Went in my first race on Saturday. Rode down to a course near a minor airport to check it out and see what the story is. When I arrived one of the traffic wardens said to hurry, that they were starting. Passed the A Graders on the way. When I arrived at the start line the B graders were leaving. No number, no registration, I just jumped in. 5 Laps of 11km course.

Quite wind exposed course. Sprinters finish. Missed the best wheel. Also cannot sprint for ****. Just persistently rode down the others' kick. Came in third. Left without saying anything. Gave ten bucks to the traffic warden on my way out.

I;m just wondering, how much do people fork out each year for their racing licence (those that do race)? I get slugged $262 (AUD) by Cycling Australia because I'm an 'elite' (because I'm between the ages of 24-35), even though if I entred in some 'elite' races I would be dropped pretty quickly.

The license here is reasonable at NOK600 for my age group, sport classs of course.

Where they get ya bit here is that you have to be a member of a club to get a license, annual membership is NOK 500ish depending on your club. And new this year is all races have to be electronically timed with Emit chips (which I actually think is very cool but...) so you got to buy one at NOK 500 or rent one for the season...

All told, my "license" cost me NOK 1600 this year...about USD 260.00

Here in Italy there are many cycling association (not only the cycling federation) and for example mine cost between 30-50euro depending on the assurance options you use.

$125 for a National licence from memory. You can take out a centre license which is cheaper or just a club license which is cheaper again if you only intend riding you local club races.

If I remember correctly it was 90 USD for my USCF license. It allows me to race road, track and mountain. To register a club is 300 USD I think.

Then we have to pay entry fees for each race to the promoter. Those vary race to race, and you can generally "add" another race to your day's activities for 8-10 USD per race.

In Southern California, we have another racing organization, CBR. If you join the insider club, 500 USD for the season, pays for unlimited racing (masters and elite categories) on the weekends and they put on two race series on Tuesdays and Thursdays too. Nice part is you have the same number all year long for every race and you don't have to mess with registration lines at all.

A few years ago, I was racing mountain bikes nearly every weekend and kept a license up. Now I'm at a transitional point in my life and only a race a few times each season (3-5 times). I let my license expire and now buy the one day license whenever I register. Once I get settled back in again, I'll get a license, but right now the fee isn't worth it if I only race a few times.

Correct, you get 3 One Day licences here. They are $18 plus another $10. I should add for my $260 I pay, that includes my club fees as well.

What exactly is a Gran Fondo? I was having a look at the link in Michele's sig, are they actually a race or just a challenge ride, but technically not a race?

My Italian is rather basic.

Then the rankings appeared and quickly became more popular and right now they are actually Open races which means that also Elite guys can take part.

Like an MS150 or your regional 4 gap century with primes and a podium?

They certainly look a blast...plus riding in Italy...pretty much sums it up there (although I've seen they're all over the globe now...)

Craig nailed it. I was just attempting a humorous analogy given that Gran Fondos have become competitive in spite of their original intent.

The same way that the MS150, a charity ride to raise money to fight Multiple Sclerosis (sp?), has become 'competitive' for some.

A century, is US parlance, is a 100 mile ride (160KM), a metic century is a 100KM (62 US miles). A lot of folks do these for the pure pleasure and community of a nice long ride. A 4-gap implies that (or pass) that the ride climbed and crossed 4 passes during the course of it. And, as always, someone will inevitably say they 'won' it...

Well, indeed some guys in Italy are complaining the fact that this kind of events lost the "true spirit" but it also true that you can still find some pure cyclotouring events where it doesnt matter how long you takes to do it.

The top teams into Granfondos has quiet a budget almost similar or higher to any elite/u23 team and probably some Continental as well.
The fact is that in Italy there arent road races like you can find in USA/UK and the main reason is cause the italian federation didnt care for a long time of hobby (amateur?) cyclists.
