you say it like its a bad thing. how could a young kid hoping to be a future GC contender pass up the chance to ride in support of Contador? And only having a year to go, he doesnt have to fear being stuck in that role forever.

Watched many GT's in the past decade and a half? How many super-domestiques working for a race favourite (or contender) have had a chance to ride for themselves?

If he's stuck in that role for a year, and doesn't grab himself more serious results, his contract value could suffer immensely. Come late 2011, and he could just be another 26/27 year old with one win and a couple of minor placings, and a GT category jersey won in a freak 13-minute breakaway.

If he's a realist, he's unlikely to see himself as an aspiring GT contender (other than in happy dreams), and sees little benefit to his long-term career prospects in pacing AC up the first 5 km of every Alp.

thats a pretty long list.
leipheimer, hamilton, landis, kloden, rogers, evans, schleck, cunego, ulrich (is that in the last 15 yrs?), lemond (ok well over 15 yrs). just off the top of my head.

considering he hasnt ridden the tour, i dont see how riding in the support of contador will hurt him at all.

Contador is suspended so Richie Porte is now the only reliable leader of Saxo Bank. Riis said no to his departure, a team does need more than one leader to contend in three GT, it was a wise decision.

As anyone who has read my previous posts on this will know, i do not expect Richie Porte to be contending for GCs next year. Might get a 1 day race though.

He won't win a GT in 2011 but I will sway towards the wiser heads than yours that say he will be a contender in GT's in coming years.

I'll help.

Pegasus will win the TdF in the next three years... Pegasus ride clean... Pegasus have a roster stronger than Katusha. Plenty of caps and exclamations too!

But do pegasus have mood lighting?

Well, at this rate Porte may be Saxo's GC rider for next year, only wonder if there will be anybody to support him.

D. Navarro is very very good better then Porte. J. Hernandez is a also good. They also migth keep C.A Sörensen and N. Sörensen how both is very good.
G. Larsson is pretty good uphill. And with rigth training and slim his body he could be even better. But I think Olympic TT will be his main target next year and after that he mabye will try a wiggins.

I doubt he'll bother with the Olympics next year. The year after that, maybe.

Does anybody out there really think Richie is a GT GC contender?

I think he suits hilly courses with TT so perhaps 1 week stage races. Remember that a sprinter won the Tour of Britain!

What is it about Richie Porte that morons who are unable to create simple arguments, automatically resort to ad hominem to defend him. Second time someone has acuused me of stupidity because i gave the opinion that he wont win a gt (as have other wiser posters than yourself).

I didnt see Francois being attacked for suggesting EBH wont reach his potential, dont see any ad hominem to those who hate on Valverde, nor to those who laughed at Footon, or at those who call Andy - junior, or at Dekker for saying Frank Schleck wont win a gt. No one laughs at those who say Wiggins wont win a gt. (notice that both Wiggins and Schleck have way better gt records than Porte)

But when you say, about a guy who came 7th in 1 gt, that you dont think hes the next Contador, the righteous immediately come to taunt you.

Why do people think they know the future? You have no idea if in the future he wins a GT or even 5. The potential is there, he had a phenomenal breakout year, lets wait and see. Until he retires no one will know. :)

I guess you are rigth ;) But he will not transform too a GC rider before London 2012 since that is his big goal. But still even without Contador, GC rider for top 10 will not be a hugh problem for Saxo.

Navarro has top 10 potential in the tour allready next year.
C.A Sörensen will make top 10 in Giro or Veulta
R. Porte if he be a better climber he also can be top 10 next year in Giro or Veulta within two, three years he could be a top 5 in the tour.
G. Larsson, N. Sörensen and J. Hernandez is good support in mountains.

Exactly. When lance was 23 did anyone ever imagine he would win 7 tours. ;)

So much angst over the young man. Gee, why not just let him go about his business (fairly impressive) and let time decide how good he's going to be, there is no hurry to decide how good he's going to be.

For me the list of pluses goes something like this;

TT - impressive
Hilly classic type courses - shows potential
Mountains - needs work but maybe has potential to hold on to a pure climber
Tactics - above average

I could name other young riders with those abilities too so I'm not going to proclaim him as the next big thing quite yet, but with several teams stepping over each other to get his signature they must have some idea how good he could be.

He has potential in tts, prologues (hold mj for first week) and perhaps classics. Maybe even cobbled classics. In all of these i expect Porte to be good. Wont be surprised if he wins a monument. I just dont think hell make it as a GT rider.

With two TT's and maybe some of the stiffest mountain competition preparing for the tdf, maybe Tour de Suisse next year?

Also people are way too caught up in the GT's. If Porte could win some one week races and maybe a monument it would be awesome! But I don't know if he will be allowed to actually try that for real on SBS :(

If the parcors was like it was in 09 when Canc won, yes. But it looks like it will be a difficult course.

I think Eneco Tour could suit him. And ill throw his fans a bone: Paris Nice, even though he has not yet demonstrated the ability to win that, he is far more likely to truimph there than in GTs

I'm with Hitch. 100% true.

I think he'll struggle to live up to this years promise next year. Mainly due to the team he'll be riding for. Really hope he goes well but fear that he'll be in the wrong environment to fulfil his potential.
