Angliru time was great - 2nd fastest in history and the fastest for the steep section. It's not necessarily surprising that Roglic & Vingo climbed fast but it's that Landa and Kuss clocked great times as well. Another confirmation of top-fuel peleton in recent years?

So despite the first part being paced by Tiberi slower than in 2000, 2008, 2013 & 2020, this year's ascent totally dominates the ranking. It's not just a single rider going fast, it truly is the state of the peloton:

All in all, 2000 (pre EPO-test) Kelme-Heras delivered a greater performance than Rogla yesterday, and the whole Kelme team was flying, but the depth is very different. 2nd and 3rd in 2000 were as fast as Almeida (6th), and 4th back in 2000 was slower than Ayuso and Mas (10th).

So while we haven't quite reached the absolute peaks of the best performances of the EPO-turbojets, I think we can safely say that the level of the 10th best and lower is now higher than back then.

I think the Angliru time, while still brilliant suffers a bit from not being ridden pre-festina. I'd love to see a big mountain-tt after a week 2 rest day in the tour in good conditions to see how properly outrageous it can get.

Rewatching the 2000 Angliru it's kind of hilarious how Rubiera and particularly Escartin destroyed the group before the steepest part even started.

Probably the only time that the GC group got completely destroyed on the Viapara already.

Maybe even RoboHeras of 2000 paid slightly for the effort on the steep part as I think that was the only time that Angliru was done 100% top to bottom (IMO),
