Biathlon - one of those wierd sports that I love to watch, absolutely love it. We never see it other than at the Olympics.
...seems that Biathlon is the MOST popular winter sport on Russian TV, by far. The race this morning was fabulous.

Here in the US we rarely get to see it either, and I too love it. Both the Biathlon and XC skiing in general, at least when the races are close, and nearly all of them are. The sport is exciting, beautiful to watch, and captivating in the level of fitness and skill the athletes have. I'm both surprised and disappointed we don't get to see more of it each winter. It almost makes me want to spend a winter in Russia.

And another two medals for the Netherlands. These medals on the shorter distances are nicer, because we actually have some competition here. Anyway, very good time by Groothuis, though in the end he only by a very small margin.

Who cares, even if the margin was 0.000001

Gold it is! Man these gold medals on the short distances are especially fantastic. Can't remember Dutch skaters ever winning there much. Sometimes a silver medal and ofcourse Postma and Vd Velde... but now the sweep on 500m and gold and bronze on 1000m... Amazing!

Groothuis' win is the nicest one so far, for me. That guy has seriously been through a lot, from tearing his own achilles tendon with his skate to serious depression, with all kinds of injuries and viruses in between.

Looks like Germany only bothers with the more precious metal. Medal count:

1 Germany 6 1 0 7
2 Canada 4 4 2 10
3 Norway 4 3 5 12
4 Netherlands 4 2 4 10

Biathlon is totally the highlight of my winter aswell. A shame you don't have access to Eurosports channels in the US. They transmit every single IBU World Cup race in the winter period. National danish public service channels have even started transmitting biathlon once in a while, although there's no actual danish connection to the sport. Pretty sure you could stream some of the races though on sportlemon.tv.

This.

I would have been happy to see Shani on the podium, but it wasn't to be. Anyone who follows skating, or who is Dutch, knows how much Groothuis deserved this win!

The IBU streams all races direct from its website free, but it's without commentary. On the plus side, you can rewatch any event from the last three seasons in full.

"Without commentary" belongs on the plus side as well.

Depends on the commentary team. But a bit like the cycling, you do get some very biased and/or odd commentary. I always find Fritzenwenger quite amusing though.

In this thing of ours, I really like the guys who just love the sport, ride for the fans, later for all that other bull****.

In Speed skating, Shani Davis is 100% that guy. **** the late night talk shows, look how happy he is just being with the fans post olympics a few years back.

Just finished watching coverage of the woman's downhill. Talk about a great race (and great result)!

Watching Maze's run part of me wanted her to win and part wanted Gisin to hold on. So a perfect result. :)

Skating, short track now on. 5000m semis, mens relay.

Dynamic stuff.
Dynamic, but also a bit of a joke. Holland reach the finals because the two leading nations crash into each other, a Chinese girl wins the 500 m final because the three leading riders do the same.

sure, but thats why I like it. Dynamic, sometimes "fair" other times ridiculous. I'm not a fan of perfect sports. The crashes add to the spectacle and luckily they are mostly harmless here.

Indeed. Also because shorttrack provides Chinese women who suddenly turn out to be good sprinters on the long track :p
