So I've been out for a while mainly due to trouble logging into here.

OK, transfer news, I just saw that Sebastian Henao has been confirmed for Sky next year as I'm sure we all knew already.

Juan Pablo Suarez of Team Colombia will be returning to EPM-UNE next year.

At the Vuelta a Ecuador, Movistar is going pretty strong with several stage wins, and Freddy Montaña leads the race.

like every year. the bolivians get destroyed by colombians and especially argentineans and chileans in the flat stages that come first.

Vila Vila to El Alto

It looks like stage 8 from Vila-Vila to El Alto goes through Unduavi and presumably uses Road 41 between La Cumbre pass (at 4653 meters according to the road marker) and El Alto.

I am curious about that road which I discovered recently just looking at google map.

I don't have a profile but it seems to hover for a long distance around 4500-4700 meters with ups and downs.

Anybody here has cycled on that road? Was it used on previous years?

El Volcán is 12:29 down. Last year he won three of the high altitude stages, but could be too much already.

Until today all stages were run flat and low lands (200-500m over sea level). Today is the first stage with intermediate altitude because they get to Cochabamba area.
If I am to believe the elevation in the road book, todays stage is mostly downhill, but with a murito 10Km from the finish. 600m at 16.7%

I'm not sure how Argentinians, who are in command will face the altitude. Colombians should be fine at this point

Based on the official webpage, the highest point is called La Cumbre, at 4496. It will be climbed tomorrow (stage6 Bombeo-Oruro) at Km 60. It's route 4, search for Lakolakoni.
It doesn't seem steep but at that high altitude anything feels like Mortirolo.

Stage 7 finishes in El Alto and it looks flat. (3774 to 4111m at the finish line)

Thanks,
About 4500 m seems right for the highest point on that road.

However on stage 8 there is no way you can go from Vila vila (via Unduavi) to El Alto without going through another pass also named "La Cumbre" which culminates at 4653 meters ( I have a poster of that road in front of my eyes, pix I took in 2001).

I guess the map shown on this thread must be wrong and the race does not go through Unduavi, but stays on the altiplano on the main road from Oruro to La Paz.

The better known "La Cumbre" is the one outside of La Paz going to Yungas (Unduavi, Coroico, Chulumani, Caranavi). The top is at 4653 meters.
Since La Cumbre means The TOP, there are bound to be many La Cumbre in Latin America.

The one "La Cumbre" that you mention is on the road from Cochabamba ( about 2700m) to Oruro (3900 meters more or less). That road was largely unpaved before Evo Morales came to power.

Le Breton:
As per the official website the image posted in this thread is wrong. They use a different road mostly flat.

As per Google imagery on 2013, Road 41 seems to be unpaved and it flirts with 4800m over sea level, but I see route 3, near Laguna Estrellani, reaching the altitude you stated before.

Coming back to the race results: Yesterday's stage was won by Rodrigo Contreras (COL) and reduced his difference by 40 secs. The leader seemed to be the only Argentinian to hang in the bunch, so he kept/increased distances to other rivals.

Salvador Moreno is the new leader of the race. Volcán is still eight minutes down. So it looks quite good for Moreno, but you never know.

I wouldn't be so sure. soliz has had far worse odds in past vuelta's in which he came back more than 20 minutes in a few stages(2009). also the itt alone will make soliz take at least 5-6 minutes on moreno and everbody else. soliz high altitude timetrialing is something beyond anything. indurain and martin could dream of gaps like these:

1 25 BOL19850109 SOLIZ, Oscar EBS á 00:55:38

yes. raul mesa forced him to race mundo mayay because he is leaving the team he's an ***hole. I hope beltran rests well because he can really put european climbing under fire. see giro bio 2010. he has only improved since then as shows him winning an itt.

Why did it take so long for him to finally come to Europe? His own choice, or pressure from the team to stay in Colombia? Because in the Giro bio back then, he was way better than someone like Winner Anacona.
