I raced for Raleigh in the mid 80's, got my *** kicked for one season in Belgium, rode a season in Australia. I'm in a couple paragraphs of the new Dan Lee book 'the Belgian Hammer' (one of the failed stories of trying to make it in the big time) . First road race last sunday at west head (sydney) and got a nice bonus - Mark Renshaw turned up on his venge!
Unfortunately, the A-graders were stopped early because Cadel Evan's charity ride group came through and tied up the road, so we never got to see him open up!

As for me, with two fifth's of bugg3r all training, I stayed on the bunch for just over half the race then messed up my gear choice on one hill, so spent the rest of it chasing and not quite getting back on. Great day though!

I was at West Head as well last Sunday. I only did 60km though and it was not a race.

its such a shame that there aren't any races in the area where i live. not even mountain bike ones i would love to be humiliated from time to time just for the sake of some racing

Yesterday we had the first race of the Lebanese National Championship. It usually happens as 5 stages and the winner is the one who scores most points at the end.
The first stage was a flat 112 kms with some short uphills. I managed to do a long breakaway with one teammate and another rider, then got caught in the last 25 kms. Then at the end, I was the last man to prepare the uphill sprint for my leader, who's the reigning national champion but his chain snapped when he was on the way to win it so he finished 4th and i finished 6th despite some cramps at the end.

Next race will finish with a 15 kms climb, I should be in the podium, since climbing is rather my specialty and finished 3rd last year in that specific race.

I finished in the top 300 but that's significantly less impressive than it may at first appear, given the total number of runners. I'm not fast but I was seeded in the first group, and if you're not in one of the first two, it's nearly impossible to be competitive. It's totally insane for the first mile. Then the road tilts up and the herd quickly thins out. I actually finished right alongside Amby Burfoot one year. Although he's got quite a few years on me, and obviously just running it for fun, it was still cool just to see him as we crossed the finish line.

Good article. I think that same story is posted on the race website. Hard to imagine that only back as far as 1961, some held those crazy beliefs!

Even in the Olympics, women were not allowed to run more than a half-mile lest, it was believed, they would risk their femininity and reproductive health. The most alarmist officials warned that a woman who ran a more ambitious distance might cause her uterus to fall out.

Cool looking course! What/where is the "underground trail"? 8th place sounds pretty damn good!

...and Granville...finishing in the top 300 of 14k runners is pretty d*** good.

I have run one race that large and didn't like it.
I'm much happier on dirt roads and trails.

Should have clarified, underground meaning invitation only, a small event with about 40 runners. The trail we ran was Barrett-Stoddard up Mt. Baldy.

that is my rain/cobblestone/thrasher bike that I brought with me to Amsterdam last spring. (and sure enough, my dropout broke by the end of the season) I am old, slow, and un-memorable so I don't have a quiver of free Ritte's at my disposal. (shipping one out for next spring)

Thx. I'm among the best in my country, top 5 most of the time. The problem is that it's not a professional discipline yet, so I do that in parrallel with a full-time job but there is a chance I would become semi-pro as of next season.
