Teams & Riders Tadej Pogačar discussion thread

The reality is that the duo will never start the TdF without some excuse-relating preparational things, one of them will always have the edge. If anyway a miracle happen and both arrive fully fit and ready, there may be some dark swans as in 2014 or 2006, God forbid. Life is too complicated and unpredictable.

The way the 2024 TdF unfolded makes me look at the previous editions at a bit different perspective. The stages where Vinegaard secured his wins - Granon and Courchevel - stand out from logic of their battles. On Granon Pogačar simply bonked, now I'm inclined to believe it. Otherwise 5-7 other riders wouldnt have beat him on that day. Courchevel is harder to judge, but most likely Pogačar was missing racing base. Anyway only top or near-top form is what he vitally needs to outclimb Vinegaard.

Crazy, successful year for Pogacar. Dominated every race he entered bar MSR and that could have been a win as well if MVDP wasn’t there. Detractors said after each domination it wouldn’t happen again at the next race but he provided them and everyone else wrong since no one excepted this level. Not only came back to win the Tour but did so in dominate fashion on the back of dominating the Giro. People said it wouldn’t be easy, but turns out it is if you’re Tadej Pogacar.

You would take away from his achievement by saying it was easy. I think it was hard work, aided by change of trainer. And I think getting spanked by Vingegaard two years in a row added additional fire.

As everyone else has said... It's the two GTs and the WC. The reason being that until relatively recently the Giro and vuelta used to overlap so couldn't both be done in the same year.

They didn't quite overlap (somehow, Battaglin in 81 and of course Merckx in 73) managed to win both. But there were only three or four days between them.

Maertens also continued his rampage in '77 and won 7 stages in the first week of the Giro after having won 13 stages and overall in the Vuelta until he sadly crashed out.

Finally coming out of Rogla's shadow!
He will always be in R. shadow in Slovenia. Younger Instagram generation of quick wins and hero cartoonish performances likes Pog more but they will turn their back on him quickly when wins and records won't be there any more. Many are already now waiting for some kind of doping proof anyway.

Rog. will remain people champion forever. He started the craze in the country and 2020 will never be forgotten.

Just phenomenal. Just winning the Giro-Tour double is an enormous achievement but normally you would expect the double attempter to be fading but hang on. Instead Pogacar was by far the freshest rider in the final hard trio of stages winning all without looking like he had to empty the tank on any of the efforts.

A combined 16 minute margin to 2nd across both grand tours and 6 stages in each is insane and harks back to Coppi Bartali esque dominance.

This is already the best single non Merckx season and he still has a worlds parcours he is heavy favourite on plus Lombardia where he 3 from 3 and Olympics where he could very plausibly win.
