @0'34 91st on stage. Richie got over the bumps!!!!!
stage 7 @15'09 133rd on stage. beaten by Lars Bak, Beppu to name 2
stage 9 @11'52 66th on stage. again beaten by guys he's now destroying
stage 11 @10'47 130th
stage 13 @15'50 87th
stage 14 @16'13 90th
stage 15 @39'59 137th
stage 16 @3'41 MTT 94th
stage 17@5'37 87th
stage 18 @12'16 90th
stage 19 @1'20 20th. Guess this is the stage Sky saw all the promise:D
stage 20 @26'51 66th. Bad pillow the night before!

2011 TdF:

stage 8 @1'23 58th
stage 9 @5'50 69th
stage 12 @17'25 67th
stage 13 @7'52 72nd
stage 14 @24'34 11th
stage 16 @9'59 81st
stage 17 @12'36 64th
stage 18 @33'44 80th
stage 19 @12'44 55th.

So from this I can see no reason why Porte couldn't become the 2nd or 3rd best climber in the world. I mean in 1 stage he finished 34 seconds behind the leaders.

On a stage that was a glorified sprint

tbf he wasnt at his best. And his climbing in 2010 was ok, quite good for someone in their first year on the road.

Still nothing pre sky suggested he would be the 2nd best climber on earth (by 2nd we mean the way Hinault is 2nd to Merckx, - leagues ahead of 3rd place).

Also surely years lost are years lost. No one would suggest not riding until 25 is a good way to become a mountain legend. Most top climbers are doing it from their early teens. Basso was riding stelvio at 12.

The people that defend porte by saying he didnt ride until 25 are essentially saying that if he had joined pro cycling at an earlier age he would be at Contador Verbier level. This alternate beginnings Porte on an Pantani epo programme. Maddone, Alpe d huez 33 minutes?

Excellent post. His power was obvious at those events. Where are the Sky apologists insisting it took years to develop field dominating raw power under Sky's special program? Just like Lemond's field dominating raw power. Oh, wait....

I hope not, though stranger things have happened. If he places on the podium who will defend the cleanliness of this Tour? Porte on the podium of a Tour de France? Clean?

I was thinking more of a courtroom victory :D

Although I forgot that if you get away with it for 10 years, 2nd place doesn't get promoted. Of course the most challenging part would be how on Earth Porte could avoid the fallout of his training partner and bestest buddy going down. I maintain that he doesn't look as insane as Froome though.

I agree, the performances of both point to doping, Porte maybe more so because at least Froome did similar last year.

Disagree. Porte showed some decent stuff earlier in his career when Froome was hanging onto motorbikes and getting dropped on the flat in south africa

So id say there is maybe a 0.1% chance Porte is clean

Porte was ok in TT but not great, as for mountains even in the 2010 Giro he wasn't that good and would lose upwards of 2 minutes a stage from stage 14 onwards. 2011 he sucked badly and was beaten on climbs by the likes of Beppu, Ciolek and Russ Downing.

So you're more certain of Porte doping IF Froome is doping, than Froome doping in the first place? You're happy to remain unconvinced that Froome is doping, yet IF Froome dopes, Porte does, simply because they are friends and training partners?

Porte was slower than the top guys in 2010. He was a minute down on Froome.

Surely their cases should be treated on an individual basis, applying exactly the same standards.

I'm ready to accept that Porte in 2011 could only be bothered in rides that would benefit just him - ITTs. That still leaves quite a gap between 2012 and 2010, and even between 2013 and 2012.

He's not even one of those "nice guy, wouldn't dope" riders. He's a classless arrogant ****.

I also remember him as a fairly useless mountains domestique for Contador in the Tour.

You're quite the detectives....

He was always a talent when he was younger and he is only 28 years old - perfect age for a cyclist. Perfectly reasonable to improve at that age.

So 5th in the National Time Trial in 2010, 2nd in the Vuelta in 2011, 2nd in the TDF last year and likely winner this year; this sort of progression in results cannot be attributable to hard work and a better training program at Sky??

Absolutely - it has been proven over the last 14 years that only one team at any time knows how to train properly. The rest just sit around drinking beers desperately waiting for someone to show them how to train.

5th in the Australian national times trial! 'Whoopdeedoo Basil, what does it all mean?'

'Well Austin it means you're trolling AGAIN.'

Chavanel has won how many national time trials now? Surely you caught that info this week from Phil and Paul? Seriously you couldn't have missed that! Gonna start praising him.

What about Lulu who isn't even here this year! Know how many Spanish titles he has won?

Oh but Porte, whose ITT palmares compared to Michael Rogers at the same age is not a joke! He's the promise of the future! Let's not forget Evans doesn't even race at nationals! Did Rogers race that year! But Richie came 5th!

With that years form this year and Evans turning up he wouldn't even come 7th anymore. That is how much chrono talent there is Down Under. Or did you not realise where the major talent is? That's right, Rohan Dennis went home today.

But feed us some more stories about Porte. You're sounding more and more like his long lost cousin from Tassie. ;)

BTW you actually meant Froome...not Porte. But when you're on a roll, a trolling roll, why bother with correct names?

I thought it was pretty clear from the list of results I posted who I was referring to.
