Nope. Holland are the two coastal provinces (North and South-Holland) whereas The Netherlands refers to the entire country. Although most people, even in The Netherlands, refer to the country as Holland. And "Nederland" is the Dutch translation of "Netherlands".

I think the deal is that folk over here will stop calling the Netherlands "Holland" if you lot stop calling the UK "England". And if you guys drop the "Hup, Holland, Hup" shenanigans too then.

I have long vowed to get too annoyed with some of the Scots here who think that the Dutch come from Denmark, and/or that the Netherlands is part of Scandinavia. Life is just too short.

Not sure if that other bit of trivia got answered, and since this entire thread is now officially off topic, and better for it:

Holland is derived from medieval "Holtland" (wooded land). Not from "hollow land". "Nether"lands on the other hand does refer to a low lying bit.

The reason why there are places called "Holland" in the UK has a lot to do with the Dutch labourers who came over and created dry land where there was none previously, just like they started to do with great success on their own shores.

The reason why there are "Holland"s in other parts of the world is because there was an age when we kicked just about anyone's ****, and/or settled well beyond our shores. Now the kicking is mainly reserved for world cup tournaments, and (still) the Spanish. Why break the habit of a lifetime.

Unrelated, but suggested reading for the next unofficial or official rest day: a list of English words of (probable) Dutch origin. You will be quized on it before we reach Paris.

These kind of stages make me hate phil and paul (especially phil, seriously you have no idea....) that much more...

We really need a thread debating who is worse, Phil or Paul. (I am at work right now so no idea about this particular stage brilliance is all about.)

I really think Paul is MUCH worse than Phil.

And don't get me started about Roll. When Roll is not commentating and chamois sniffing, he is actually hilariously funny. He needs to keep his comments limited to anything but Lance, Shack, American riders or the actual race. If he could do that, I would enjoy his stories (orally, if you have read or at least attempted to read Bobke II, then you know he should only be allowed to use writing implements that have paper wrappers and come in bright yellow and green boxes. We used to get 8 new ones on the 1st day of school each year.)

Yes I recognize that. I am just concerned that too many smart people are factoring in utter destruction of AS in the itt. I think AC needs a bit of a cushion there just in case a crash/incident. there are too many what if scenarios to just assume AS tanks the TT or AC will be like Annecy last year.

I don't think he is taking anything for granted or leaving anything to chance. I expect him to attack on Stage 14 (Ax-3).

OMG, I nipped out to the dentist and assumed the stage was long over, so I was catching up with this thread to see who had won, saving myself having to sit through the "high"lights.

They are still at it!

I figured this would have been over like an hour ago. Are they soft pedaling today?

are all the sprinters left in the peloton? and how many points will be left for them if they are? I think there are 6t guys ahead of the peloton.. could be a good battle for the green jersey.

Could not be pedalling any softer. Rolling rest day for the peloton.
