I never really thought of Russia as being part of Eastern Europe. Sure, it starts at the East end of Europe, but most of it is in Asia, and it's so huge that putting it in a category with all it's former satellite states seems weird.

St Petersburg (not the one in Florida) has a European feel to it, IMHO

The part of Russia that matters is in Europe, the fact that they own a big slice of tundra in Asia is IMO equivalent to that fact that Denmark owns a big block of Ice in the Atlantic. It doesn't change either nations essential Europeness.

Yes, but it has a European style of clothing, culture... unlike the Central Asian countries.
I dunno.
The Balkans, on the other hand is such a weird mix of Mediterranean (mostly Venetian), Central European (Habsburg), Turkish (Ottoman), and Slavic influences. You can visit any of the major cities in the region and one moment you feel you're anywhere in Western Europe, and the very next as if you're smack in the middle of Turkey.
Beautiful countryside though. Made for cycling. If only the drivers around here were a bit more tolerant...

They are only an hour or so behind the race schedule. I'd forgotten what these transition stages across Southern France were like.
That descent must have made a few riders pucker.
Moreau? double points? I know not.

Oooh Aerts is off!

The team classification. That was also why The Shack put Popo on his wheel as well.

I was going for humor there....

Yes I recognize that. I am just concerned that too many smart people are factoring in utter destruction of AS in the itt. I think AC needs a bit of a cushion there just in case a crash/incident. there are too many what if scenarios to just assume AS tanks the TT or AC will be like Annecy last year.

I think that has a lot to do with the trade routes from Scandanavia through Russia down into the Black Sea a thousand years ago...much spreading of culture both north and south and a little east and west eh?

Crap if RS get a stage, they'll spin it as if it was the objective of the whole tour all along.

Peter the Great was inspired to build 'his own' capital city after he visited Amsterdam. He tried as hard as possible to replicate St. Petersburg after Amsterdam.
