The Balkans, on the other hand is such a weird mix of Mediterranean (mostly Venetian), Central European (Habsburg), Turkish (Ottoman), and Slavic influences. You can visit any of the major cities in the region and one moment you feel you're anywhere in Western Europe, and the very next as if you're smack in the middle of Turkey.
Beautiful countryside though. Made for cycling. If only the drivers around here were a bit more tolerant...
