Merckx season was objectively better (so far). I'd give him a better than 60% chance of winning 2 out of 3 of OGRR, WCRR and Lombardy.

This is a very good rundown of what happened and perceptions from camps. I would add to it the psychological warfare before the tour even began. The visma narrative that Vingo is simply fortunate to begin the race (he was). Truth is they not only thought me might win in spite of all evidence of pog’s improvement from last year, but they knew Vingo would win, even with a much weaker visma team. Broe, who’s on the visma payroll, came out on like stage three and announced Vingo would win. Didn’t say he thought Vingo could win. Said he would win. The element of surprise was apparent. Gerajnt thomas found the hidden form and echoed Vingo would win. He just friggen raced against pogi in the giro! And pogi was put on the ropes after minimal time losses in the first half of the tour and Vingo’s constant presence on pogis wheel before and after Vingo’s win on stage 11.

So much arrogance to fail to predict 7W/ kg happening out of nowhere.

A season for ages. After he dominated some early-season classics (Strade and Liege) we witnessed the biggest demonstration of power in stage races in modern cycling: Giro-Tour double won in absurd style (6 stages in each of them with gaps of 10+ and 6+ minutes). Absolutely incredible. So far this year, he was beaten only in one race and only by two sprinters.

You saw the last two years how fragile things can be even with small mishaps in the race or during preparation. So a unbroken and continueing dominance of Tadeij is not set in stone. We had the same conversations last year with Vingo. This thread here was already coping hard with Tadeij never winning a Tour again. And now look at this year. Next year cards will be dealt all new and maybe we have Remco in the mix even more.
